The relationship between recognition and cued recall in memory of enacted and nonenacted information

Summary An experiment was conducted to determine whether the processes underlying memory for enacted and nonenacted events are the same or different. The experimental paradigm used was that of recognition failure of recallable information. At study subjects were given verbal commands (e.g., break the match, roll the ball), that they were to remember or enact and remember. At test subjects were first asked to recognize the noun in each command in the absence of the verb and then to recall the noun with the verb present as cue. Half the subjects were given the two tests in the reverse order. The results demonstrate that enactment and nonenactment differ with respect to the degree of dependence/independence between recognition and recall. In the enactment condition recognition and cued recall are completely independent and in the nonenactment condition they are almost completely dependent.

Psychol ., 1972, 13 , 136–140.—The scotopic contrast hue was determined as a function of duration of pre-stimulation, together with the additive opponent hue. It is concluded that the red/blue ratio which has to be added to the additive opponent hue to produce the scotopic contrast hue, may change as a function of both wavelength and duration of pre-stimulation.

Psychol ., 1969, 10 , 140–144—The relation between the specific threshold level and the upper limit of the scotopic contrast color was investigated. The achromatic interval between the scotopic and the photopic component increased when time in darkness increased, and when pre-stimulation was reduced as regards intensity, duration, or cone/rod ratio. The results are interpreted on the basis of the opponent theory of color vision.     

RODS AS COLOR RECEPTORS IN SCOTOPIC VISION

With the method of successive contrast, all the principal colors have been observed when test-stimulating at levels of intensity within the photochromatic interval. Using the method of simultaneous contrast, blue and green colors have been observed within this area of intensity. It is concluded that rod activity must somehow initiate these color processes.     

On the logic of adverbs

In the paper I investigate aspects of adverbial modification as an operation applying an adverb or adverbial phrase to a predicate and thereby creating a new predicate. The logic of adverbial modification, on this view, belongs to the logic of predicate modifiers. The theory I present is intended to cover not only adverbial modification but also attributive modification, but problems concerning the latter will not be given any special attention.
