Paranoid character and the intolerance of indifference.

This paper suggests that aspects of paranoid character are structured around fantasies of magical and concrete connectedness to objects; these fantasies serve to avoid the terrors of object inconstancy. The authors describe how these fantasies are expressed in the psychoanalytic situation and explore their relation to common paranoid phenomena. The paranoid person must maintain these fantasies of connectedness at all cost or risk experiencing unbearable indifference between self and object. Paradoxically, the sacrifice of self and object boundaries inherent in these fantasies makes object constancy even more difficult to achieve because of the secondary defensive use of anger mobilized to protect the boundaries of the self.     

Psychometric properties of Loevinger's Sentence Completion Test in an adult psychiatric outpatient sample

Little research has been conducted on Loevinger's Washington University Sentence Completion Test of Ego Development in adult psychiatric outpatients. The measure is a promising method of assessing a construct of personality and character functioning that should be useful in research on psychopathology and in choosing treatment modalities. The data presented in this study address the question of the psychometric adequacy of the measure in this segment of the subject population. Specifically, estimates of interrater reliability, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability are presented for a sample of 42 adult outpatients. In addition, the relationship between total protocol ratings and item sum scores is explored.     

“John thinks that Mary thinks that…” attribution of second-order beliefs by 5- to 10-year-old children

Understanding of second-order belief structures by 5- and 10-year-old children was assessed in acted stories in which two characters (John and Mary) were independently informed about an object's (ice-cream van's) unexpected transfer to a new location. Hence both John and Mary knew where the van was but there was a mistake in John's second-order belief about Mary's belief: “John thinks Mary thinks the van is still at the old place”. Children's understanding of this second-order belief was tested by asking “Where does John think Mary will go for ice cream?” Correct answers could only be given if John's second-order belief was represented, since all shortcut reasoning based on first-order beliefs would have led to the wrong answer. Results suggested unexpected early competence around the age of 6 and 7 years, shown under optimal conditions when inference of second-order beliefs was prompted.     

Symptomatology of adopted and nonadopted adolescents in a psychiatric hospital

This study compared the symptomatology and diagnoses of adopted and nonadopted adolescents in a psychiatric hospital. Data were gathered from the hospital charts of adolescents who already had been discharged from the hospital. Contrary to expectations, adoptees were no more likely than nonadoptees to have received personality disorder diagnoses, nor were they more likely to be hospitalized as the result of antisocial behavior. However, in comparison with nonadopted adolescents, the adopted adolescents were younger upon admission to the hospital, significantly less often diagnosed psychotic, and significantly more often diagnosed adjustment reaction. It was suggested that adopted adolescents may be less likely than nonadopted adolescents to require severe or prolonged pathology in order to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital. It was also suggested that the antisocial symptomatology so frequently observed in adopted children in mental health settings does not account for the hospitalizations of those receiving inpatient treatment.
