Influences of Acculturation on Mexican-American Drinking Practices: Implications for Counseling

Literature on the drinking practices of Mexican Americans is discussed from the perspectives of three acculturation models: linear acculturation, acculturative stress, and marginality stress. Culturally competent alcohol counseling practices are proposed.     

Internal and External Ethnic Identity and Their Correlates: A Study of Chinese American Immigrants

The measurement of internal ethnic identity and external ethnic identity showed that Chinese American immigrants could be differentiated into different identity groups. Additionally, internal ethnic identity significantly predicted salience of ethnicity and loss of face. Income, ethnicity salience, external ethnic identity, and loss of face were significant predictors of acculturative stress.     

South Asian and East Asian International Students' Perceived Prejudice,Acculturation, and Frequency of Help Resource Utilization

Relationships of perceived prejudice and acculturation with frequency of help resource utilization were examined for South Asian and East Asian international students (N = 110). All predictors, including interactions, were significant but showed different relationships for the 2 groups. The mean frequency of help resource utilization was significantly higher for South Asians. Las relaciones del prejuicio y la aculturación percibidas con la frecuencia de la utilización del recurso de ayuda se examinaron para el Sur Asiático y el Este estudiantes internacionales asiáticos (N = 110). Los pronosticadores, incluyendo interacciones, eran significativas pero mostro diferentes relaciones para los 2 grupos. La frecuencia media de la utilización del recurso de ayuda fue apreciablemente más alta para Asiáticos del Sur.     

Evidence‐Based Practice and Its Implications for Culturally Sensitive Treatment

The author discusses the adherence of culturally sensitive treatment (CST) to evidence‐based practice. CST is distinguished from empirically supported treatment. Therapists are advancing CST by designing and evaluating interventions and evolving their understanding of what makes CST work. La autora discute la adherencia del tratamiento culturalmente sensible (CST, por sus siglas en inglés) a la práctica basada en evidencias. El CST se distingue del tratamiento empíricamente sostenido. Los terapeutas están desarrollando el CST diseñando y evaluando intervenciones y evolucionando en su comprensión de los factores que hacen del CST un tratamiento eficaz.     

Eating Disorders of White American,Racial and Ethnic Minority American,and International Women

Eating attitudes and behaviors related to anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and obesity of White American, African-American, Native American, and some international women are considered from the point of view of cultural influences such as sex role, the media, socioeconomic class, and acculturation to Western society.     

Development of Counseling Trainees' Multicultural Awareness Through Mentoring English as a Second Language Students

This study reports the development of trainee multicultural awareness through a content analysis of reflections on mentoring English as a second language students. Identified themes show relationships with the Multicultural Counseling Inventory (G. R. Sodowsky, 1996) and White Racial Identity Attitudes Scale (J. E. Helms, 1990). Results suggest that guided experiential components of multicultural training can be effective. Este estudio informa el desarrollo de conocimiento multicultural por reflejos de aprendizes quién son mentores de estudiante de segunda lengua por un análisis del contenido. Los temas identificados muestran las relaciones con el Multicultural Counseling Inventory (G. R. Sodowsky, 1996) y el White Racial Identity Scale (J. E. Helms, 1996). Los resultados surguiren que los componentes de experiencia de los aprendizes multiculturales pueden ser efectivos.
