Subjects adjusted a local gauge figure such as to perceptually "fit" the apparent surfaces of objects depicted in photographs. We obtained a few hundred data points per session, covering the picture according to a uniform lattice. Settings were repeated 3 times for each of 3 subjects. Almost all of the variability resided in the slant; the relative spread in the slant was about 25% (Weber fraction). The tilt was reproduced with a typical spread of about 10 degrees. The rank correlation of the slant settings of different observers was high, thus the slant settings of different subjects were monotonically related. The variability could be predicted from the scatter in repeated settings by the individual observers. Although repeated settings by a single observer agreed within 5%, observers did not agree on the value of the slant, even on the average. Scaling factors of a doubling in the depth dimension were encountered between different subjects. The data conformed quite well to some hypothetical fiducial global surface, the orientation of which was "probed" by the subject's local settings. The variability was completely accounted for by single-observer scatter. These conclusions are based upon an analysis of the internal structure of the local settings. We did not address the problem of veridicality, that is, conformity to some "real object."  相似文献

Utrecht Biophysics Research Institute, Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht, Utrecht, The Netherlands Subjects were asked to match the speeds of two moving random-dot patterns seen through circular apertures. The speed of one pattern that moved horizontally toward the right of a computer screen changed continuously. The speed of this pattern represented the target. It was to be matched with the speed of the second pattern, which moved in the opposite direction. The subject controlled the speed of the second pattern by means of an isometric joystick. The distance between the apertures on the screen as well as the subject’s distance from the screen served as experimental parameters. In this way, the effects of both spatialand temporal transients of pattern speed on human tracking performance were studied. To avoid anticipation by the subject, the amplitude and the frequency of the target pattern speed changed pseudorandomly. The accuracy with which the subject performed the matching task was influenced by the mean pattern speed and the parameters of the visual field. Within lower velocity ranges, the subject’s sensitivity to the instantaneous speed differences varied according to Weber’s law. The cross-correlation of the velocity time courses decreased when the mean speed of the target pattern was increased. Two stimulus parameters had a strong influence on the modulation of the correlation value: (1) the angular size of the stimulus on the retina and (2) the retinal eccentricity of the stimulus.  相似文献

We used quadratic shapes in several psychophysical shape-from-stereo tasks. The shapes were elegantly represented in a 2-D parameter space by the scale-independentshape index and the scale-dependentcurvedness. Using random-dot stereograms to depict the surfaces, we found that the shape of hyperbolic surfaces is slightly more difficult to recognize than the shape of elliptic surfaces. We found that curvedness (and indirectly, scale) has little or no influence on shape recognition.  相似文献

This paper describes the results of a pointing task close to the observer. Unlike most research reported in literature, the stimuli were composed of real solid objects in an unambiguous context, free of any cue conflict. Moreover, the stimuli were either within arm-reach or just beyond arm-reach, thus having strong binocular depth cues. Surprisingly, systematic errors up to four times the standard deviation were found. These errors depended mainly on the variations in context and hardly on egocentric distance. In good first approximation, the results were scale invariant. These results are in direct conflict with classic theories about visual space. The stimuli were unambiguous real 3-D equivalents of the computer-generated stimuli we used in a previous experiment. A comparison of the results did not reveal a clear effect of a depth cue conflict between accommodation and disparity.  相似文献

We examined the influence of context on exocentric pointing. In a virtual three-dimensional set-up, we asked our subjects to aim a pointer toward a target in two conditions. The target and the pointer were visible alone, or they were visible with planes through each of them. The planes consisted of a regular grid of horizontal and vertical lines. The presence of the planes had a significant influence on the indicated direction. These changes in indicated direction depended systematically on the orientation of the planes relative to the subject and on the angle between the planes. When the orientation of the (perpendicular) planes varied from asymmetrical to symmetrical to the frontoparallel plane, the indicated direction varied over a range of 15 degrees--from a slightly larger slant to a smaller slant--as compared with the condition without the contextual planes. When the dihedral angle between the two planes varied from 90 degrees to 40 degrees, the indicated direction varied over a range of less than 5 degrees: A smaller angle led to a slightly larger slant. The standard deviations in the indicated directions (about 3 degrees) did not change systematically. The additional structure provided by the planes did not lead to more consistent pointing. The systematic changes in the indicated direction contradict all theories that assume that the perceived distance between any two given points is independent of whatever else is present in the visual field--that is, they contradict all theories of visual space that assume that its geometry is independent of its contents (e.g., Gilinsky, 1951; Luneburg, 1947; Wagner, 1985).  相似文献

Two studies found positive relationships between the ability to manage emotions and the quality of social interactions, supporting the predictive and incremental validity of an ability measure of emotional intelligence, the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT). In a sample of 118 American college students (Study 1), higher scores on the managing emotions subscale of the MSCEIT were positively related to the quality of interactions with friends, evaluated separately by participants and two friends. In a diary study of social interaction with 103 German college students (Study 2), managing emotions scores were positively related to the perceived quality of interactions with opposite sex individuals. Scores on this subscale were also positively related to perceived success in impression management in social interactions with individuals of the opposite sex. In both studies, the main findings remained statistically significant after controlling for Big Five personality traits.  相似文献

Research on the relationship between work group diversity and performance has yielded inconsistent results. To address this problem, the authors propose the categorization-elaboration model (CEM), which reconceptualizes and integrates information/decision making and social categorization perspectives on work-group diversity and performance. The CEM incorporates mediator and moderator variables that typically have been ignored in diversity research and incorporates the view that information/decision making and social categorization processes interact such that intergroup biases flowing from social categorization disrupt the elaboration (in-depth processing) of task-relevant information and perspectives. In addition, the authors propose that attempts to link the positive and negative effects of diversity to specific types of diversity should be abandoned in favor of the assumption that all dimensions of diversity may have positive as well as negative effects. The ways in which these propositions may set the agenda for future research in diversity are discussed.  相似文献

The influence of egocentric and allocentric reference frames on performance in haptic spatial tasks, was tested in three conditions. Blindfolded subjects had to make two bars haptically parallel, perpendicular or mirrored in the midsagittal plane. The hypothesis is that the contributions of egocentric and allocentric reference frames are combined, resulting in settings that lie in between the allo-representation and the ego-representation. This leads to different predictions for the outcome of different conditions. All findings were consistent with the hypothesis. In addition, for subjects with large deviations a reversal of the oblique effect was found once again, which provides extra support for the hypothesis.  相似文献

We examined in three experiments whether the perception of surface reflectance in 3-D geometrical shapes is influenced by the mode of lighting, the level of surface reflectance, the number of polyhedral faces, and the regularity of polyhedral shape. As stimuli, we used simulations of regular polyhedra in a 2AFC constant-stimuli procedure to measure how large variations in the reflectance needed to be for observers to be able to tell whether the whole surfaces were uniform or non-uniform. In almost all the cases observers were more successful in discriminating non-uniform polyhedra in the hemispherical diffuse lighting conditions than in the collimated lighting conditions. The different levels of reflectance had no effect on the discrimination of non-uniformity. Second, as the number of faces of the shape increased, discrimination thresholds became lower, indicating that the interpretation of reflectance variations was better when a shape had many faces. Finally, the regularity of the shape, such as the central symmetry, was not an important factor. These results suggest that the interpretation of surface reflectance is more precise when surfaces have less variance in relative strengths between the face luminance values; these surfaces were the ones obtained under hemispherical diffuse lighting.  相似文献
