Service planners and providers of mental health services (including therapy and counselling) claim that their services are being restructured so as to become more sensitive to the needs of users—irrespective of race and cultural background. This paper is one step towards that goal. It aims to (i)challenge assumptions and beliefs held by mainly white, mainstream therapists and counsellors; (ii) question the therapeutic practice which is based on white, middle-class ideology; (iii) raise awareness of a ‘black’ perspective in therapy and counselling and (iv) provide some practical guidelines for transcultural counselling.  相似文献

In Britain today, counsellors and therapists often work with people from a diverse range of ethnic groups whose cultures are substantially different from their own. There is increasing concern that people from black and ethnic communities have limited access to appropriate services—despite service planners' and providers' statements that mental health services are being restructured to become more sensitive, relevant and meaningful to these communities. This paper is an attempt to redress the balance with an emphasis on the therapeutic needs of South Asian communities. It aims to challenge assumptions and beliefs held by therapists and counsellors, question therapeutic practice based within a white, middle-class ideology, raise awareness of an 'Asian' perspective in therapy, and provide some guidelines for good practice in transcultural counselling.  相似文献

The Hong Kong Government and the education sector encourage the whole population-from toddlers to senior citizens-to utilize information technology, and many do. Yet there are no studies exploring the patterns of adolescents using ICQ (I seek you) in Asian countries. This study was done in Hong Kong, which has the greatest number of ICQ users. A quantitative approach was adopted by administering self-constructed questionnaires to the students of one high school. One hundred and forty-seven adolescents volunteered to participate. The key findings of the study are (1) most of the adolescents have been using ICQ for 1-4 years; (2) most fit one of two patterns of use: either 2 or 3 days per week, or more than 5 days per week; (3) they spend less than 3 h per day on ICQ; (4) the main reasons for using ICQ are entertainment, relaxation, and socializing; and (5) parents are concerned about possible negative impacts on their children's academic performance because of using ICQ. Two main implications are drawn: proper use of ICQ can minimize parental distress and encourage adolescents to be less sedentary.  相似文献

A patient who was developing her career as a writer evolved a unique process of reading her fiction aloud during analytic sessions. This paper explores this unconventional approach and the inevitable illusions, fantasies, meaningful explanations, and creative fictions that form a part of every technical/theoretical choice. How do analysts reach an integrated, rather than a theory-led, sense of conviction about a theoretical/technical choice? The development of integrated conviction is illustrated by showing the accumulation of ordinary, everyday emotional responses that are gradually integrated with theory, over time, until the analyst achieves an inner feeling of fit.  相似文献

Within the field of counselling and psychotherapy research, qualitative methods have been a longstanding tradition of inquiry due to the mutual interest of therapists and researchers in both internal experiences and intersubjective processes. Methodological integrity is a conceptual framework that has been advanced to increase the rigor of these methods. In this paper, we consider the value of this concept for counselling and psychotherapy researchers and reviewers. This framework guides investigators and reviewers to consider how procedures can be adapted to meet the goals of specific studies, given their characteristics and approach to inquiry. In this brief article, we exemplify the relevance and application of this concept to this field by describing the decision‐making process within the designing of a qualitative research project to investigate clients' needs within rape crisis counselling. Through this exemplar, we also provide guidance to counselling and psychotherapy researchers on considerations during the process of research review and reporting.  相似文献

It is common for analysts to struggle with substantial periods of impasse, and with the associated subjective feelings of shame and failure, while analyzing patients who rely heavily on narcissistic defenses. Facing the feelings that accompany periods of impasse, while at the same time pushing oneself to take necessary creative risks, is a huge and painful task for the analyst if it is deeply confronted. These patients engage in false uses of the analytic process in which the pursuit of understanding is systematically undermined. In response, the analyst is susceptible to being drawn in to processes of mutual seduction, false conviction, and impasse. Through the analyst's partial living out of the patient's projective identifications (and eventually observing the patient's living out of the analyst's projective identifications), the analyst is able to gain a depth of understanding of the patient, of him- or herself, and of the interaction that might not otherwise be possible. Because analysts tend to employ theory defensively, it is essential that they attend, through self-analysis and consultation, to the ways in which they use it. Two cases are presented in which prolonged impasses were eventually understood and resolved.  相似文献
