Arguing that little is known about the ways in which mothers and fathers in intact households divide labor and influence children, a multifaceted questionnaire was devised to explore college students' perceptions of their parents. Mothers had greater responsibility for nurturance and fathers were clearer models of masculine personality traits but, in general, parents were much more similar than different. On 28 of the 43 comparisons between mothers and fathers there were no significant differences. There were, moreover, no main effects involving sex of child. Daughters and sons were treated in similar fashion. Overall, the data suggest that no nonbiological aspect of parenting is uniquely associated with either parent and that parents may not be the primary agents of differential sex-role socialization.I am indebted to my colleagues Elizabeth Allgeier and Tom Rywick. It has long been known that subjects in certain inference tasks will seek evidence which can confirm their present hypotheses, even in situations where disconfirmatory evidence could be more informative. We sought to alter this tendency in a series of experiments which employed a rule discovery task, the 2-4-6 problem first described by Wason. The first experiment instructionally modified subjects confirmatory tendencies. While a disconfirmatory strategy was easily induced, it did not lead to greater efficiency in discovering the rule. The second experiment introduced subjects to the possibility of disconfirmation only after they had developed a strongly held hypothesis through the use of confirmatory evidence. This manipulation also failed to alter the efficiency of rule discovery. In the third experiment, subjects were taught to use multiple hypotheses at each step, in the manner of Platt's “Strong Inference”. This operation actually worsened performance. Finally, in the fourth experiment, the structure of the problem was altered slightly by asking subjects to seek two interrelated rules. A dramatic increase in performance resulted, perhaps because information which in previous tasks was seen as merely erroneous could now be related to an alternative rule. The four studies have broad implications for the psychological study of inference processes in general, and for the study of scientific inference in particular. 相似文献

Objective: We examined how ‘smoker’ and ‘non-smoker’ self- and group-identities and socio-economic status (SES) may predict smoking behaviour and responses to antismoking measures (i.e. the Dutch smoking ban in hospitality venues). We validated a measure of responses to the smoking ban.Design: Longitudinal online survey study with one-year follow-up (N = 623 at T1 in 2011; N = 188 at T2 in 2012) among daily smokers.Main outcome measures: Intention to quit, quit attempts and ‘rejecting’, ‘victimizing’, ‘socially conscious smoking’ and ‘active quitting’ responses to the smoking ban.Results: Non-smoker identities are more important than smoker identities in predicting intention to quit, quit attempts and responses to the smoking ban, even when controlling for other important predictors such as nicotine dependence. Smokers with stronger non-smoker identities had stronger intentions to quit, were more likely to attempt to quit between measurements, and showed less negative and more positive responses to the smoking ban. The association between non-smoker self-identity and intention to quit was stronger among smokers with lower than higher SES.Conclusion: Antismoking measures might be more effective if they would focus also on the identity of smokers, and help smokers to increase identification with non-smoking and non-smokers. 相似文献

In a sample of 1287 adolescents, it appeared that weekly exercise facilitates a variety of goals; particularly those related to being or remaining healthy, feeling relaxed, not being bored, feeling physically good, not being stressed, and attaining high achievements were endorsed. Sedentary and active adolescents reported a similar order of 10 specific goals with respect to the likelihood of being positively influenced by exercise. The frequency of reported facilitation for each of the goals, however, was higher among the active adolescernts. This suggests that the more exercise is incorporated in daily life, the more it can be regarded as an integral part of the personal goal structure. 相似文献

Traditionally, it has been held that the primary information for vowel identification is provided by formant frequencies in the quasi-steady-state portion of the spoken syllable. Recent search has advanced an alternative view that emphasizes the role of temporal factors and dynamic (time-varying) spectral information in determining the perception of vowels. Nine vowels spoken in /b/ + vowel + /b/ syllables were recorded. The syllables were modified electronically in several ways to suppress various sources of spectral and durational information. Two vowel-perception experiments were performed, testing subjects’ ability to identify vowels in these modified syllables. Results of both experiments revealed the importance of dynamic spectral information at syllable onset and offset (in its proper temporal relation) in permitting vowel identification. On the other hand, steady-state spectral information, deprived of its durational variation, was a poor basis for identification. Results constitute a challenge to traditional accounts of vowel perception and point toward important sources of dynamic information. 相似文献

Recall of time-related and non time-related verbal material by indigenous Papua New Guinean and expatriate European schoolchildren was compared, using a technique reported by Deregowski (1970). At Grade 2 level, the expatriate sample performed significantly better on time-related items, but there was no difference between the groups on the non-temporal items. A further study was conducted with Grade 4 subjects at Waigani multi-racial school and no difference was found between indigenous and expatriate subjects. Grade 4 students at Kila-Kila indigenous school performed at about the same level as Waigani Grade 2 subjects. The results were compared with those reported from Zambia by Deregowski. 相似文献
