A significant but often overlooked aspect of the circumplex structure of the domain of interpersonal functioning is its systematically continuous ordering of the quality of the behavioral variations addressed. It is a domain, in other words, explicitly lacking in categorical boundaries wherein a given behavior can be sharply discriminated from others proximal to it within a shared circumplex space; any identified border is at best a fuzzy one characterized by blending and interpenetration. it is argued that this observation has extended generalizability in respect to the organization of personality, rendering moot and suspect taxonomic systems that postulate categorical entities. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; American Psychiatric Association, 1994) used in the diagnosis of purported derangements of personality is one such system, one that would therefore be expected to yield certain predictable anomalies. These problems are illustrated with reference to the widespread occurrence of artifactual "comorbidities" among psychiatric diagnoses.  相似文献

Asymmetrical hand use by rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) was investigated in a series of tactually and visually guided tasks. The 1st experiment recorded manual preferences of 29 monkeys for solving a haptic discrimination task in a hanging posture. There was a left-hand population bias: 21 monkeys had a left-hand bias, 4 a right-hand bias, and 4 no bias. The 2nd experiment, 4 tasks with 23 to 51 monkeys, investigated the critical components of the 1st experiment by varying the posture (hanging, sitting, or tripedal) and the sensory requirements (tactile or visual). Posture influenced hand bias, with a population-level left-hand bias in hanging and sitting postures, but an almost symmetrical distribution in the tripedal posture. A left-hand bias was found for both sensory modalities, but the bias was stronger in the tactual tasks. Results suggest a possible right-hemisphere specialization in the rhesus for tactile, visual, or spatial processing.  相似文献

Previous studies of the navigational abilities of nonhuman primates have largely been limited to what could be described by a human observer with a pen and paper. Consequently, we have developed a system that uses a pair of cameras to automatically obtain the three-dimensional trajectory of rhesus monkeys performing an outdoor spatial navigation and memory task. The system provides trajectories, path length, speed, and other variables that would be impossible for an unaided observer to note. From trajectory data, we computed and validated a path-length measurement. We use this measurement to compare the navigation abilities of several animals. In addition, we provide quantitative data on the accuracy of a method for automatic behavior detection. Currently, the system is being used to examine the sex differences in spatial navigation of rhesus monkeys. We expect that measures derived from the trajectory data will reveal strategies used by animals to solve spatial problems.  相似文献

Gender bias in medical advertising may be one factor contributing to differential treatment of women and men by physicians. Four hundred forty advertisements from three prominent medical journals were analyzed. Significantly more male, compared to female, recipient ads were found overall as well as for cardiovascular drugs. Males and females were both portrayed stereotypically in the ads, but this trend was especially true for males. The facial expressions of men were more likely to be serious/neutral whereas the facial expressions of women were more often judged to be pleasant. Females tended to be younger than the males that were depicted. Since heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women, underrepresentation of women in cardiovascular ads was questioned. Stereotypical portrayals as well as differences in facial expressions and age of depicted recipients may contribute to physicians being less likely to take the complaints of women, compared to men, seriously.  相似文献

Results of an experimental study varying the sex of the employee and the gender-type of the job demonstrated that men, as well as women, are penalized when they are successful in areas that imply that they have violated gender norms. But the nature of these penalties differed. When depicted as being successful at a female gender-typed job, men were characterized as more ineffectual and afforded less respect than women successful at the same job or than men successful in a gender-consistent position. Women, in contrast, were more interpersonally derogated and disliked when said to be successful at a male gender-typed job. Regardless of these differing characterizations, both men and women successful in gender-inconsistent jobs were reported to be less preferable as bosses than their more normatively consistent counterparts. These results suggest that success, when it violates gender norms, can be disadvantageous for both men and women, but in different ways.  相似文献
