Trust,Distrust, and Feminist Theory

I explore Baier, Held, Okin, Code, Noddings, and Eisler on trust and distrust. This reveals a need for reflection on the analysis, ethics, and dynamics of trust and distrust—especially the distinction between trusting and taking for granted, the feasibility of choosing greater trust, and the possibility of moving from situations of warranted distrust to trust. It is impossible to overcome the need for trust through surveillance, recourse to contracts, or legal institutions.     

Historiography taking issue: analyzing an experiment with heroin abusers

This article discusses the predicament of historians becoming part of the history they are investigating and illustrates the issue in a particular case. The case is that of the randomized controlled trial (RCT)-more specifically, its use for testing the effects of providing heroin to severe heroin abusers. I counter the established view of the RCT as a matter of timeless logic and argue that this research design was developed in the context of administrative knowledge making under twentieth-century economic liberalism of which it epitomizes some central values. I also argue that the applicability of the RCT depends on the degree to which its advocates can define the issue to be studied according to its inherent values. Next, I demonstrate how advocates of an RCT with heroin provision in the Netherlands steered the political discussion on heroin provision and how the values of economic liberalism also shaped the results of the Dutch maintenance experiment. In addition, I relate how my analysis of this experiment became part of political debates in the Netherlands. Contrary to my intentions, adversaries of heroin maintenance used my critique on the heroin RCT as an argument against heroin maintenance. Such risks are inherent to historiography and sociology of science aiming at practical relevance while challenging treasured scientific beliefs. I conclude that it still seems better to expose arguments on unjustified certainties than to suppress them for strategic reasons.     

Case Formulation in Poststructural Narrative Therapy

This article offers a formulation structure for poststructural narrative therapy. As a self-declared constitutionalist approach, narrative therapy has neglected the issue of formulation, perhaps out of concern that it might lead to an essentialist and seemingly objective account of the person. However, provided care is taken around these dangers, there are advantages to formulation: It can provide much needed theoretical discipline in our thought, encourage us to reflect on how persons become trapped in problem-saturated identities and situations, and permit previously unforeseen intervention strategies. This article offers a simple structure for the development of a narrative therapeutic formulation, presented in four parts: subject positions, discourses, normalizing judgments, and disqualified knowledges. An example of a case is used to illustrate.     

Group Therapy, 1976: An Overview

This article discusses short-term group psychotherapy with individuals suffering from an adjustment reaction or reactive depression precipitated by genital herpes. The authors describe their experience in conducting and supervising six such therapy groups and describe several therapeutic factors that emerged as central in the treatment of this population. Among these factors are relief from isolation, the exchange of information, a challenge to defensive denial, exposure to new ideas and behaviors, an opportunity to explore the developmental issues that typically emerge, and the discussion of ethical issues.     

Community as Outsider Witness: Utilising Community Members in the Reconstitution of Problem-Saturated Identities

This study explored community members' ability to enlist discourses affirming of psychiatric patients' quest for generative identities. The participants were members of the public who attended an exhibition of psychiatric patients' artwork (n = 7, age range 18–55). A Foucauldian discourse analysis was used to analyse the research interviews. Results revealed that the majority of community members used dominant cultural discourses to speak about psychiatric patient-artists. These discourses conferred a problem-saturated identity on to psychiatric patients. We conclude that community members can be recruited as outsider witnesses to support psychiatric patients' search for generative identities, provided community members resist discourses that produce problem-saturated identity conclusions.     

A REVIEW OF THE CONTRIBUTION OF PERSONAL CONSTRUCT PSYCHOLOGY TO STAMMERING THERAPY

In the wake of Fransella's (1972) seminal application of Kellyian ideas to the understanding of stammering, the impact of personal construct psychology (PCP) upon speech and language therapists working in this area has been significant. This article reviews the literature and considers the developments in the management of stammering wrought through the application of PCP. A number of key issues relating to the meshing of traditional speech therapy methods and PCP are discussed and these are illustrated further by a specific personal clinical experience.
