Vocational Services for Older Adults or “I Want to Work,But …”

The need for counseling and guidance services for the older job seeker has been stated and described in employment and counseling literature. This article describes one program designed to meet that need through 12-hour job readiness workshops, mini-workshops, and an employment information showcase.     

Roles of the Drug Abuse Counselor in a Correctional Facility

This article focuses on the variety of roles that counselors working with drug offenders are expected to undertake. The authority, counseling, and intercessor roles are discussed, as well as the unwritten roles that are assumed by drug abuse counselors. Potential role conflicts and their effects, both on drug abuse counselors and on their clients, are addressed.     

Full‐Frontal Morality: The Naked Truth about Gender

This paper examines Harold Garfinkel's notion of the natural attitude about sex and his claim that it is fundamentally moral in nature. The author looks beneath the natural attitude in order to explain its peculiar resilience and oppressive force. There she reveals a moral order grounded in the dichotomously sexed bodies so constituted through boundaries governing privacy and decency. In particular, naked bodies are sex‐differentiated within a system of genital representation through gender presentation—a system that helps constitute the very boundaries between the public and private.     

Norm-Referenced Testing and Low-Income Blacks

The purpose of this article is to highlight biases, that is, learning styles and test bias, involved in testing low-income Blacks with norm-referenced, achievement tests and to offer suggestions to assist counselors in improving their students' test performance.     

Problems in Operating a Drug Rehabilitation Center in an Adult Correctional Setting and Some Preventive Guidelines or Strategies

In the operation of a Therapeutic Community (TC) within a prison setting, unique problems arise in blending the two modalities. This article reviews these unique aspects of operating a TC in a correctional setting and discusses possible preventative strategies in ameliorating potential difficulties. Some of the problems include differences in philosophy, nontherapeutic aspects of the prison environment, dependency on the prison environment, and unique staff problems. Specific and general suggestions are made for eliminating or coping with these problems. The authors conclude that changes can be made and effective treatment can exist within the correctional setting.     

The unique and combined benefits of accuracy and positive bias in relationships

An experiment investigated the independent and combined effects of receiving feedback from romantic partners that varied in both accuracy (i.e., profile agreement) and positive bias, as compared with one's self‐perceptions. Both members of 55 romantically involved couples were randomly assigned to receive either high or low levels of accurate or positively biased feedback ostensibly created from a comparison between their self‐ratings and their partner's appraisals. After receiving this feedback, participants rated how positive and intimate they felt in their relationships. As expected, both accuracy and positive bias in partner feedback had independent positive effects. Importantly, positive bias and accuracy were found to operate additively; participants who received feedback that was simultaneously positively biased and accurate rated their relationships particularly positively.     

Standardized Tests Used in Correctional Institutions

This study provides data from 11 adult correctional institutions on the percentage of residents who took standardized tests — educational, intelligence, vocational, and psychological tests — over a one-year period. The Gray-Votaw-Rogers and the General Educational Development tests were the most often administered educational tests. Many more residents were given educational or academic achievement tests than intelligence tests. The two measures of personality most common to all institutions in the study were the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and the Rotter Incomplete Sentence Blank. Five of the 11 institutions gave no vocational tests other than the General Aptitude Test Battery. Many individual differences in institutions are noted.
