Childhood fantasy play and creation of imaginary companions are thought to confer socio-emotional benefits in children, but little is known about how they relate to socio-emotional competence in adulthood. A total of 341 adults (81 males) aged 18 and above (M = 31.47, SD = 12.62) completed an online survey examining their fantasy play as a child, their childhood imaginary companion status, and their adult socio-emotional competence. Adults who reported higher levels of childhood fantasy play were found to be significantly more prosocial, empathetic, and emotionally intelligent than their counterparts after controlling for demographic factors. Recall of a childhood imaginary companion, however, was significantly related only to higher scores for perspective-taking and did not explain unique variance in any adult competence measure. Findings suggest that engagement in fantasy play during childhood may be a precursor to later socio-emotional competence, while benefits previously associated with imaginary companions specifically may not extend into adulthood.  相似文献

This study attempted to dissociate in aphasic patients different aspects of grammatical capacity. Subjects were asked to evaluate sentences containing violations of agreements between pronouns and verbs. Agreements which are considered primarily structural in nature were violated (e.g., a surface object case like “them” placed in a surface subject sentential slot) while other violated agreements seemed to involve both structural and semantic information (e.g., lack of agreement between a pronoun and a verb in terms of the number of people performing the act). These violations were couched in one of three types of sentential frames which varied in terms of syntactic complexity (e.g., active declarative vs. passive syntactic voices). The results revealed that Broca's aphasics found agreement violations difficult to detect in complex syntactic frames. They were quite successful at detecting even violations of the largely structural “case” type of agreement, however, when couched in simpler syntactic frames. Fluent aphasics encountered more difficulty detecting violations of agreements involving both semantic and structural information than agreements which were primarily structural in nature, that is, regardless of the syntactic frame. These unique performance profiles suggest that Broca's aphasics may be agrammatic only with respect to certain aspects of a sentence's structure, and that fluent aphasics may also experience some selective—but different—grammatical deficits.  相似文献

In six experiments, we used the Müller-Lyer illusion to investigate factors in the integration of touch, movement, and spatial cues in haptic shape perception, and in the similarity with the visual illusion. Latencies provided evidence against the hypothesis that scanning times explain the haptic illusion. Distinctive fin effects supported the hypothesis that cue distinctiveness contributes to the illusion, but showed also that it depends on modality-specific conditions, and is not the main factor. Allocentric cues from scanning an external frame (EF) did not reduce the haptic illusion. Scanning elicited downward movements and more negative errors for horizontal convergent figures and more positive errors for vertical divergent figures, suggesting a modality-specific movement effect. But the Müller-Lyer illusion was highly significant for both vertical and horizontal figures. By contrast, instructions to use body-centered reference and to ignore the fins reduced the haptic illusion for vertical figures in touch from 12.60% to 1.7%. In vision, without explicit egocentric reference, instructions to ignore fins did not reduce the illusion to near floor level, though external cues were present. But the visual illusion was reduced to the same level as in touch with instructions that included the use of body-centered cues. The new evidence shows that the same instructions reduced the Müller-Lyer illusion almost to zero in both vision and touch. It suggests that the similarity of the illusions is not fortuitous. The results on touch supported the hypothesis that body-centered spatial reference is involved in integrating inputs from touch and movement for accurate haptic shape perception. The finding that explicit egocentric reference had the same effect on vision suggests that it may be a common factor in the integration of disparate inputs from multisensory sources.  相似文献

Survey data are presented on opinions about agricultural biotechnology and its applications held by agricultural science faculty at highly ranked programs in the United States with and without personal involvement in biotechnology-oriented research. Respondents believed biotech holds much promise, but policy positions vary. These results underscore the relationship between opinion and stakeholder interests in this research, even among scientific experts. Media accounts are often seen as causes, rather than artifacts, of the existence of public controversy; European and now U.S. opposition to food biotechnology is often explained away in terms of such a relationship. The authors argue that where even experts are divided, public opposition cannot reasonably be attributed to poor public understanding or sensationalistic media accounts. Ethical implications for communicating science are explored.  相似文献

Discrepant findings on performance by the two hands in spatial tasks make it difficult to infer spatial coding unambiguously. We tested the hypotheses (a) that the left hand is consistently better in haptic spatial tasks and (b) that adding spatial reference information produces more accurate coding in spatial tasks, independently task and hand effects. Instructions to use external cues from a surrounding frame as well as body-centred cues for reference produced highly significant increases in accuracy in haptic distance and location experiments. The distance experiments showed no hand differences. A small right-hand advantage with longer positioning movements in the recall of locations was significant when combined with left-hand scanning of the frame, but did not relate to reference conditions. Hand use interacted significantly with the location-versus-distance experiments, but showed no interaction with the spatial reference factor, which was highly significant in both experiments. The finding suggests that modes of coding need to be distinguished from cross-lateral effects of sensory input conditions. The study shows that varying reference information offers a potentially useful behavioural tool for distinguishing spatial coding from input and task conditions independently of hand performance. Methodological, practical, and theoretical implications are discussed.  相似文献

The authors attempted to develop and validate the Toddler Attention Questionnaire (TAQ) by examining the relationship between attention and attachment to a professional caregiver. The psychometric reliability and validity of the TAQ was tested with 72 children ranging from 20 to 36 months old. Attentive processes were also measured by the Italian Questionnaire on Temperament, while attachment behaviors to professional caregivers were measured by the Attachment Q-Sort. Factor analysis supported four identifiable factors reflecting different concepts, theoretically discussed, related to attentive processes: attentive flexibility, attentive lability, attentive detachment, and attentive disorientation. Attachment security to professional caregivers is predicted through attentive flexibility and negative emotionality. Secure attachment behaviors were found to be related to flexibility of attention. The implications of the findings for future theoretical and empirical development of research in this field are also discussed.  相似文献

The present study explored the prevalence of self-reported stuttering in a Finnish twin population and examined the extent to which the variance in liability to stuttering was attributable to genetic and environmental effects. We analyzed data of 1728 Finnish twins, born between 1961 and 1989. The participants were asked to complete a questionnaire on speech, language, and voice. In two of the questions they were asked to report the occurrence of childhood and present stuttering of their own and that of their sibling. According to the results, 2.3% (52) of the participants were reported to have stuttered as children and 28.8% of them (15) were reported to continue to stutter in adulthood. There was no significant gender difference in the prevalence of stuttering in either childhood or adulthood. For childhood stuttering, the tetrachoric correlation was higher for monozygotic pairs (r=.74) than for dizygotic pairs (r=.27). By means of structural equation modeling it was found that 82% of the variance in liability to childhood stuttering was attributable to additive genetic effects, with the remaining 18% due to non-shared environmental effects. In conclusion, the results of the present study confirm findings from prior studies and support a strong genetic and only a moderate non-shared environmental effect on stuttering. Potential small differences in the prevalence of stuttering in different populations are suggested by our data. In an attempt to provide a first incomplete answer to the question raised by the editors as to “what cures traumatized patients,” I join my voice to that of the many authors who associate therapeutic action with the process of affect regulation that develops within the analytic dyad. I believe that we are yet to find effective ways of describing the therapeutic process so that the fundamental elements can be reflected upon and studied by therapists. This is especially important when we are working with severely traumatized patients. One of the challenges we are facing today has to do with the way in which therapists communicate such experiences to each other. In our reflections, it all depends on the level at which we situate ourselves, if the therapist places himself/herself at the local level of the interactive process he/she needs to learn to stand in the uncertainty of the security and change paradox relying on the intersubjective process itself. With traumatized patients the challenge in psychotherapy almost always involves the ‘treatment that hurts’ paradox.  相似文献
