A unified fielder theory is presented that explains how humans navigate to intercept targets that approach from either above
or below the horizon. Despite vastly different physical forces affecting airborne and ground-based moving targets, a common
set of invariant perception-action principles appears to guide pursuers. When intercepting airborne projectiles, fielders
keep the target image rising at a constant optical speed in a vertical image plane and moving in a constant optical direction
in an image plane that remains perpendicular to gaze direction. We confirm that fielders use the same strategies to intercept
grounders. Fielders maintained a cotangent of gaze angle that decreases linearly with time (accounting for 98.7% of variance
in ball speed) and a linear optical trajectory along an image plane that remains perpendicular to gaze direction (accounting
for 98.2% of variance in ball position). The universality of maintaining optical speed and direction for both airborne and
ground-based targets supports the theory that these mechanisms are domain independent. 相似文献

An experiment was designed to show that some categories, called Type C categories, are mediated by an abstract, interpretively derived conceptual base. To this end, each of four groups of subjects ranked 10 sentences (instances) in terms of how well they illustrated the figurative meaning of a proverb (Proverb group), or how well they illustrated the meaning of an excellent interpretation of the proverb (Excellent Interpretation group), or a poor interpretation of the proverb (Poor Interpretation group), or an unspecified, unstated underlying meaning (Control group). The Excellent Interpretation groups' rankings correlated highly with standard ranks established by the Proverb group, but the Poor Interpretation group's and the Control group's ranking were uncorrelated with these two group's rankings. Apparently, the subjects in the Proverb group accomplished their rankings by using a conceptual base or microtheory similar in meaning to the interpretation used by the Excellent Interpretation group. Discussion centered on the question of whether the Classical, Probabilistic, or Exemplar Views of categorization (Smith & Medin, 1981) could account for the results. It was argued that they could not, basically because Type C categories are more dependent upon interpretive processes than the more perceptually based Type P categories to which these views have traditionally been applied.IBM. 相似文献

This research introduces a new naive physics belief, the Galileo bias, whereby people ignore air resistance and falsely believe that all objects fall at the same rate. Survey results revealed that this bias is held by many and is surprisingly strongest for those with formal physics instruction. In 2 experiments, 98 participants dropped ball pairs varying in volume and/or mass from a height of 10 m, with the goal of both balls hitting the ground simultaneously. The majority of participants in both experiments adopted a single strategy consistent with the Galileo bias, showing no improvement across trials. Yet, for participants reporting intentions of dropping both balls at the same time, the differences between release points were significantly greater than 0 ms. These findings support separate but interacting cognition and perception-action systems. 相似文献

Although risky decision-making has been posited to contribute to the maladaptive behavior of individuals with psychopathic tendencies, the performance of psychopathic groups on a common task of risky decision-making, the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT; Bechara, Damasio, Damasio, & Anderson, 1994), has been equivocal. Different aspects of psychopathy (personality traits, antisocial deviance) and/or moderating variables may help to explain these inconsistent findings. In a sample of college students (N = 129, age 18–27), we examined the relationship between primary and secondary psychopathic features and IGT performance. A measure of impulsivity was included to investigate its potential as a moderator. In a joint model including main effects and interactions between primary psychopathy, secondary psychopathy and impulsivity, only secondary psychopathy was significantly related to risky IGT performance, and this effect was not moderated by the other variables. This finding supports the growing literature suggesting that secondary psychopathy is a better predictor of decision-making problems than the primary psychopathic personality traits of lack of empathy and remorselessness. 相似文献

Three cases will be presented in which remote, accurate verbal and visual memories were present in, and from, toddlerhood for which the earliest age was 16 months. The age at which memories can be verbalized depends on the age of onset of speech phrases and cognitive ability. The memory may remain for over 30 years. Toddlers spontaneously report traumatic memories. The earlier the trauma occurs, the less the child is able to organize the material into a narrative form. Statistical learning is characterized by detection of regularities in one's environment without an awareness or intention to learn, and it may play a critical role in language and social behavior. Accordingly, in this study we investigated the electrophysiological correlates of visual statistical learning in young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using an event‐related potential shape learning paradigm, and we examined the relation between visual statistical learning and cognitive function. Compared to typically developing (TD) controls, the ASD group as a whole showed reduced evidence of learning as defined by N1 (early visual discrimination) and P300 (attention to novelty) components. Upon further analysis, in the ASD group there was a positive correlation between N1 amplitude difference and non‐verbal IQ, and a positive correlation between P300 amplitude difference and adaptive social function. Children with ASD and a high non‐verbal IQ and high adaptive social function demonstrated a distinctive pattern of learning. This is the first study to identify electrophysiological markers of visual statistical learning in children with ASD. Through this work we have demonstrated heterogeneity in statistical learning in ASD that maps onto non‐verbal cognition and adaptive social function. 相似文献

In the present work, we first clarify a more precise definition of instantaneous optical angles in control tasks such as interception. We then test how well two interceptive strategies that have been proposed for catching fly balls account for human Frisbee-catching behavior. The first strategy is to maintain the ball's image along a linear optical trajectory (LOT). The second is to keep vertical optical ball velocity decreasing while maintaining constant lateral optical velocity. We found that an LOT accounted for an average of over 96% of the variance in optical Frisbee movement, while maintenance of vertical and lateral optical velocities was random. This work confirms a common interception strategy used across interceptive tasks, extending to complex target trajectories. 相似文献

This study simultaneously tested 2 theories that attempt to explain differences in job satisfaction: job characteristics theory (Hackman & Oldham, 1976) and social information processing theory (Salancik & Pfeffer, 1978). The theories were tested using data collected from the civilian employees of the public works division at a U.S. military base. The results indicated that individuals' social environments had significant effects upon their attitudes. Multiple social networks were used to operationalize individuals' social environments. The results also suggested that job characteristics had an independent main effect upon job satisfaction, in addition to the effects of the social environment. Based on prior research, employees' past experience and self‐monitoring were tested as moderators of the effects of the social environment, and growth need strength was tested as a moderator of the effects of job characteristics upon job satisfaction. Only self‐monitoring was found to have a significant moderating effect on the relationship between information from the social environment and job satisfaction, and growth need strength had no significant moderating effect. 相似文献
