Subtypes of psychopathology in children referred for neuropsychological assessment.

The validity of a Personality Inventory for Children-Revised edition (PIC-R) typology was examined in a sample of 323 children aged 6-16 years. These children had been referred to a children's mental health centre for neuropsychological assessment. In study 1, K-means cluster analysis (k = 12) was applied to the PIC clinical scales in an attempt to replicate the 12 clusters identified by Gdowski, Lachar, and Kline (1985). Partial cluster replication was achieved. Examination of the obtained clusters revealed significant overlap, suggesting that fewer clusters would represent an optimal solution. In study 2, a two-stage cluster analysis yielded a seven-cluster solution consistent with several key forms of psychopathology previously reported in the literature using specific neuropsychological populations. Identified subtypes included profiles characterized as: normal, cognitive deficit, cognitive deficit with internalized psychopathology, cognitive deficit with social impairment, cognitive deficit with hyperactivity, cognitive deficit with both internalized and externalized psychopathology, and combined internalized and externalized psychopathology without a cognitive deficit component.     

Verbal learning and visuomotor attention in Alzheimer's disease and geriatric depression

We compared the verbal learning and visuomotor attention of 34 Alzheimer's patients and 18 depressive patients. Verbal learning was assessed using The Hopkins Verbal Learning Test--Revised (HVLT--R); visuomotor attention was assessed using the Trail Making Test (TMT). The Alzheimer's patients had significantly lower scores on immediate and delayed recall of a word list. There was a nonsignificant trend in this group toward a fewer number of true positives and a greater number of false positives. Alzheimer's patients were significantly slower on Trails A, with a nonsignificant trend toward slower performance on Trails B. No difference was observed in accuracy of attentional processing. The results are discussed in terms of other factors, such as stage of cognitive decline, which might have influenced the findings.     

Who uses services for homeless people? An investigation amongst people sleeping rough in London

From a sample of 389 homeless people in London, the characteristics of those who used services for homeless people are presented and the implications for service planning and delivery explored. The Relation of Guidance to the Teaching of Reading

Counselors concerned with the preventive aspect of their work will suggest to administrators ways of improving reading instruction. They will stimulate, encourage, and assist teachers in improving their instruction in reading. The counselor will assist the reading teacher in identifying and grouping students who need special instruction in reading. If the counselor has had preparation in the teaching of reading, he can work with cases in which guidance problems turn into reading problems. There are many advantages in preparing dual specialists-counselors who have acquired competence in working with reading problems, and reading specialists and consultants who have some competence in personnel work.
