A measure of time perspective with the TAT and some issues of reliability

In an effort to duplicate high interrater reliability coefficients reported in the use of Epley and Ricks' (1963) time orientation scoring system with the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), two pairs of judges and two different training procedures were employed. Reliability coefficients considerably lower than those quoted by other researchers were found. One method of using the system was to have judges discuss scoring differences during training and at various times during a research project until perfect agreement was reached. When used as an adjunct with periodic assessment' of reliability as judges scored a large number of stories, reliability coefficients within a range acceptable for research purposes were obtained. This procedure is presented with correlational evidence for the presence of the time factor that the scoring system purports to measure.     

Forecasting “friends forever”: A longitudinal investigation of sustained closeness between best friends

Using data collected across 19 years, the chief goal of this study was to discover predictors of continued relational closeness between best friends. Participants were same‐sex and cross‐sex best friend pairs recruited from a small Midwestern college. In 1983, participants completed several tests and activities designed to assess facets of intimacy, with follow‐up studies in 1987 and 2002 measuring relational closeness. Regression analysis indicates that both manifest similarity and months of closeness in 1983 are associated with relational closeness in 2002. These results suggest that the investment of resources in the friendship and similarity between friends facilitate friendship longevity and that Kelley et al.’s (1983) conceptualization of closeness as related to interdependence is empirically robust.     

An alternative view of the spouse of the therapist

A therapist's relationship with a spouse, i.e., partner in living, has an important influence on the quality of his or her professional functioning as this relationship offers a vital source of personal support and renewal. This relationship may aid in counterbalancing the weight of the therapist's professional demeanor by focusing on aspects of the therapist's interpersonal relatedness not commonly experienced with other professionals or with clients. The concept of a support-power base from which a therapist extends him or herself toward clients provides a context within which to view the therapist-spouse relationship. If this relationship is approached by the therapist without reliance upon a well-practiced professional role, it can make available opportunities for self-exploration which lead to enhanced personal growth and more effective functioning both personally and professionally.     

Construct representation and definitions in psychopathology: the case of delusion

Background  

Delusion is one of the most intriguing psychopathological phenomena and its conceptualization remains the subject of genuine debate. Claims that it is ill-defined, however, are typically grounded on essentialist expectations that a given definition should capture the core of every instance acknowledged as delusion in the clinical setting.
