“Should this remain?” anna freud's misgivings concerning the freud-jung letters

Abstract

The Freud-Jung letters were the first major correspondence in which Freud's letters were published in an unexpurgated form. Through a study of the unpublished editorial correspondence, this essay demonstrates that the uncensored publication was achieved despite Anna Freud's strong opposition, represented by a memorandum she wrote in 1970 entited “Reservations for the edition,” which is published here in translation for the first time. It is argued that the resistance to Anna Freud's demands by the editors may be seen to have marked a decisive turn in how Freud's correspondences were edited.     

After liber novus

This paper reflects on the conference question concerning the clinical and theoretical significance of Jung's Liber Novus, two years after its initial publication, and looks at how Jung himself reflected upon it and how it informed his turn to alchemy, with particular attention to the theme of opposites and their reconciliation in Liber Novus, later taken up in Mysterium Coniunctionis.

An account is given of the constitution of several components of the Freudocentric reading of Jung and the genesis of analytical psychology, which, it is argued, has led to their mislocation in the intellectual history of the twentieth century.     

Static dielectric constants of the binary mixtures of N-methylformamide with water,ethyl alcohol,ethylene glycol,dimethylsulphoxide, acetone and 1,4-dioxane

The static dielectric constants of binary mixtures of N-methylformamide (NMF), used as a solute with the solvents water (W), ethyl alcohol (EA), ethylene glycol (EG), dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO), acetone (Ac) and 1,4-dioxane (Dx), have been measured over the entire concentration range at 30°C. The negative values of excess dielectric constant and less-than-unity values of the corrective Kirkwood correlation factor of these binary mixtures are used to analyse the formation of H-bond complexes and molar ratio of the stable adduct. In these systems, the unassociated mixture constituents, DMSO, Ac and Dx, act as structure-breakers for self-associated linear structures of NMF, whereas, both the self-associated mixture constituents (W, EA and EG mixtures with NMF) act as structure-breakers to each other during the complexations. It is found that the large variations in the strength of H-bond complexation and the effective number of parallel aligned dipoles in the mixtures are governed by the dielectric constant of the solvents.
