C. C. Wood and R S. Day have shown that reaction times (RT) to target segments within a syllable are significantly longer when the unattended segment in the syllable (either stop consonant or vowel) is varied randomly than when it is held constant. This has been taken as evidence for the perceptual unity of a stop con sonant-vowel syllable. However, this conclusion could be accepted with much more confidence if it could be shown that random variation in unattended segments does not cause an increase in RT if the unattended segments are not in the same syllable as the target segment. The present study, using bisyllabic natural speech stimuli, (1) reconfirms Wood and Day’s results, but (2) finds that random variation in unattended nontautosyllabic segments also results in significantly longer RTs than without nontautosyllabic variation. Segmental vs syllabic speech perception thus remains an open question.  相似文献

Philosophy makes no progress. It fails to do so in the way science and mathematics make progress. By “no progress” is meant that there is no successive advance of a well‐established body of knowledge—no views are definitively established or definitively refuted. Yet philosophers often talk and act as if the subject makes progress, and that its point and value lies in its doing so, while in fact they also approach the subject in ways that clearly contradict any claim to progress. This article presents evidence for, and a theoretical explanation of, the view that philosophy makes no progress, concluding with an account of what philosophy is and what the point and value of it is. Philosophy should not be shy about being what it is, nor should it pretend to be what it is not. What it is should be reflected in philosophizing and the way it is taught.  相似文献

A short-term serial recall task consisting of lists of five American Sign Language signs and lists of five printed English words was administered to eight congenitally deaf subjects. For both modes of presentation, the stimuli in a given list were (1) high in phonological relatedness, (2) high in cherological relatedness (i.e., they were similar in terms of the formational attributes of their sign-equivalents), or (3) low in both phonological and cherological similarity (control). For both modes of presentation, recall accuracy was significantly lower on cherologically related lists than on both phonologically related lists and control lists. Phonologically related lists did not differ significantly from control lists. These results suggest the possibility that ways of looking at human memory which rely on a preference for phonological coding in short-term memory processes may reflect the audiocentricity of the experimenter rather than the inherent nature of such processes.  相似文献

Rats exposed to a simultaneous compound of a flavor and sucrose subsequently exhibited a preference for the flavor over water. This preference persisted across repeated testing even though the flavor was presented in the absence of sucrose. The preference did, however, extinguish if the rats were hungry when trained or tested, or if they had been reexposed to sucrose between training and test. Though failing to extinguish the preference, presentation of the flavor outside the compound protected it from the effects of sucrose devaluation, indicating that these presentations extinguished the within-compound association between the flavor and sucrose. The authors conclude that the hedonic reaction elicited by sucrose imbues the flavor with the same hedonic properties, and these properties maintain the preference independently of the flavor-sucrose association.  相似文献

The purpose here is to cast doubt on some utilitarian non-rights-based arguments that are generally thought to be decisive objections to voluntary and non-voluntary euthanasia. The aim is not to prove that euthanasia is morally vindicated (although I think rights-based arguments can do this) but rather to contend that such arguments, far from being decisively anti-euthanasia, can be made to point equally in the opposite direction.  相似文献

Mass media campaigns are increasingly seen as an important part of suicide prevention; however, despite their popularity, their efficacy is not well understood. The current review aimed to address key knowledge gaps regarding how mass media campaigns can be optimized to prevent suicide, by looking at their global efficacy, and mechanisms related to successful outcomes. A systematic review of the international literature examined studies which evaluated mass media campaigns targeted at suicide prevention, where suicide behaviors (mortality, attempts) or suicide literacy (knowledge, attitudes, help‐seeking) was identified as a primary outcome. Thirteen articles describing 12 unique campaigns met eligibility criteria. For behavioral outcomes, mass media campaigns appear to be most effective when delivered as part of a multicomponent suicide prevention strategy, while “standalone campaigns” were modestly useful for increasing suicide literacy. Level of exposure, repeat exposure, and community engagement appeared to be fundamental to the success of these campaigns; however, these constructs were poorly adhered to in the development and implementation of campaigns. Overall, the mixed quality of the included studies highlights a need for increased quantity, consistency, and quality of evaluations to advance the evidence base.  相似文献

A review of Aboriginal suicide prevention programs were conducted to highlight promising projects and strategies. A content analysis of gray literature was conducted to identify interventions reported to have an impact in reducing suicidal rates and behaviors. Most programs targeted the whole community and were delivered through workshops, cultural activities, or creative outlets. Curriculums included suicide risk and protective factors, warning signs, and mental health. Many programs were poorly documented and evaluations did not include suicidal outcomes. Most evaluations considered process variables. Results from available outcome evaluations suggest that employing a whole of community approach and focusing on connectedness, belongingness and cultural heritage may be of benefit. Despite the challenges, there is a clear need to evaluate outcomes if prevention is to be progressed.  相似文献
