Group decision process and incrementalism in organizational decision making   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
In two studies examining resource allocation, support is found for the notion that group decisions are affected in systematic ways depending on whether or not there was individual consideration of the problem before meeting as a group. Specifically, compared to no prior consideration groups, prior consideration groups (1) escalate their commitment more in progress (i.e., ongoing) decisions, and (2) are less willing to concentrate resources on a single project in adoption (i.e., resource utilization) decisions. The findings challenge the blanket assertion that promoting divergent views in a group decision context is always related to better decisions.  相似文献

This paper examines the role of doubt in the classification of inferential reasons in Dharmottara’s Nyāyabindu?īkā, and in the works of his Nyāya rivals Ke?avami?ra and Jayantabha??a. As deeply systematic thinkers, larger themes in these philosophers’ metaphysics directly determine the more local issues in epistemology and inferential theory, helping to explain, and show the significance of, the differences in their accounts of inferential reasons. For Ke?ava, an ontology which includes real universals allows for an externalist, reliabilist epistemology, on which the conditions for a genuine inferential reason can be stated in an absolute (as opposed to cogniser-relative) manner. For Dharmottara, on the other hand, an ontology in which mentally constructed universals are imposed upon real particulars leads to greater dependency on the cognising agent, such that the triple conditions for the inferential reason are formulated in a cogniser-relative way. These differences lead to a more restrictive list of acceptable reasons on Dharmottara’s part, which excludes cases involving doubt.  相似文献

In this paper, we defend a novel, multidimensional account of representational unification, which we distinguish from integration. The dimensions of unity are simplicity, generality and scope, non-monstrosity, and systematization. In our account, unification is a graded property. The account is used to investigate the issue of how research traditions contribute to representational unification, focusing on embodied cognition in cognitive science. Embodied cognition contributes to unification even if it fails to offer a grand unification of cognitive science. The study of this failure shows that unification, contrary to what defenders of mechanistic explanation claim, is an important mechanistic virtue of research traditions.

Variations in the structure of the neocortex induced by single gene mutations may be extreme or subtle. They differ from variations in neocortical structure encountered across and within species in that these "normal" structural variations are adaptive (both structurally and behaviorally), whereas those associated with disorders of development are not. Here we propose that they also differ in principle in that they represent disruptions of molecular mechanisms that are not normally regulatory to variations in the histogenetic sequence. We propose an algorithm for the operation of the neuronogenetic sequence in relation to the overall neocortical histogenetic sequence and highlight the restriction point of the G1 phase of the cell cycle as the master regulatory control point for normal coordinate structural variation across species and importantly within species. From considerations based on the anatomic evidence from neocortical malformation in humans, we illustrate in principle how this overall sequence appears to be disrupted by molecular biological linkages operating principally outside the control mechanisms responsible for the normal structural variation of the neocortex. Genetic factors and the measurement of exploratory activity   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The progenitor strains C57BL/6 and BALB/c and the seven recombinant inbred strains derived from them were used to examine the genetic relationship between two measures of activity and hippocampal lamination defect (Hld). Fifty-three mice (Mus musculus), 9 from each of the progenitor strains and 5 from each recombinant inbred strain, were tested for 16 min in a device which permitted both unobstructed traverse of the length of a runaway and contact with objects which were aligned alongside the runway. The C57BL/6 mice produced significantly more locomotor (runway traversal) activity, whereas the BALB/c showed significantly greater amounts of investigatory (object contact) activity. This reversal of relative position in the distribution of scores was not present for the recombinant strains. There was no dichotomous separation of recombinant strains for either measure. Examination of activity in terms of four consecutive 4-min periods indicates differences among the strains with respect to changes during the test session. The strains may be dichotomized with respect to decrement in activity within the 16-min session, but these groups do not correspond with those reported by others. The inference of a single genetic determinant for activity measured either as locomotor or investigatory responses is not supported by these data, nor is there any apparent relationship between activity and Hld. The critical influence of genetic-environment interactions in determining behavior and the effect of the selection of measurement techniques upon interpretation of data are emphasized by these data.  相似文献
