Co-Occurring Traumatic Brain Injury,PTSD Symptoms,and Alcohol Use in Veterans

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been identified as a significant health problem among veterans. Recent research demonstrates the potential interaction and magnification of symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders (SUD) in veterans with a history of TBI; however, there is very limited research on the co-occurrence of the three conditions. Veterans (N = 115) with comorbid PTSD and SUD completed a baseline assessment for enrollment into a larger treatment study. As part of that assessment, participants completed a TBI screener as well as self-report measures for pain and physical health, affective symptoms, and substance use. Almost half of the sample (48 %) endorsed a history of a previous head trauma with loss of consciousness (LOC). Participants with and without head trauma with LOC were compared across various measures of functioning. Increased severity of physical health complaints and affective symptoms were reported by the TBI group compared to controls. However, the increases in affective symptoms were relatively small. No group differences were observed for alcohol use. Together, the findings suggest that treatment-seeking veterans with a history of head trauma with LOC may present with roughly equivalent symptoms of PTSD and SUD to those without said history.     

Intolerance of Uncertainty and Health-Related Anxiety in Youth amid the COVID-19 Pandemic: Understanding and Weathering the Continuing Storm

The COVID-19 pandemic is a public health crisis that continues to impact individuals worldwide. While children may be less susceptible to severe medical complications, they are nonetheless vulnerable to stress and anxiety associated with the pandemic. However, current understanding of psychological functioning and potential strategies to mitigate distress amid a pandemic is naturally limited. Consequently, this article is an attempt to fill that gap. Existing literature on pandemics, health-related anxieties, intolerance of uncertainty, and psychopathological sequelae is summarized within the context of the COVID-19 outbreak. Conclusions from the empirical data and emerging theoretical models are reviewed and synthesized. Finally, several potentially engaging and effective examples of developmentally appropriate interventions targeting intolerance of uncertainty and health-related anxieties in pediatric patients during the peri- and post-pandemic periods are described.

Zusammenfassung Die vakante Sitzung und die Vakanzregel sind Bestandteil jeder psychoanalytischen Behandlung. Gleichzeitig gibt es Widerstände, sich mit diesem Phänomen zu befassen, so dass eine solide Gegenübertragungsanalyse erforderlich ist. Die Bedeutung der vakanten Sitzung ergibt sich aus den Überlegungen zur Theorie des Behandlungsprozesses und zu den Rahmenbedingungen für das psychoanalytische Arbeiten; Ausgangspunkt für die Beschäftigung mit der Vakanzregel in der Behandlung ist die Freudsche-Definition. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Vorstellung einer Kontinuität des Prozesses, die sich in einer verlässlichen zeitlichen Abfolge der Sitzungen äußert und durch die die einzelne Sitzung Bedeutung bekommt. Es wird eine Vakanzregel vorgeschlagen, die der Kontinuität des Prozesses und der Verantwortlichkeit von Psychoanalytiker und Analysand für diesen Prozess gerecht wird. Modifikationen der Vakanzregel (Absage-, Indikations-, Stundenvergabe-, Kontingent- und Honorar-Reduktions-Regelung) werden besprochen und häufige Einwände gegen bestimmte Formen der Vakanzregel werden diskutiert.

The missed sessionConsiderations on the missed session and vacancy rule in psychoanalytical treatment

The missed session and the rule for vacancy are part of every psychoanalytic treatment. At the same time there is a resistance to deal with this phenomenon, since it necessitates a careful countertransference-analysis. The meaning of the missed session follows some thoughts about the theory of the process and the frame of the psychoanalytic treatment. The starting point of the vacancy rule is Freuds definition. The continuity of the process, which is expressed by the reliable succession of the sessions, is the central idea. A vacancy rule is proposed, which takes into account the continuity of the process as well as the responsibility of the analyst and the patient for the process. Modifications of the vacancy rule and the most common objections are discussed.

     

Dopamine induces LTP differentially in apical and basal dendrites through BDNF and voltage-dependent calcium channels

The dopaminergic modulation of long-term potentiation (LTP) has been studied well, but the mechanism by which dopamine induces LTP (DA-LTP) in CA1 pyramidal neurons is unknown. Here, we report that DA-LTP in basal dendrites is dependent while in apical dendrites it is independent of activation of L-type voltage-gated calcium channels (VDCC). Activation via NMDAR is critical for the induction of DA-LTP in both apical and basal dendrites, but only BDNF is required for the induction and maintenance of DA-LTP in apical dendrites. We report that dopaminergic modulation of LTP is lamina-specific at the Schaffer collateral/commissural synapses in the CA1 region.     

Influence of test temperature on the size effect in molybdenum small-scale compression pillars

Previous research has shown that body-centred cubic (bcc) metals exhibit a smaller size dependence of strength than what is commonly observed in face-centred cubic (fcc) metals. This work investigates compression testing of focused ion beam-manufactured molybdenum pillars ranging in size from 300?nm to 5?μm, both above and below its critical temperature at 300 and 500?K. At 500?K the size effect is found to be consistent with what is observed in fcc metals, owing to the increased mobility of screw dislocations.     

Different compartments of apical CA1 dendrites have different plasticity thresholds for expressing synaptic tagging and capture

The consolidation process from short- to long-term memory depends on the type of stimulation received from a specific neuronal network and on the cooperativity and associativity between different synaptic inputs converging onto a specific neuron. We show here that the plasticity thresholds for inducing LTP are different in proximal and distal compartments of apical dendrites. In addition, we show interactions between the proximal and distal compartments of the apical dendrites by providing evidence that even a subthreshold stimulus can activate plasticity-related proteins, such as PKMζ, enabling associativity between two distinct dendritic compartments in apical dendrites to occur.     

Frege’s <Emphasis Type="Italic">Begriffsschrift</Emphasis> as a <Emphasis Type="Italic">lingua characteristica</Emphasis>

In this paper I suggest an answer to the question of what Frege means when he says that his logical system, the Begriffsschrift, is like the language Leibniz sketched, a lingua characteristica, and not merely a logical calculus. According to the nineteenth century studies, Leibniz’s lingua characteristica was supposed to be a language with which the truths of science and the constitution of its concepts could be accurately expressed. I argue that this is exactly what the Begriffsschrift is: it is a language, since, unlike calculi, its sentential expressions express truths, and it is a characteristic language, since the meaning of its complex expressions depend only on the meanings of their constituents and on the way they are put together. In fact it is in itself already a science composed in accordance with the Classical Model of Science. What makes the Begriffsschrift so special is that Frege is able to accomplish these goals with using only grammatical or syncategorematic terms and so has a medium with which he can try to show analyticity of the theorems of arithmetic.     

Increasing Help Exchange in an Urban Neighborhood: The Effects of a Neighborhood Directory1

A longitudinal study was conducted in two neighborhoods in Raleigh, North Carolina, which were matched on demographic characteristics. During this period, a neighborhood directory appeared in one of the neighborhoods that provided personal information about each of the households listed as well as a listing of skills and equipment that residents were interested in exchanging with neighbors. The results showed a small, nonsignificant, increase in the level of general help exchange in the Directory neighborhood and a utilization rate of 14%, that is, 14% of the residents used the directory to seek assistance from a neighbor or offer assistance to a neighbor. There were no changes in the level of acquaintance with neighbors and satisfaction with other neighbors and the neighborhood, but there was an unexpected decline in the level of involvement in neighborhood activities. No changes in these areas were observed in the matching control neighborhood. Across both neighborhoods, residents who showed higher levels of help exchange with neighbors were better acquainted with their neighbors, more involved in the neighborhood, younger, better educated, and more likely to be married. The results are discussed in terms of recent research and theory on neighborliness and mutual aid between neighbors.     

Issues and Insights: Working With God: Managing Conservative Christian Beliefs That May Interfere With Counseling

Counselors who work with conservative Christians may ask how to respect a client's values when “God” seems to be saying something contrary to what the counselor believes is in the client's best interests. In a managed care era of decreasing choice about one's counselor, referral of such clients to a conservative Christian counselor is not always an option. “Working with God” when counseling conservative Christian clients requires counselors to understand conservative Christian beliefs. This article portrays conservative Christianity as a culture and articulates conservative Christian beliefs that may challenge the counseling process, suggesting options within the framework of these beliefs.
