Application patterns when applicants know the odds: implications for selection research and practice
Unlike previous research that found small differences between population standard deviations and applicant pool standard deviations (P. R. Sackett & D. J. Ostgaard, 1994; D. S. Ones & C. Viswesvaran, 2003), this study revealed a 23% disparity between Law School Admission Test (LSAT) scores of all LSAT test takers and those of LSAT test takers who applied to law school. This study also illustrated robust applicant self-selection behavior across different law school ranks. These findings are important, because predictor scores of applicants who know their scores in advance and perceive small selection ratios necessitate substantially smaller range restriction corrections than those that would be required by population standard deviations. Furthermore, these findings more generally reveal that applicants who know their scores in advance behave quite differently from applicants who do not. 相似文献

Test administration by computer has been available for some time, yet such procedures have been little more than electronic substitutes for conventional paper-and-peneil tests. The Flexible Tester allows the researcher to ask as many subquestions as desired and make all questions contingent upon subject response. The logic of questioning is created through a dialogue with the program rather than by direct programming. The program is suitable for any questioning procedure, including structured interviews expressible in the false/true format. 相似文献

The media creates and sustains knowledge about socially relevant issues such as crime, mental illness, and policing. Past research suggests that while the media portrayal of the police is undoubtedly complex, their portrayal of people experiencing mental illness remains mainly negative. The depiction of their encounters in the mass media is of considerable interest because of the influential role the media has on public opinion and debate; however, there is a lack of current research in this area. This study aimed to examine media items in the major newspapers across Australia between January 2006 and December 2007 (n = 77) to investigate their portrayal of this interface. The dominant themes encountered in the initial analysis depicted people experiencing mental illness as dangerous and a threat to the public, where the mental health system has failed to manage them adequately. Further analyses found that people experiencing mental illness were stigmatised in a third of the media items reviewed and were represented significantly more negatively in these encounters than the police. Implications of these findings and some suggestions regarding possible strategies that could improve socially responsible media reporting and public discourse on mental illness are proposed. 相似文献

Can we search for items based on their type of motion? We consider here visual search based on three types of motion: (i) ballistic motion, in which objects move in a straight line until they encounter a display boundary; (ii) random-walk motion, in which objects change direction randomly; (iii) composite motion, in which objects move with random fluctuations around a generally ballistic trajectory. The asymmetric pattern of search efficiency can be explained by assuming that visual attention is guided by processes sensitive to the presence of linear motion and change in motion. The results do not reveal a more sophisticated ability to segregate items based on the nature of their motion. 相似文献

Is content addressable in the representation that subserves performance in multiple-object-tracking (MOT) experiments? We devised an MOT variant that featured unique, nameable objects (cartoon animals) as stimuli. There were two possible response modes: standard, in which observers were asked to report the locations of all target items, and specific, in which observers had to report the location of a particular object (e.g., “Where is the zebra?”). A measure of capacity derived from accuracy allowed for comparisons of the results between conditions. We found that capacity in the specific condition (1.4 to 2.6 items across several experiments) was always reliably lower than capacity in the standard condition (2.3 to 3.4 items). Observers could locate specific objects, indicating a content-addressable representation. However, capacity differences between conditions, as well as differing responses to the experimental manipulations, suggest that there may be two separate systems involved in tracking, one carrying only positional information, and one carrying identity information as well. 相似文献
