BAEP studies hint at different neurophysiological findings between gamma and delta alcoholics. On the first day of withdrawal gamma alcoholics show slight vegetative withdrawal symptoms in the form of CNS hyperexitability trough the shortening of the early IPL. However delta alcoholics show prolongations of the late IPL which can be interpreted as a consequence of brain stem transmission disorders resulting from chronic intoxication. After four weeks the BAEP deviations found in both groups indicate a clear tendency of recovery which points to functional disorders.  相似文献

Science and religion commonly reside in either an awkward peaceful co-existence or in bitter conflict. That conflict emerges especially in college students as they acquire knowledge about physical, biological, and social sciences. Most college students bring their shallow childhood religious instruction to their college classes. Neuroscience can help students realise how their religious views are affected by their biology, conditioning, experiences, culture, education, emotions, and cognitive processes. In turn, religion can provide world views that challenge neuroscience and remind us of how much remains unknown and may even be unknowable. This report summarises the author’s three semesters’ experience of teaching an upper-division undergraduate essay and discussion course in which students discover how neuroscience and religion inform each other.  相似文献

We present a model of a fundamental property of consciousness as the capacity of a system to opt among presented alternatives. Any system possessing this capacity is “conscious” in some degree, whether or not it has the higher capacity of reflecting on its opting. We argue that quantum systems, composed of microphysical particles, as studied by quantum mechanics, possess this quality in a protomental form. That is, such particles display the capacity to opt among alternatives, even though they lack the ability to experience or communicate their experiences. Human consciousness stands at the opposite end of the hierarchy of conscious life forms as the most sophisticated system of which we have direct acquaintance. We contend that it shares the common characteristic of a system capable of opting among alternatives. Because the fundamental property of consciousness is shared by human beings and the constituents of elementary matter in the universe, our model of consciousness can be considered as a modified form of panpsychism.  相似文献

Under the acute influence of alcohol with blood alcohol concentrations (BAK) ranging between 0.62 to 2.04%, the IPL prolongations of our subjects were within standard deviations compared with normal data. Depending on the BAK, these minor IPL alterations hint at a special vulnerability in the pontomesodiencephal area. The increase in BAK significantly correlates with the reduction of body temperature. The BAEP proves to be suitable for defining undear states of coma different origin.  相似文献

Coherent EEG indicators of cognitive binding during ambiguous figure tasks   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
We tested the hypothesis that perception of an alternative image in ambiguous figures would be manifest as high-frequency (gamma) components that become synchronized over multiple scalp sites as a "cognitive binding" process occurs. For 171 combinations of data from 19 electrodes, obtained from 17 subjects and 10 replicate stimuli, we calculated the difference in correlation between the response to first seeing an ambiguous figure and when the alternative percept for that figure became consciously realized (cognitively bound). Numerous statistically significant correlation differences occurred in all frequency bands tested with ambiguous-figure stimulation, but not in two kinds of control data (a reaction-time test to sound stimuli and a no-task, mind-wandering test). Statistically significant correlation changes were widespread, involving frontal, parietal, central, and occipital regions of both hemispheres. Correlation changes were evident at each of five frequency bands, ranging up to 62.5 Hz. Most of the statistically significant correlation changes were not between adjacent sites but between sites relatively distant, both ipsilateral and contralateral. Typically, these correlation changes occurred in more than one frequency band. These results suggest that cognitive binding is a distinct mental state that is reliably induced by ambiguous-figure perception tasks. Coherent oscillations at multiple frequencies may reflect the mechanism by which such binding occurs. Moreover, different coherent frequencies may mediate different components of the total cognitive-binding process.  相似文献

The partitioning of Mn between deformation-induced martensite and austenite phases of a Fe?18Mn?2Al?2Si?0.04C high-Mn steel was studied by tracking variations in the Curie temperature of martensite after exposure to successively higher annealing temperatures. The increase in Curie temperature was justified by the Mn depletion of martensite. Assuming a linear relationship between the Curie temperature and Mn concentration, the average Mn concentration of martensite was expressed as a function of annealing temperature. The proposed method, which is applicable in a dilatometer with inductive heating, enables the ready estimation of Mn partitioning in intercritically annealed medium- and high-Mn steels.  相似文献

In order for theology to have a cognitive dimension, it is necessary to have procedures for testing and critically evaluating theological models. We make use of certain features of scientific models to show how science has been able to move beyond the poles of foundationalism, represented by logical positivism, and antifoundationalism or relativism, represented by the sociologists of knowledge. These ideas are generalized to show that constructing and testing theological models similarly offers a means by which theology can move beyond confessionalism and postmodernism. Our starting point is Paul Tillich's concept of God as the ground of being and the different levels of consciousness and thinking that accompany his understanding of theology. The ontological argument of Anselm is shown to play a key role, not as a proof for the existence of God but as a means for testing theological models. An example of a theological model, drawn from the domain of philosophy of science, is presented to show how theological models are constructed and tested.  相似文献
