Remembrances of parental rejection are associated with loneliness as mediated by psychological maladjustment in young Bangladeshi men but not women

Loneliness is a significant public health issue that affects young adults. This investigation drew from interpersonal acceptance-rejection theory to understand how remembrances of parental rejection contributed to psychological maladjustment and loneliness in Bangladeshi college students (N = 300; 50% female). Students reported their remembrances of mothers' and fathers' acceptance-rejection, their current psychological maladjustment, and loneliness. Remembrances of rejection by parents in childhood were associated with psychological maladjustment (hostility/aggression, negative self-esteem, negative self-adequacy, emotional unresponsiveness, emotional instability, and negative worldview) for young adult men and women. Psychological maladjustment, in turn, was associated with feelings of loneliness in young adulthood for young men, but not women. Remembrances of parental rejection were also associated with greater hostility and aggression over and above general psychological functioning among both men and women. Findings are discussed in the context of different social and structural features of young adulthood for women and men in Bangladesh.     

Existence and Non-existence in Sabzawari’s Ontology

Sabzawari is one of the greatest Muslim philosophers of the nineteenth century. He belongs to Sadrian Existentialism, which became a dominant philosophical tradition during the Qajar dynasty in Iran. This paper critically analyses Sabzawari??s ontological discussion on the dichotomy of existence and quiddity and the relation between existence and non-existence. It argues against Sabzawari by advocating the idea that ??Existence?? rather than quiddity is the ground for identity as well as for diversity, and that non-existence, like existence, is able to produce an effect.     

Impact of Perceived Authentic Leadership and Psychological Capital on Burnout: Mediating Role of Psychological Ownership

The present study is an empirical endeavor of exploring the role of promotive and preventative psychological ownership in the relationship of authentic leadership and psychological capital with burnout. A cross-sectional survey study was conducted among 500 faculty members of various public sector universities of Pakistan (209 male and 291 female teachers). PsyCap Questionnaire, Authentic Leadership Questionnaire, Psychological Ownership Questionnaire, and Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educator Survey were used to measure the focal constructs of the present study. Structured equation modeling reveals that promotive psychological ownership had a negative, whereas preventative psychological ownership had a positive relationship with burnout. Psychological capital and perceived authentic leadership had a negative influence on burnout. Promotive psychological ownership mediated the relationship of psychological capital and authentic leadership with burnout, whereas preventative psychological ownership mediated between perceived authentic leadership and burnout. Implications of the research along with its limitation and suggestions for further research were reflected upon.     

Positive Affect: A Neglected Group Treatment Outcome Measure in Assessing Efficacy of Psychosocial Group Interventions in Individuals with Heart Failure

Positive affect has been neglected in evaluation of group treatment efficacy. This pilot study for individuals with heart failure illustrates the contribution of positive affect to change processes. Assessment of positive affect pre- and post-group intervention can yield a better understanding of individuals' adjustment to heart failure, and provide additional information for selection of specific treatments for each individual. In an era characterized by standardized measures of outcome, inclusion of positive affect provides additional opportunity to document contributions in improving health related quality of life (psychosocial and physical functioning) of clients with heart failure.     

Rorschach Differentials of Homosexuality in Male Convicts: An Examination of Wheeler and Schafer Signs

In an attempt to cross-validate the Wheeler and Schafer signs of homosexuality in the Rorschach, the present study made use of 60 male adult convicts of a Calcutta jail, divided into four equal groups: active homosexual, passive homosexual, sex-role disturbed and heterosexual normals. The protocols of the individually administered Rorschach were examined for both Wheeler and Schafer signs of homosexuality. Statistical analyses revealed that while Wheeler's signs could differentiate only homosexuals (active and passive) and sex-disturbed convicts at .05 level of significance, Schafer's signs were able to differentiate most of the studied groups at level of significance varying between .01 and .05. Failure of the Schafer signs to distinguish between active and passive homosexuals as well as between sex-disturbed and heterosexuals is discussed with reference to the characteristics of prison subculture.     

Moderating Role of Affectivity in Emotional Labor and Emotional Exhaustion Among Customer Services Representatives

The present study proposed a moderating role of affectivity in the relationship between modes of emotional labor and emotional exhaustion among customer services representatives. A sample of 232 customer services representatives from cellular services and banking sectors of Islamabad, Pakistan was purposively chosen for this study. Deep acting and surface acting was measured through Emotional Labor Scale (Brotheridge and Lee Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology 76:365–379, 2003), positive and negative affectivity (NA) was measured through Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (Watson et al. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology 54:1063–1070, 1988), and emotional exhaustion was assessed through Burnout Scale (Erickson and Ritter Social Psychology Quarterly 64(2):146–163, 2001). Hierarchical regression analyses provided empirical support for the proposed model. Negative affectivity (NA) and deep acting significantly predicted emotional exhaustion. Positive affectivity (PA) significantly decreased the likelihood of being emotionally exhausted as a consequence of deep acting whereas negative affectivity (NA) significantly increased the likelihood of being emotionally exhausted as a consequence of surface acting. Finally, customer services representatives of cellular services and women were found to be more prone to emotional exhaustion as compared to their counterparts. Limitations and suggestions for future research have also been discussed.

Quality Choice and Product Differentiation in Monopoly Theory: An Application to the Puritan Church

French engineer and transport economist Jules Dupuit (1804–1866) conjectured more than 150 years ago that, in the context of a three‐part tariff concerning French railroads, a discriminating monopolist will find it most profitable to distort product (service) quality at each of the two ends of the quality spectrum in order to prevent consumers in the middle class (i.e., the second of three classes) from defecting to either end (i.e., first or third class). This study extends a branch of the literature on the economics of religion by arguing that 17th‐century Puritan theologians in colonial America used, in a way that is consistent with Dupuit's insights, Puritan religious doctrines related to eternal salvation and witchcraft to distort the quality, at both ends of the quality spectrum in a three‐part tariff construct, of the religious services they provided to their parishioners. In doing so, we employ economic modeling from seminal studies of the medieval Roman Catholic Church.
