Whether people compete or cooperate with each other has consequences for their own performance and that of organizations. To explain why people compete or cooperate, previous research has focused on two main factors: situational outcome structures and personality types. Here, we propose that—above and beyond these two factors—situational cues, such as the format in which people receive feedback, strongly affect whether they act competitively, cooperatively, or individualistically. Results of a laboratory experiment support our theorizing: After receiving ranking feedback, both students and experienced managers treated group situations with cooperative outcome structures as competitive and were in consequence willing to forgo guaranteed financial gains to pursue a—financially irrelevant—better rank. Conversely, in dilemma situations, feedback based on the joint group outcome led to more cooperation than ranking feedback. Our study contributes to research on competition, cooperation, interdependence theory, forced ranking, and the design of information environments.  相似文献

This paper suggests a method to supplant missing categorical data by reasonable replacements. These replacements will maximize the consistency of the completed data as measured by Guttman's squared correlation ratio. The text outlines a solution of the optimization problem, describes relationships with the relevant psychometric theory, and studies some properties of the method in detail. The main result is that the average correlation should be at least 0.50 before the method becomes practical. Wistar rats (n = 95) were trained in a pole-jumping apparatus (10 trials/session/day) to investigate the involvement of centrally and peripherally released endogenous AVP in their acquisition rate and to examine the feasibility of the microdialysis technique for the administration of peptides during a behavioral test. After session 1, a microdialysis probe was implanted into the septum; during sessions 2 and 3 the probe was perfused with artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) alone or containing either AVP (delivered amount via the probe: 0.2 ng) or the V1 (d(CH2)5Tyr(Me)AVP, 5.0 ng) or the V2/V1 (d(CH2)5-D-Tyr(Et)VAVP, 5.0 ng) antagonist. Administration of AVP via microdialysis into the septum failed to alter the acquisition rate of pole jumping. Also, ip application of both hypertonic saline and the AVP V1 antagonist (10 micrograms) in another experiment failed to show a significant effect upon behavior. Septal administration of the V1 or the V2/V1 antagonist via microdialysis, however, produced a significantly impaired performance. The results indicate that AVP release within the septum is involved in the acquisition of pole-jumping behavior probably mediated by the V1 receptor subtype. An additional involvement of the V2 receptor subtype, however, cannot be entirely excluded. The microdialysis technique proved to be a potent tool to administer substances concomitantly with behavioral tests.  相似文献

Direct care and supervisory staff in five residential training programs for persons with mental retardation in North Dakota rated the acceptability of six staff management procedures. Overall, staff rated “Instructions”, “Instructions and Modeling”, “Feedback and Praise”, and “Instructions, Feedback, and Praise”, as significantly more acceptable than “Self-Management” and “Self-Management, Feedback and Praise”. There was a significant group by treatment interaction in which supervisors and direct care staff had significantly different acceptability rating for four of the six procedures. The results were further analyzed by group and implications and future research are discuessed.  相似文献

The armoury of statistical techniques has recently been enhanced with the multilevel model for longitudinal data. The present article explains the multilevel model for longitudinal data to the statistically non-sophisticated reader. It shows how the model relates to the five rationales of longitudinal research, as they were put forward by Baltes and Nesselroade (1979). In addition, it shows how the model matches Wohlwill's methodology of developmental functions. To elucidate the model further, three applications are given. The applications pertain to the development of children's sleeping duration during the first 18 months of life, the effects of early hospitalization on the daily frequency of crying, and the developmental relationship between social and solitary play.  相似文献
