Prismatic displacement of vision induces transient changes in the timing of eye-hand coordination

Eye-hand coordination was investigated during a task of finger pointing toward visual targets viewed through wedge prisms. Hand and eye latencies and movement times were identical during the control condition and at the end of prism exposure. A temporal reorganization of eye and hand movements was observed during the course of adaptation. During the earlier stage of prism exposure, the time gap between the end of the eye saccade and the onset of hand movement was increased from a control time of 23 to 68 msec. This suggests that a time-consuming process occurred during the early prism-exposure period. The evolution of this time gap was correlated with the evolution of pointing errors during the early stage of prism exposure, in such a way that both measures increased at the onset of prism exposure and decreased almost back to control values within about 10 trials. However, spatial error was not entirely corrected, even late in prism exposure when the temporal organization of eye and hand had returned to baseline. These data suggest that two different adaptive mechanisms were at work: a rather short-term mechanism, involved in normal coordination of spatially aligned eye and hand systems, and a long-term mechanism, responsible for remapping spatially misaligned systems. The former mechanism can be strategically employed to quickly optimize accuracy in a situation involving misalignment, but completely adaptive behavior must await the slower-acting latter mechanism to achieve longterm spatial alignment.

Vocational Personalities and Mindfulness

In the past few decades, many studies have been conducted on the positive effects of mindfulness, a state of openness to novelty in which an individual actively constructs categories and distinctions. The authors tested the applicability of Langer's ( 1989a ) mindfulness theory to Holland's ( 1997 ) vocational personalities. Data from 156 Israeli full‐time employees were collected. The results link different types of vocational personalities to a mindful mind‐set.     

Helping Parents Cope with Suicide Threats: An Approach Based on Nonviolent Resistance

Parent training in nonviolent resistance was adapted to deal with situations of suicide threat by children, adolescents, and young adults. The approach aims at reducing the risk potential and the mutual distress surrounding the threat‐interaction. Parent training in nonviolent resistance has been shown to help parents move from helplessness to presence, from isolation to connectedness, from submission to resistance, from escalation to self‐control, and from mutual distancing and hostility to care and support. Those emphases can be crucial for the diminution of suicide risk. Parents show good ability to implement the approach and report gains on various areas over and beyond the reduction in suicide threat. A particular advantage is that the method can be used also in cases where the young person threatening suicide is not willing to cooperate.     

TO SEE GOD IN HIS BEAUTY: AVRAHAM CHALFI AND THE MYSTICAL QUEST FOR THE EVASIVE GOD

Avraham Chalfi's poetry contains some of the main themes of the mystical experience, namely, the attempt “to see God in his Beauty” and the quest to gain an intimate communion with the Divine.1 I am grateful to the poet Raquel Chalfi for sharing of her memories and insights to her uncle Avraham Chalfi's life and work. The discussions we had contributed to my appreciation of Chalfi's poetry and character. Exploring Chalfi's mystical poems expands our awareness of the theological elements embedded in a variety of modern secular Hebrew poems and their contribution to the evolution and diversification of the canon of Jewish thought.
