Two kinds of radicals: a discriminant analysis of a projective test

Rorschach tests were administered to 36 subjects grouped according to ethnicity and political ideology. Pairwise discriminant analyses of scores significantly differentiated both Jewish and non-Jewish radicals from nonradicals in a manner consistent with previous survey findings.     

Facial expressions modulate the ontogenetic trajectory of gaze-following among monkeys

Gaze-following, the tendency to direct one's attention to locations looked at by others, is a crucial aspect of social cognition in human and nonhuman primates. Whereas the development of gaze-following has been intensely studied in human infants, its early ontogeny in nonhuman primates has received little attention. Combining longitudinal and cross-sectional observational data from Barbary macaques at 'La Forêt des Singes', we show here that gaze-following among conspecifics develops within the first year of life with a rapid increase between 5 and 6 months, reaching adult levels at 1 year. Sex, rank, and relatedness of the animal whose gaze the subject followed did not affect gaze-following rates. Interestingly, however, the behavior was enhanced in all age classes if a gaze-cue was accompanied by a facial expression. Furthermore, the effect of facial expressions had a modulatory influence on the ontogenetic trajectory of gaze-following, suggesting that it is of functional significance in the development of the behavior. Follow-up analyses revealed that one specific facial expression that is given in response to social interactions between third parties was particularly efficient in eliciting gaze-following responses, indicating the importance of cues that are able to guide the acquisition of social information. Taken together, these results suggest that the development and the operation of gaze-following are tuned to the social and physical characteristics of a species' environment.     

Common-sense models of illness: the example of hypertension

Our premise was that actions taken to reduce health risks are guided by the actor's subjective or common-sense constructions of the health threat. We hypothesized that illness threats are represented by their labels and symptoms (their identity), their causes, consequences, and duration. These attributes are represented at two levels: as concrete, immediately perceptible events and as abstract ideas. Both levels guide coping behavior. We interviewed 230 patients about hypertension, presumably an asymptomatic condition. When asked if they could monitor blood pressure changes, 46% of 50 nonhypertensive, clinic control cases said yes, as did 71% of 65 patients new to treatment, 92% of 50 patients in continuing treatment, and 94% of 65 re-entry patients, who had previously quit and returned to treatment. Patients in the continuing treatment group, who believed the treatment had beneficial effects upon their symptoms, reported complying with medication and were more likely to have their blood pressure controlled. Patients new to treatment were likely to drop out of treatment if: they had reported symptoms to the practitioner at the first treatment session, or they construed the disease and treatment to be acute. The data suggest that patients develop implicit models or beliefs about disease threats, which guide their treatment behavior, and that the initially most common model of high blood pressure is based on prior acute, symptomatic conditions.     

Democracy & democratic education

A profound problem posed by education for any pluralistic society with democratic aspirations is how to reconcile individual freedom and civic virtue. Children cannot be educated to maximize both individual freedom and civic virtue. Yet reasonable people value and intermittently demand both. We value freedom of speech and press, for example, but want (other) people to refrain from false and socially harmful expression. The various tensions between individual freedom and civic virtue pose a challenge that is simultaneously philosophical and political. How can we resolve the tensions philosophically in light of reasonable political disagreements over the relative value of individual freedom and civic virtue? Instead of giving priority to one value or the other, this essay defends a democratic ideal ofconscious social reproduction, which consists of three principles:nonrepression, nondiscrimination, and democratic deliberation.     

Minicomputer processing of dual Purkinje image eye-tracker data

Eye movement data analysis often entails reliable detection of the onset of saccades. Saccades are most easily separated from fixations on the basis of movement velocity and acceleration. Convolution integers are used to estimate the velocity and acceleration of eye movements, and these serve as the basis of an eye movement data-classification program. The technique of derivative estimation by convolution integers has the advantage of being easily calculated and the disadvantage of returning results shifted in phase. The disadvantage is overcome by using ring buffers for the synchronization of data and results.     

Governing [through] Autonomy. The Moral and Legal Limits of “Soft Paternalism”

Legal restrictions of the right to self-determination increasingly pretend to be compatible with the liberal concept of autonomy: they act upon a ‘soft’ or autonomy-orientated paternalistic rationale. Conventional liberal critique of paternalism turns out to be insensitive to the intricate normative problems following from ‘soft’ or ‘libertarian’ paternalism. In fact, these autonomy-oriented forms of paternalism could actually be even more problematic and may infringe liberty rights even more intensely than hard paternalistic regulation. This paper contributes to the systematic differentiation of soft and hard paternalism by discussing the (legal) concept of autonomy and elaborates the moral and legal limits of autonomy-orientated paternalism.
