Biases in judgement of ambiguous stimuli, as measured in a judgement bias task, have been proposed as a measure of the valence of affective states in animals. We recently suggested a list of criteria for behavioural tests of emotion, one of them stating that responses on the task used to assess emotionality should not be confounded by, among others, differences in learning capacity, i.e. must not simply reflect the cognitive capacity of an animal. We performed three independent studies in which pigs acquired a spatial holeboard task, a free choice maze which simultaneously assesses working memory and reference memory. Next, pigs learned a conditional discrimination between auditory stimuli predicting a large or small reward, a prerequisite for assessment of judgement bias. Once pigs had acquired the conditional discrimination task, optimistic responses to previously unheard ambiguous stimuli were measured in the judgement bias task as choices indicating expectation of the large reward. We found that optimism in the judgement bias task was independent of all three measures of learning and memory indicating that the performance is not dependent on the pig’s cognitive abilities. These results support the use of biases in judgement as proxy indicators of emotional valence in animals. 相似文献

This study set out to examine native Dutch adolescents' tolerance (N = 1,139) of Muslim immigrants in relation to the endorsement of assimilation, national identification, and contact with ethnic minority peers. The focus was on two dimensions of tolerance: the acceptance of practices by Muslim actors, and Muslims persuading co‐believers to engage in the same practices. Tolerance was found to be higher for the practices than for persuading others. Higher endorsement of assimilation was related to lower levels of tolerance, and this relation was stronger for higher compared to lower national identifiers. Assimilation mediated the positive relationship between intergroup contact and tolerance. These effects did not differ for the two dimensions of tolerance. The implications of these findings are discussed. 相似文献

In recent years, there has been a surge of interest in (mini) pigs (Sus scrofa) as species for cognitive research. A major reason for this is their physiological and anatomical similarity with humans.
For example, pigs possess a well-developed, large brain. Assessment of the learning and memory functions of pigs is not only
relevant to human research but also to animal welfare, given the nature of current farming practices and the demands they
make on animal health and behavior. In this article, we review studies of pig cognition, focusing on the underlying processes
and mechanisms, with a view to identifying. Our goal is to aid the selection of appropriate cognitive tasks for research into
pig cognition. To this end, we formulated several basic criteria for pig cognition tests and then applied these criteria and
knowledge about pig-specific sensorimotor abilities and behavior to evaluate the merits, drawbacks, and limitations of the
different types of tests used to date. While behavioral studies using (mini) pigs have shown that this species can perform
learning and memory tasks, and much has been learned about pig cognition, results have not been replicated or proven replicable
because of the lack of validated, translational behavioral paradigms that are specially suited to tap specific aspects of
pig cognition. We identified several promising types of tasks for use in studies of pig cognition, such as versatile spatial
free-choice type tasks that allow the simultaneous measurement of several behavioral domains. The use of appropriate tasks
will facilitate the collection of reliable and valid data on pig cognition. 相似文献
