Job Satisfaction Among Type C Career Changers

Type C careerists perceive their second occupations as being more intrinsically, extrinsically, and generally satisfying than they did their initial occupations.     

A Lawyer in the Counseling Center

Today's college students are finding an increasing need for legal information. At California State College, Los Angeles, a lawyer from the community was retained by the college counseling center to consult with students who had legal questions. During the academic year 1968-69, 302 students took advantage of this service. Although most of their questions dealt with selective service, other areas of concern included landlord-tenant matters, domestic relations, and criminal and civil law. Student reactions were sampled by means of a questionnaire. The general response was highly favorable, thus supporting the need for a legal counseling service on the college campus.     

Web‐Assisted Career Counseling

For the past 20 years counselors have used computer‐based career information systems to assist clients with career planning and job hunting. Much of the same this information is now available on the Internet and can be accessed without the aid of a counselor. Such developments are likely to have a major impact on employment counseling practices. This article outlines selected Web‐assisted counseling issues that are likely to affect counselors over the next few years and summarizes the career services currently available on the World Wide Web.     

Employee Attitudes Toward an Internal Employee Assistance Program

To assess attitudes toward the effectiveness of an employee assistance program (EAP), a survey was sent to a random sample of 16,603 employees and adult dependents of a large, multinational company. Four groups were surveyed: employees who had used the EAP, adult dependents who had used the EAP, employees who had not used the EAP, and adult dependents who had not used the EAP. The findings indicated that both employee and adult dependent EAP users viewed the EAP more positively than did employee and adult dependent nonusers. Regression analyses indicated that factors including perception of EAP confidentiality, perceived support by other employees, and belief that the EAP would not negatively affect the career were related to positive views of the EAP among both EAP users and nonusers.     

Uncertainties about the new Strong Interest Blanks

Many SVIB materials were published in 1969, and the new men's and women's revisions are now largely complete. Because these inventories are such fundamental instruments for vocational counseling, the revisions merit careful examination at this point. Consideration is given to necessary technical information, the Basic Interest Scales, new occupational scale reference groups, scale development and validation, an illustrative scale, and other factors. Because the SVIB's are more complex than ever, and involve uncertainties yet to be resolved, they need to be approached with caution.     

Using Student Paraprofessionals in the Treatment of Eating Disorders

A rationale for adjunctive treatment in responding to eating disorder clients at a university counseling center is presented. The program described provides a highly structured internship experience for paraprofessional psychology trainees who serve as therapeutic aides and peer counselors to eating disorder clients. This collaborative Counseling Center and Psychology Department model emphasizes intern training, close supervision, and professional-paraprofessional cotreatment of anorexic and bulimic clients. Program evaluation methods and therapy outcome data are presented. Advantages of this treatment-training program for all participants are discussed.
