The influences of sex, age, and conversational, partner (mother vs. stranger) on eye contact during verbalizations were examined in a longitudinal study of 33 children at 2 and 4 years of age. A free-play sample was obtained of each child interacting with mother and with a male or female experimenter. The amount of eye contact in conjunction with verbalization was analyzed. Significant main effects were found for sex (females engaged in a higher percent of eye contact than males) and conversational partner (more eye contact while speaking exhibited to experimenter than to mother). There was an interaction between age and conversational partner, in that mother received more and experimenter relatively less percent of eye contact during verbalizations as children got older. Notably, there was no main effect for age. These results revealed sex differences at an age (2–2 1/2 years) and in a context (free-play setting) not previously studied, demonstrating the robustness of the effect. Further, age findings seem indicative of unique developmental trends for eye contact during verbalizations for the ages between 2 and 4 years.Mount Saint Vicent University  相似文献

This study indicates that sales volume, stage in the product life cycle, profitability and turnover are all important predictors of the method and magnitude of financial rewards provided by high tech firms to R and D employees. The most favorable situational factors for R and D incentive compensation are a low sales volume high tech company, operating in the growth stage of the product life cycle, with high turnover rates, and capable of linking profitability to incentive rewards such as bonuses.  相似文献

Six pigeons were instrumentally trained to discriminate between two displays that differed only by the presence of a distinctive feature on the positive or food-correlated display. In accordance with previous studies, subjects learned the discrimination and, in the presence of the positive display, directed most of their responses to the distinctive feature, although responses to the common feature were also reinforced. Subsequent generalization tests revealed that on the positive display, both common and distinctive features produced decremental gradients, contradicting Farthing's (1971) statement that the common feature acquires a control function opposite that of the distinctive feature. Procedural differences probably caused the discrepancy in results; within a display, Farthing presented common and distinctive features successively; the present study used simultaneous presentations of common and distinctive stimuli.  相似文献

Women's and men's understanding of the certainty expressed in mental and modal terms was examined. Subjects were asked to decide on the location of a hidden object when the only clue available was coded in the mental or modal term used in two conflicting assertions made by a male and female experimenter, each specifying a different location. Results showed that both women and men discriminated the degree of certainty expressed in 11 of 12 pairs of terms presented. Gender differences existed in the understanding of terms which were close in pragmatic meaning, with females making the distinctions more equivocally than males. The gender of the speaker had no influence on subjects' responses to contrasts which differentiated certainty, but on the contrast in which no preference for a term was found, subjects chose the location indicated by the male experimenter significantly more often. This study highlights a point of difference in pragmatic understanding between women and men and invites explorations of its origin.This research was supported by grant 410-89-0352 from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to both authors. Groups of pigeons were trained to depress a treadle in the presence of a compound stimulus consisting of a tone and a red houselight (a) to avoid electric shock, or (b) to obtain grain. Immediate, exteroceptive feedback was equated for avoidance and appetitive groups within an experiment, but varied across experiments from elevation of a nonilluminated feeder to darkening of the chamber, termination of the tone, and elevation of an illuminated feeder. Responding in the absence of the compound stimulus postponed its next occurrence. After performance had stabilized, the degree to which each element controlled treadle pressing was determined. Generally, in the appetitive tests, the red light controlled much more responding than did the tone, but in the avoidance tests, the tone controlled more responding than did the red light.  相似文献

Although existing literature demonstrates that developmental benefits are associated with religion for adolescents, little is understood about the dynamics of this relationship. Drawing on social capital theory, this study tested a conceptual model exploring socially embedded religious influences on moral outcomes. A three-dimensional model of social capital demonstrated how social interaction, trust, and shared vision enable social ties associated with religiousness to influence moral behavior. Structural equation modeling was used with data gathered from 735 urban youths to test a proposed model of the effects of religiousness on moral outcomes. Results suggested that religiously active youths report higher levels of social capital resources and that the influence of adolescent religiousness on moral outcomes was mediated through social capital resources. Suggestions for further research and implications for faith-based youth development organizations are considered.  相似文献

Nye's (1998) core construct of relational consciousness in child spirituality embraces a wider dialogue with social and personality psychology. Relatedness in spirituality implies the importance of language, mind, and the self as guideposts for development. In this research we seek to qualitatively expand our understanding of relational consciousness around recent work in these three domains. Twelve school-age children are given detailed interviews dealing with spirituality framed by the relational consciousness core construct. Transcribed responses are analysed using grounded theory methodology. Theoretical categories are assembled into a preliminary framework for relational consciousness as a social and contextual phenomenon. The relationships between categories in the framework are outlined in terms of mental representation and self/other orientation in the child. We conclude that relational consciousness and its social framework commends a pedocentric, community-based approach to religious education.  相似文献
