Abstract

The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the intraocular pressure (IOP) responses in myopes and normally-sighted controls differ when the subjects are exposed to a short-term achievement related stressor. A second aim was to examine to what extent IOP would decrease through relaxation in myopes as compared with the controls. Nineteen short-sighted and 19 normally-sighted adults were subjected to four conditions: (1) baseline I, (2) arithmetical mental operations under time pressure and noise, (3) baseline II, and (4) relaxation. IOP was assessed before and after each experimental condition. Heart rate was measured, and subjective ratings were obtained regarding the level of stress and relaxation subjects experienced. The stressing achievement situation led to significant increases in IOP and to significantly higher increases in myopes than in controls. Relaxation led to significant decreases of IOP in both groups. Heart rate and subjective ratings did not differ between groups under any condition. The present results point to specific intraocular reaction patterns to stress in myopic persons. The potential impact of this finding for a behavioral approach to shortsightedness is high since IOP is considered one of the main variables in the development of myopia.  相似文献

This study explored the potential of a person × situation approach to identifying the characteristics of leaders in a voluntary community organization. A set of variables based on Mischel's “cognitive social learning variables” was operationalized to provide variables which assess the characteristics of individuals in relation to the specific context in which some emerge as leaders. This set of variables was compared with a larger set of traditional demographic and personality variables. Analyses indicated the approximate statistical comparability of the two sets. Advantages of the cognitive social learning approach for understanding and intervening in leader emergence and development in voluntary community organizations are discussed.  相似文献

Community coalitions address a wide variety of community problems, espousing a community development processes that promotes individual and collective self-determination. They offer a promising venue for the study of empowerment of individuals and organizations. This study utilizes data from members of 35 community coalitions organized for the prevention of alcohol and other drug problems to address the following questions: What individual characteristics are related to the psychological empowerment of coalition members? What organizational characteristics are related to the collective empowering of members? What organization characteristics are related to a coalition being organizationally empowered to succeed in achieving its objectives? At the individual level, psychological empowerment was most strongly related to individuals' participation levels, sense of community, and perceptions of a positive organizational climate. At the group level, the strongest predictors of collective empowering (our operationalization of the empowering organization) were net benefits of participation, commitment, and positive organization climate. Psychological empowerment and positive organizational climate were the two predictors of organizational effectiveness (the empowered organization). Implications and limitations of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

People often talk to themselves using the first‐person pronoun (I), but they also talk to themselves as if they are speaking to someone else, using the second‐person pronoun (You). Yet, the relative behavioral control achieved by I and You self‐talk remains unknown. The current research was designed to examine the potential behavioral advantage of using You in self‐talk and the role of attitudes in this process. Three experiments compared the effects of I and You self‐talk on problem solving performance and behavioral intentions. Experiment 1 revealed that giving self‐advice about a hypothetical social situation using You yielded better anagram task performance than using I. Experiment 2 showed that using You self‐talk in preparation for an anagram task enhanced anagram performance and intentions to work on anagrams more than I self‐talk, and that these effects were mediated by participants' attitudes toward the task. Experiment 3 extended these findings to exercise intentions and highlighted the role of attitudes in this effect. Altogether, the current research showed that second‐person self‐talk strengthens both actual behavior performance and prospective behavioral intentions more than first‐person self‐talk.
