In this study, we examined the effect of within-category diversity on people's ability to learn perceptual categories, their inclination to generalize categories to novel items, and their ability to distinguish new items from old. After learning to distinguish a control category from an experimental category that was either clustered or diverse, participants performed a test of category generalization or old-new recognition. Diversity made learning more difficult, increased generalization to novel items outside the range of training items, and made it difficult to distinguish such novel items from familiar ones. Regression analyses using the generalized context model suggested that the results could be explained in terms of similarities between old and new items combined with a rescaling of the similarity space that varied according to the diversity of the training items. Participants who learned the diverse category were less sensitive to psychological distance than were the participants who learned a more clustered category.  相似文献

This study compared the influence of HIV risk behaviors and condom use attitudes on condom use among heterosexual African American males. Three models were tested: (a) HIV risk, (b) condom use attitudes, and (c) a model combining the previous two. Brief street intercept interviews were administered to African American males in 2 matched pairs of census tracts. Results are based on 589 males reporting vaginal sex in the last 30 days. The General Linear Test (GLT) was used to test the ability of regression models to reduce error variance. The condom use, attitude model was sufficient to predict frequency of condom use regardless of partner type. The strongest predictors of condom use were condom use enjoyment, social norms, self-efficacy, and social influence.  相似文献

This article responds to the challenge to ‘unpack’ the ‘slogan’ of fait/learning integration. It discusses three ways by which the topic may be approached in academic discourse. These include institution building, the deconstruction of dichotomies and dualities, and the integration of creed and deed. While our discussion in regards to institution building and the integration of creed and deed constitutes an extension of current constructs, we advance the notion of the deconstruction of dichotomies and dualities as a new approach to the faith/learning integration theme.  相似文献

The general thesis of this paper is that interactional variables are the most promising way to forecast the results of psychological treatment. In particular we believe that perceived group climate dimensions early in group psychotherapy might be valuable predictors. The group atmosphere–climate dimensions, cohesion and relationship, were significant predictors of positive goal attainment and/or symptom reduction (affiliation, involvement–engagement) and so was the subscale, submission–conformity. In addition, the dimensions avoidance and anxiety were negatively correlated with the same outcome indexes. A multiple linear regression analysis suggests, however, that these significant predictions reflect the pretherapy levels of therapy projects–targets and symptoms to be reduced. This study is so promising that group therapy researchers and clinicians are recommended to exploit group climate dimensions to predict outcome.  相似文献

The majority of previous studies on life satisfaction and health status were conducted in the advanced developed countries, while less attention has been focused on transitional countries, especially those in Central Asia, the Caucasus, and the Balkans. This study is among a very few studies that focused on the regions which faced on the prolonged economic and political crisis during the transition. Drawing on comparable data from 28 transitional countries in Eastern and Central Europe, the Caucasus, the Central Asia, and Turkey, we quantify the effect of self-reported life satisfaction on the self-reported health status of the population. To rule out reverse causality and to reduce estimation biases, we employed simultaneous equation models with instrumental variables. Two models used standard simultaneous equation regression (2SLS) and bivariate ordered probit regression (bioprobit) for categorical ordered variables. Our main finding is that, regardless of the model used, higher levels of life satisfaction determine higher health status. The mechanisms regarding the effects of life satisfaction on health are discussed. Future researchers are encouraged to include life satisfaction in their analyses of health status. From a methodological standpoint, we demonstrate that a strong endogeneity exists between life satisfaction and health status, regardless of the models used. Ignoring endogeneity and estimating a single stage regression model with life satisfaction and health status will likely lead to biased results.  相似文献
