Five-year-old children were tested for perceptual trading relations between a temporal cue (silence duration) and a spectral cue (F1 onset frequency) for the “say-stay” distinction. Identification functions were obtained for two synthetic “say-stay” continua, each containing systematic variations in the amount of silence following the /s/ noise. In one continuum, the vocalic portion had a lower F1 onset than in the other continuum. Children showed a smaller trading relation than has been found with adults. They did not differ from adults, however, in their perception of an “ay-day” continuum formed by varying F1 onset frequency only. The results of a discrimination task in which the two acoustic cues were made to “cooperate” or “conflict” phonetically supported the notion of perceptual equivalence of the temporal and spectral cues along a single phonetic dimension. The results indicate that young children, like adults, perceptually integrate multiple cues to a speech contrast in a phonetically relevant manner, but that they may not give the same perceptual weights to the various cues as do adults.  相似文献

A review indicates that (a) comparatively little is known about the common phenomenon of lifelong mild bad feelings, and (b) psychotherapy has generally overlooked an effective focus on this enigmatic feeling state. As an invitation for clinicians to provide more attention to this feeling state, a proposal is suggested toward one way of freeing a patient of lifelong mild bad feelings in the course of a session.  相似文献

The evaluation of the effectiveness of PLATO CAI in both educational and industrial settings is discussed. The evaluation of the PLATO instruction in the educational setting generally supports the effectiveness of PLATO instruction but was hampered by limited control of instructional method for different populations of students. Further difficulties in evaluation were caused by ceiling effects in the measurement instrument. Evaluation of PLATO instruction in the consulting setting was hampered by lack of cooperation by the client institution. Mastery of the content of some areas covered by the PLATO lessons in this setting was high, whereas mastery of other content areas was low. Conclusions address the necessity for at least a minimal amount of cooperation from the client institution and a minimal amount of control of the evaluation setting for adequate evaluation of any CAI instructional method.  相似文献

The goal of our study was to localize the source of the stronger Stroop interference effect found in morphosyllabic readers as compared with alphabetic readers. Twenty-three Chinese and 24 German undergraduate students were tested in a Stroop paradigm with the following stimuli: color patches, colorneutral words (e.g.,friend printed in yellow), incongruent color-associated words (e.g.,blood printed in blue), and incongruent color words (e.g.,yellow printed in blue). Results revealed no differences in German and Chinese students’ response times to color patches. Chinese participants, however, showed longer color naming latencies for neutral words as well as for color words and color-related words. No differences between German and Chinese participants were found when print color latencies for neutral words were subtracted from print color latencies for color words and color-related words. This result does not support theories which suggest that for morphosyllabic readers there is a direct route from orthography to the semantics of a word. We rather argue, with reference to dual route models of reading, that access from print to phonology is faster for morphosyllabic than for alphabetic readers, and therefore interference caused by conflicting phonologies of color name and written word will be stronger in Chinese readers than in German readers.  相似文献
