Separation‐Individuation,Adult Attachment Style,and College Adjustment

The authors examined the relationship between separation‐individuation, adult attachment styles, and college adjustment. One hundred fifty‐six young adults completed the Psychological Separation Inventory (J. A. Hoffman, 1984; J. A. Hoffman & B. Weiss, 1987), 2 subscales from the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (R. W. Baker & B. Siryk, 1989), a measure of pathology of separation‐individuation (R. M. Christenson & W. P. Wilson, 1985), and assessments of adult attachment style (K. Bartholomew & L. Horowitz, 1991). College adjustment was positively associated with secure adult attachment and counterindicated by fearful and preoccupied attachments. Implications for counseling practice and directions for future research are discussed.     

The method of minimum variation for the combination of criteria

The problem of weighting separate criterion variates is solved by minimizing the differences among the standard scores of the individual upon the various measures. The method is compared with Horst's procedure of maximizing the inter-individual differences. An application is made to personnel data.This technique was developed in connection with a study of the prediction of success of salespersons, which is being carried on by the Occupational Research Program of the United States Employment Service.

A table to facilitate the computation of Fisher'st function for the comparison of two means is presented. The derivations leading to the construction of the table, and the necessary instructions for its use, are given.     

Test scores examined with the lexis ratio

The Lexis Ratio is discussed in its application to distributions of test scores where the items of the test can be assumed to be of equal difficulty. The ratio indicates the extent to which inter-individual variation operates as a source of the variance. The concept is related to the Lexis, Bernoulli, and Poisson distributions and illustrated by urn schemata. The Ratio is applied to the scores of 560 university freshmen on theRobinson Reading Test. The relation of the Lexis Ratio to the Kuder-Richardson estimation of reliability is also discussed and the latter authors' case IV is rewritten explicitly in terms of the Ratio.
