The Dual Career Couple: Concerns,Benefits, and Counseling Implications

A comprehensive conceptualization of concerns and benefits experienced by dual career couples is presented. Counseling implications are provided to address the concerns. Counselors are asked to expand their roles to help couples challenge unquestioned societal values and practices and uniquely define their own standards for success in career and family roles.     

Promoting Equality for Women Seminarians

Hardesty (1974) theorized that women seminarians go through four stages in their relationship with their seminaries. The purpose of this study was to empirically investigate Hardesty's model and to provide information on counseling and consulting needs of women seminarians.     

Positioning Subjects and Objects: Agency,Narration, Relationality

When assumed by positions of dominance, the impersonal, analytical perspectives of scholar-narrators may serve to flatten, simplify, or render invisible the differences of constructed Others. Strategies of resistance necessarily correspond to where narrator-subjects enter relations of power. Without the presence of Others’ narrations, dominance can neither value newly visible subjective agency nor confront the complicity in its own subjectivity. Intersubjectivity suggests a dialogical process that utilizes differences in lived experience to reconceive relationality.     

Counseling Depressed Female Religious Professionals: Nuns and Clergywomen

Stress, strain, depression, and coping resources in nuns and clergywomen were studied to better understand women religious professionals and to thus provide more appropriate counseling for them. Responses of 254 well-matched female religious professionals were analyzed with t tests and ANOV As. Nuns had less stress (perceived pressure) and strain (actual wear and tear), less depression, and better coping resources than clergywomen. Female Reform rabbis experienced the most stress, strain, and possible depression, with the lowest coping resources. Yet, traditionalism in women's role within ecclesia does not explain why nuns are becoming more activist and feminist and leaving orders in growing numbers. Perhaps clergywomen are in a serious battle for the survival of female religious professionals and experiencing stress, strain, and depression on the road to victory over prejudice and injustice toward female believers.     

Termination: Analytic Reflections on Client Contact After Counselor Relocation

Client post-termination contact with counselors who have relocated has been neglected as a training and practice issue. The client may attempt to re-open the therapeutic relationship, even though the counselor has moved to a different geographical location and is not available to continue service delivery. In this article, analytic reflections are used to explore counselor, client, and process variables relative to counselors' response to “following” clients.     

Work Values: How Do Managers Who Change Jobs Differ From Those Who Do Not?

The work values of 166 male and female managers who voluntarily left the employ of a large Canadian corporation were compared with those of 298 who stayed with the company.     

The Abductivist Reply to Skepticism

Abductivists claim that explanatory considerations (e.g., simplicity, parsimony, explanatory breadth, etc.) favor belief in the external world over skeptical hypotheses involving evil demons and brains in vats. After showing how most versions of abductivism succumb fairly easily to obvious and fatal objections, I explain how rationalist versions of abductivism can avoid these difficulties. I then discuss the most pressing challenges facing abductivist appeals to the a priori and offer suggestions on how to overcome them.
