Social anxiety and fear of bodily sensations in panic disorder and agoraphobia: A matched comparison

This study tests the hypothesis that social anxiety and fear of bodily sensations are associated with the development of agoraphobic avoidance behavior in panic disorder patients. Twenty patients with panic disorder were compared to 20 patients with panic disorder with agoraphobia, matched by sex and duration of disorder. The two groups did not differ on measures of fear and frequency of assertive social responses. However, the agoraphobics scored higher on measures of interpersonal sensitivity, depression, feelings of inadequacy, and hostility. They also reported higher fear of bodily sensations. Although definitive conclusions need to be postponed until prospective studies have been conducted, there is evidence suggesting that the development of agoraphobia in panic patients is associated with hypersensitivity to bodily sensations and interpersonal situations.This research was supported by Grant 560-268-009 of the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research.     

Evidence for the involvement of brain GABA and serotonin systems in the anticonflict effects of chlordiazepoxide in rats

Using male hooded Lister rats the effects of GABAergic and serotonergic treatments alone and with chlordiazepoxide (CDP) were compared with the behavioral effects of CDP in a conditioned conflict procedure with three components; Reward, Time Out, and Conflict. CDP (2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 mg/kg ip) dose- relatedly increased punished and time out responding, but increased rewarded responding in an inversely dose-related manner. Punished responding was enhanced by chronic treatment to a rate which remained stable between 9 and 19 injections. The GABA transaminase inhibitor ethanolamine-O-sulfate (EOS), given chronically in drinking water (5.0 mg/ml), increased punished responding linearly to a high stable level after 2-3 weeks. Rewarded and time out responding were less substantially increased. CDP given with EOS dose- relatedly increased time out and punished responding substantially above the rates found with either treatment alone. The GABA antagonist picrotoxin blocked the increase in punished and time out responding found with EOS and CDP alone. The tryptophan hydroxylase inhibitor p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA; 100 mg/kg x 3) linearly increased punished responding for the first week of treatment. CDP with PCPA selectively and significantly increased punished responding above the rates for either treatment alone, but the increases were not as substantial as those with EOS + CDP. The serotonin reuptake inhibitor Wy 25093 reduced increases in time out and punished responding under CDP, and the precursor 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) counteracted increases in punished responding under PCPA but also substantially reduced rewarded responding. These results provide evidence that both increased GABA and decreased serotonin transmission are involved in the anticonflict effects of CDP, as EOS and PCPA both mimicked and potentiated effects of CDP, while picrotoxin, Wy 25093, and 5-HTP counteracted them.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)     

Attitude change following persuasive communication: Integrating Social Judgment Theory and the Elaboration Likelihood Model

An experiment was conducted to examine the influence of the perceived extremity of a message and motivation to elaborate upon the process of persuasion. The first goal was to test a model of attitude change relating Social Judgment Theory to the Elaboration Likelihood Model. The second objective was to develop an instrument to measure attitude structure (latitudes of acceptance, non-commitment, and rejection) that allowed for a more refined assessment of the discrepancy between the position advocated in a message and the recipient's initial attitude. The main dependent variable was the attitude towards the use of automobiles in relation to environmental issues. Subjects were confronted with a message located in their own latitude of acceptance, rejection or non-commitment. Shortly after, a second measurement of attitude took place. The results showed that messages within the latitudes of non-commitment gave rise to the greatest attitude change. The data support the susceptibility hypothesis that subjects elaborate messages mainly in the latitude of non-commitment.     

Christian‐Muslim relations: Some current themes

The recent writings dealing with Christianity and Islam, written for very different audiences, point to some common current themes in Christian‐Muslim relations. Taking Bill Musk and Ziauddin Sardar as starting points, the article discusses the importance of secularism, mutual mistrust and the efficacy of religious faith to deal with contemporary problems as major concerns which must be addressed in any meaningful dialogue between Christianity and Islam today.     

The dispositional shift in attribution over time

Two experiments examined the effect of time on causal attributions. In Experiment I, subjects who described themselves into a tape recorder assumed more personal responsibility for their behavior after 3 weeks' time than others who explained their behavior immediately after its occurrence. In Experiment II, actor-subjects took part in a getting acquainted conversation and explained their behavior more dispositionally and less situationally after 3 weeks' time than they had initially, while observer-subjects experienced no change over time. Results were interpreted in terms of an altered self-perspective in memory and the diminished salience of situational details over time.     

Training Counselors for Special Education

Through a one-year internship, counselors develop attitudes and competencies needed to promote the career development of handicapped high school students. This new specialty in the counseling field, although it incorporates elements of rehabilitation, school, and vocational counseling, occurs within the framework of special education classes in regular high schools, and therefore is markedly different from any existing specialty. The role model developed in this project, now in its fifth year, stresses outreach, planning, and an active part for the counselor. This approach has been found effective both with handicapped and with learning disabled students in several urban schools.
