“Celebrities to lean on!” Perceived celebrity support across two cultures—Iran and the United States

Though many people loathe celebrities and their lifestyles, celebrities can also be perceived as being available to provide community support. The purpose of this study was to establish the psychometric properties of the Perceived Celebrity Support Inventory. The scale was developed to capture three aspects of perceived celebrity support to the community: instrumental (i.e., providing tangible and concrete assistance), informational (i.e., advice, explanation, and information), and emotional (i.e., empathizing, encouraging, listening, and comforting) support. Factor and item analyses have revealed robust psychometric properties in samples drawn from the United States (US) and Iran. The US sample perceived higher community support from celebrities than the Iranian sample. In the Iranian sample, perceived celebrity support for the community was associated with more positive attitudes and less hatred of celebrity culture. In the US, perceived celebrity support was associated with negative attitudes and elevated hatred towards celebrities. The findings advance the literature by providing an instrument with which to measure positive aspects of celebrity influence across cultures. 相似文献

We studied the pattern of performance in elementary school children and adults detecting a target in compound geometric shapes. The target was randomly presented at the global, local, or neither level of compound shapes with different elemental density. A significant difference between the pattern of performance in children and adults emerged when the geometric shape was constructed with fewer constituent parts. That is, children showed difficulties in recognizing the global level while adults could efficiently process it. We suggest that global processing continues to develop as children grow older. Also, integration ability could benefit from increasing familiarity with the geometric concepts. 相似文献

We examined the effect of induced mood, varying in valence and longevity, on
local processing of emotional faces. It was found that negative facial
expression conveyed by the global level of the face interferes with efficient
processing of the local features. The results also showed that the duration of
involvement with a mood influenced the local processing. We observed that
attending to the local level of faces is not different in short-lived happy and
sad mood states. However, as the mood state is experienced for a longer period,
local processing was impaired in happy mood compared to sad mood. Taken
together, we concluded that both facial expressions and affective states
influence processing of the local parts of faces. Moreover, we suggest that
mediating factors like the duration of involvement with the mood play a role in
the interrelation between mood, attention, and perception. 相似文献
