This study tested Rusbult’s (1980, 1983) investment model of relationship commitment and stability using data from both partners
of 3,627 married couples. As pre-dicted, spouses’ satisfaction, investments, and quality of alternatives were unique predictors
of their commitment to the marital relationship. Additionally, commitment assessed at the initial testing predicted marital
termination or stability 18 months later. Multiple-group path analyses showed that the investment model provided an adequate
fit to the data and that the associations among variables were similar for husbands and wives. Limitations of the model as
well as directions for future research are consid-ered.
This research used the American Couples, 1975-1978, data set [made accessible in 1992, computer data]. These data were collected
by Philip Blumstein and Pepper Schwartz and are available through the archive of the Henry A. Murray Research Center of Radcliffe
College, Cambridge, Massachusetts (Producer and Distributor). This paper is based on work supported under a National Science
Foundation Graduate Fellowship awarded to Emily A. Impett and a UCLA Academic Senate Research Grant to Letitia Anne Peplau.

Conclusion We have illustrated how our small theory (Lipsey, 1990) of bereavement guided the development and evaluation of a preventive intervention for bereaved children. Our small theory, based on prior empirical research, enabled us to identify family processes that appeared to mediate the effects of parental death on child mental health. Our intervention was designed to attempt to change these processes. The evaluation of our experimental trial of the intervention assessed changes on these processes as well as the more distal mental health outcomes. The experimental trial showed some-what encouraging results, in terms of the program's ability to modify the warmth of the parent–child relationship and to decrease symptomatology in the adolescent children. We also obtained further empirical support for our underlying theoretical model. Finally, implications for redesign of the program were derived from assessing the adequacy of the program components to change each of the mediators in the theoretical model.Support for this research was provided by NIMH grant P5OMH39246 which is gratefully acknowledged. Using Problem-Behavior Theory as a framework, the latent structure of problem and positive behaviors was examined within a sample of 1,894 American Indian adolescents. Support was found for a two-factor second-order structure in which problem behaviors (antisocial behavior, alcohol use, drug use, and risky sexual behavior) and positive behaviors (school success, cultural activities, competencies, and community-mindedness) represented two relatively uncorrelated aspects of behavior. Hierarchical multiple regressions demonstrated that the positive behaviors construct contributed significant incremental construct validity in the statistical prediction of psychosocial outcomes, over and above the problem behaviors. In addition, the fit of the structure was examined across gender and the four participating communities. The importance of the inclusion of positive behaviors is discussed from the standpoint of both prevention/promotion activities and the communities' perceptions. Further recommendations are made for deeper understandings of community concerns and strengths in conducting preventive/promotive research efforts. 相似文献

Spirituality measures often show positive associations with preferred mental health outcomes in the general population; however, research among American Indians (AIs) is limited. We examined the relationships of mental health status and two measures of spirituality – the Midlife Development Inventory (MIDI) and a tribal cultural spirituality measure – in Northern Plains AIs, aged 15–54 (n?=?1636). While the MIDI was unassociated with mental health status, the tribal cultural spirituality measure showed a significant relationship with better mental health status. Mental health conditions disproportionately affect AIs. Understanding protective factors such as cultural spirituality that can mitigate mental health disorders is critical to reducing these health disparities. 相似文献

The latest initiative to address mental health needs of the nation, including those of children and youth, is the President’s
New Freedom Commission on Mental Health (NFC). The NFC formulated a benchmark of six goals and related recommendations toward
which the U.S. should strive, including the recommendation that each state develop a comprehensive mental health plan. It
is not clear, however, whether the states’ developed plans address the goals established by the NFC and to what degree. This
project provides a summary of 50 state mental health plans regarding children and youth in the U.S. by examining components
that address each of the six NFC goals and is a test of federal leadership on a state issue. Results indicate that state mental
health plans addressed the NFC goals to differing degrees with specific attention to children and youth mental health services.
Overall, the NFC goal of eliminating disparities in mental health services was addressed most completely, while the NFC goal
of understanding that mental health and physical health are associated was addressed least often. The information provided
by this analysis represents a first step in gaining a comprehensive picture about public policies for the mental health of
children, adolescents, and their families. 相似文献

These studies assessed the risk status of children of untreated alcoholics. In Study 1, a cross-sectional survey of 208 high school students identified 18% as having serious concern about their parents' drinking. In Study 2, 32 children of problem-drinking parents and 39 others who participated in self-help groups were surveyed. Children of problem-drinking parents were more at risk of depression, low self-esteem, and heavy drinking than their peers in the general high school population. Within self-help groups, however, children's symptomatology was not related to their parents' drinking status. The results support the need for preventive intervention for children of problem-drinking parents and for developing strategies for improving the participation rate of such children in the intervention programs that are available. 相似文献

Tested a stress process model for predicting mental health symptoms in children of alcoholics (COAs). Stress and mental health measures were completed twice over a 3-month period by 145 high school students, 43 of whom self-identified as COAs. Using structural equation modeling, a stress process model for predicting mental health symptoms in children provided a good fit to the data. COA status was related to higher levels of negative and lower levels of positive events. In turn, positive and negative life events were found to have an immediate, but not a longitudinal, direct effect on adolescent symptomatology. 相似文献
