Hyperbole is an interesting trope in the perspective of Space Grammar, since it is related to the displacing of a limit (Lausberg in Elemente der literarischen Rhetorik. M.H. Verlag, Munchen 1967; see the Ancient Greek meaning 'to throw over' > 'exaggerate'). Hyperbole semantic mechanisms are related to virtual scanning (Holmqvist and P?uciennik in Imagery in language. Peter Lang, Frankfurt am Main, pp 777-785, 2004). Basic concepts of SIZE and QUANTITY, related image-schemas (IS) and conceptual metaphors (UP IS MORE; IMPORTANT IS BIG: Lakoff 1987, Johnson 1987) are implied in hyperbole processing. The virtual scanning is the simulation of a perceptual domain (here, the vertically oriented space). The virtual limit is defined by expected values on the relevant scale. Since hyperbole is a form of intensification, its linguistic interest lies in cases involving the extremes of a scale, for which a limit can be determined (Schemann 1994). In this experimental study, we analyze the concept of 'limit' in terms of 'abstract motion' and 'oriented space' domains (Langacker 1990) with respect to hyperboles expressed by Italian Verbs of movement. The IS considered are PATH and SOURCE-PATH-GOAL. The latter corresponds to a virtual scale whose limit is arrived at, or overcome, in hyperboles.  相似文献

The foundations of modern society—communications, power, transportation, banking, water supply, and public institutions—depend on interconnected computer systems to operate properly. Hostile groups threaten this “National Infrastructure” by exploiting the strengths and weaknesses intrinsic in its architecture. Activists who utilize networked forms of organization, doctrine, and strategy to protect civil liberties and spread democratic values in cyberspace present an invaluable resource in securing these systems. These “hacktivists,” however, must be provided with the appropriate incentives and protections to encourage coordination with government actors. Facilitating this alliance will require an understanding of the relationships between technology, law, and policy in a democratic, networked society. Mark G. Milone is Associate General Counsel at the New York Mercantile Exchange where he advises on matters relating to technology, intellectual property, electronic commerce, telecommunications, and privacy. Since graduating from Hofstra Law School in 1998, Mark has founded an online business 〈www.virtulaw.com〉, taught “Computers and the Law” at Long Island University, worked in-house with a leading multimedia design agency, and was an associate at Klein, Zelman, Rothermel & Dichter, L.L.P. This article was first published in the American Bar Association’s The Business Lawyer.  相似文献

The study presented the initial report of a project regarding the implementation of the Coping Power Program in Italian community hospitals, and the program’s ability to reduce externalizing behavioral problems in children with a Disruptive Behavior Disorder diagnosis. Usually, interventions for children are implemented by a number of therapists with different personal characteristics, which therefore influence the implementation quality of an intervention. That said, the present study aimed to establish whether the insecure attachment styles of therapists predict unfavorable outcomes for children treated with the Coping Power Program. The sample included 80 children with a Disruptive Behavior Disorder diagnosis and 16 therapists. The results showed that the change in children’s aggressive behavioral problems was significantly related to the levels of the therapist’s preoccupation with relationships. Higher levels of change in aggression (where a higher value means that the aggression at the end of the treatment is higher than aggression at the baseline evaluation) are associated with higher levels of therapist’s preoccupied attachment style (anxious attachment style). This study provided some preliminary evidence that therapists need to be sensitive to their own attachment experiences when delivering therapy for children.  相似文献
