Adjustment problems experienced by children during cross-cultural orientation: a pilot study.

A study was undertaken to investigate the adjustment problems of children aged 8-10 years when they relocated from their native countries to Vienna, Austria. There was a moderate correlation between anxiety and adjustment to changes in the physical and material environment and a significant correlation between anxiety and changes in social support systems. Adjustment to changes in parental behavior and changes in language demands both showed a low negative correlation with anxiety. Children who had spent the least time in Vienna showed greater evidence of anxiety and stress than did children who had lived in the city for at least 1 year.

On the mutual influence of individuals in a social group

A previous mathematical study of a situation, in which the behavior of a larger group of individuals is controlled by a smaller group, is generalized for the case when the activity of the individuals in the group is continuously graded. The existence of two possible social configurations and of sudden transitions from one configuration to another are found in this case also.     

Racial Identity,African Self-Consciousness,and Career Decision Making in African American College Women

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among racial Identity, African self-consciousness, and career decidedness in 212 African American women classified as first year or senior at an historically Black university and a predominantly White university. It was hypothesized that senior women at both institutions would have higher levels of racial identity and African self-consciousness and would be more career decided than first year women. The findings provided partial support for the hypothesis.     

The factor structure of the Vocational Preference Inventory for black and white college students

This study investigated whether the variables measured by the Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI) were the same for both black and white students. Kaiser et al. (1969) have noted that the same measurements used with different populations may not measure the same variables and have presented a method of determining the degree of correspondence in the two populations. In the present study, the VPI scores for a group of black students and a group of white students were factor analyzed separately and the black structure was rotated to correspond to the white structure. The correspondence between the variables measured by the VPI for black and white students was found to be very similar. This is to say that the VPI measures the same variables for both black and white college students.     

Personality types and traits in the Vocational Preference Inventory

The relationships between the six scales on which Holland's (1973) theory is based (viz., Realistic, Investigative, Social, Conventional, Enterprising, Artistic) and the five other scales (viz., Self-control, Masculinity, Status, Infrequency, Acquiescence) of the Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI) (Holland, 1970) were investigated using canonical analysis. Considering the six personality type scales as one set of variables and the five trait scales of the VPI as the second set of variables, five significant canonical correlations were obtained for a sample of 373 mostly white undergraduate students. In a second study, three significant canonical correlations were found for a sample of 115 black college students at another school. The weights of the VPI scales suggested that three patterns of relationships among the scales are shared by the black sample and the mostly white sample.
