In Pursuit of Everyday Creativity

Creativity researchers have long paid careful attention to individual creativity, beginning with studies of well‐known geniuses, and expanding to personality, biographical, cognitive, and social‐psychological studies of individual creative behavior. Little is known, however, about the everyday psychological experience and associated creative behavior in the life and work of ordinary individuals. Yet evidence is mounting that such individuals can be responsible for important instances of creativity and innovation in the world: open innovation, user innovation, and citizen innovation. Research into this phenomenon could do much to advance the study and practice of creativity.     

The Mystery of Edwin Drood: a case study in creativity theories / El Misterio de Edwin Drood: estudio de un caso en las teorías de la creatividad

Abstract

This article analyses the Broadway musical The Mystery of Edwin Drood, by Rupert Holmes, as a case study through which to discuss and highlight modern creativity theories. The musical is viewed through the lens of the Five As, Four Cs, and many other person and product approaches.     

Continued relevance of Dante Alighieri’s Comedy that transformed the soul and the culture

Abstract

The following essay is a modified version of an invited presentation given in Florence, Italy in May 2017. It builds on and extends some of the previous psychoanalytic and multidisciplinary studies of Dante’s Divine Comedy as a “psychoanalysis of the Middle Ages” that greatly contributed to the incipient changes of the cultural episteme. The paper will explore and elaborate the continued relevance of Dantian proto-psychoanalytic insight into the complex role of regression, destruction, transgression, and conflict in generating growth, expansion, and creativity, and the ways in which ethics and erotics intertwine in a complex path towards unity, within the context of his multivocal presubjective, intrasubjective, and intersubjective inquiry leading to psychic reorganization. The liminal nature of Dante’s poetry, extending the symbolic and representational range in a way unprecedented in the vernacular literature of his time, vivifying and representing what is traditionally thought of as beyond representation, will also be considered in terms of its relevance to the contemporary psychoanalytic discourse.     

Taming the Brain Weasels: Reducing Self-Criticism Through Externalization and Compassion

ABSTRACT

Self-criticism is a natural process occurring across mental health disorders. When self-criticism is excessive, vulnerability to mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety increases. Compassion-focused approaches can effectively address a variety of concerns; however, highly self-critical individuals might balk at the idea of self-directed compassion due to shame, self-blame, or discomfort with positive emotions, resulting in treatment resistance. The brain weasel is an intervention strategy that uses the Narrative Therapy technique of externalization as an intermediate step toward compassion-oriented work. Through creative externalization and therapeutic humor, self-critical individuals can decenter and explore their self-critical dialogue. This article contains several ways to introduce and use the brain weasel personification in counseling.     

A bridge too far: yoga,spirituality, and contested space in the Pacific Northwest

ABSTRACT

In 2015 a plan to celebrate the inaugural International Day of Yoga in Vancouver generated a powerful backlash. What might have been for some a public expression of their interest in a trendy wellness activity, and for others a meaningful demonstration of an important spiritual practice, was cancelled just a week after it was announced. How did this single postural yoga class so quickly and definitively galvanise public opinion, and what can this teach us about the machinations of public discourse? In this brief but revealing controversy, most interlocutors focused on local political considerations, paying somewhat less attention to the now common critique that postural yoga is elitist and vapid, and virtually none to claims and metaphors related to spirituality that circulated widely among practitioners and promoters. This incident may remind us that religious and spiritual claims are not sui generis but always part of larger social discourses that reveal a great deal about quite this-worldly concerns, interests, and values.
