What is the nature of the representations acquired in implicit statistical
learning? Recent results in the field of language learning have shown that
adults and infants are able to find the words of an artificial language when
exposed to a continuous auditory sequence consisting in a random ordering of
these words. Such performance can only be based on processing the transitional
probabilities between sequence elements. Two different kinds of mechanisms may
account for these data: Participants may either parse the sequence into smaller
chunks corresponding to the words of the artificial language, or they may become
progressively sensitive to the actual values of the transitional probabilities
between syllables. The two accounts are difficult to differentiate because they
make similar predictions in comparable experimental settings. In this study, we
present two experiments that aimed at contrasting these two theories. In these
experiments, participants had to learn 2 sets of pseudo-linguistic regularities:
Language 1 (L1) and Language 2 (L2) presented in the context of a serial
reaction time task. L1 and L2 were either unrelated (none of the syllabic
transitions of L1 were present in L2), or partly related (some of the
intra-words transitions of L1 were used as inter-words transitions of L2). The
two accounts make opposite predictions in these two settings. Our results
indicate that the nature of the representations depends on the learning
condition. When cues were presented to facilitate parsing of the sequence,
participants learned the words of the artificial language. However, when no cues
were provided, performance was strongly influenced by the employed transitional

Abstract This paper outlines an application of psychoanalysis in the tradition of Donald Winnicott in the clinical practice of paediatric diagnostic radiography. A practical way in which psychoanalytic theory may be employed in the care of essentially ‘normal’ children and their parents in the ‘abnormal’ setting of a district general hospital is demonstrated. In the social sciences, there is increasing interest in spatial practices and the meaning of places. The meaning of the psychotherapeutic room and its boundaries has traditionally been underlined in psychodynamic practice. In this study we investigated how clinical psychologists, working from different perspectives and with varying interventions and populations understand and use the consulting room. Five clinical psychologists were interviewed about how they perceive and use consulting rooms. The interviews were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The participants understood the consulting room as a logistic unit but also as a welcoming place for relational encounters and sensed that spatial stability was important for their capacity to be fully attentive to their clients. Moreover, technological booking systems could hinder clinical work. The results were understood with respect to Winnicott’s theories of transitional space and holding. In sum, the importance of the room does not seem to be of concern exclusively to psychodynamic psychologists. On the contrary, it seems as if psychologists working with varying interventions and from different perspectives emphasise stable and personal consulting rooms that permit them to adapt to the needs of the clients, be attentive, and avoid disturbances. 相似文献

Abstract This paper presents accounts of work with mental health service users in a multicultural residential setting and, explores some of the difficulties involved in working from a psychodynamic perspective in such a setting. It argues that a psychoanalytic understanding of the role of phantasy in the experience of difference, upon which ideas of culture and identity are constructed, can be helpful to practitioners concerned with addressing the consequences of their clients' experience of racism and other forms of discrimination. Learning local regularities in sequentially structured materials is typically assumed to be based on encoding of the frequencies of these regularities. We explore the view that transitional probabilities between elements of chunks, rather than frequencies of chunks, may be the primary factor in artificial grammar learning (AGL). The transitional probability model (TPM) that we propose is argued to provide an adaptive and parsimonious strategy for encoding local regularities in order to induce sequential structure from an input set of exemplars of the grammar. In a variant of the AGL procedure, in which participants estimated the frequencies of bigrams occurring in a set of exemplars they had been exposed to previously, participants were shown to be more sensitive to local transitional probability information than to mere pattern frequencies. 相似文献

Previous studies of verbal probabilities have tried to place expressions like a chance, possible, and certain on 0–1 numerical probability scales. We ask instead, out of a range of outcomes, which outcome a verbal probability suggests. When, for instance, a sample of laptop batteries lasts from 1.5 to 3.5 hours, what is a certain and what is a possible duration? Experiment 1 showed that speakers associate certain with low values and possible with (unlikely) high or maximal values. In Experiment 2, this methodology was applied to several positive and negative verbal probability phrases, showing a preference for high rather than low or middle values in a distribution. Experiment 3 showed that such maxima are not universally described by large numbers. For instance, maximum speed is often described in terms of a small number of time units. What can (possibly) happen is accordingly sometimes described with very low and sometimes with very high values, depending upon focus of interest. Finally, participants in Experiment 4 were given the role of hearers rather than speakers and were asked to infer outcome ranges from verbal probabilities. Hearers appeared to be partly aware of speakers' tendencies to describe outcomes at the top of the range. 相似文献

An elastic–viscoplastic model has been developed for nanotwinned (nt) metals based on coupled intra-twin and twin-boundary-mediated (TBM) deformation mechanisms. The grain-size dependence of intra-twin plasticity was incorporated in the proposed model to determine the transitional twin thickness corresponding to the maximum strength. In addition, the joint distribution of grain size and twin thickness was also taken into account to simulate the microstructure of nt metals. The results obtained show that the TBM deformation mechanism dominated at low strain rate and small twin thickness, and that the grain-size and twin-thickness distributions had significant influence on the macroscopic behavior of nt metals. A linear relation between the transitional twin thickness and grain size is predicted by the proposed model, which is in good agreement with the results obtained from three-dimensional molecular dynamics simulations and experiments. 相似文献

Abstract: This article examines the uses of official apologies for massive human rights abuses in the context of democratic transitions. It sketches a normative model of apologies, highlighting how they serve to provide some moral and practical redress for past wrongs. It discusses a number of contributions apologies can make, including publicly confirming the status of victims as moral agents, fostering public reexamination and deliberation about social norms, and promoting critical understandings of history that undermine apologist historical accounts. The article then presents certain normative criteria that any official apology must satisfy, and concludes with a discussion of several theoretical and practical challenges that apologies face in transitional contexts. It draws on Chilean President Patricio Aylwin's apology for his predecessor's crimes as an illustration of some of the promises and challenges that apologies face. 相似文献
