Twenty-five hospitalized nonfluent, fluent, and global aphasic patients who were several months past the onset of their illness were compared for presence and severity of depression based on four psychopathological measures. The nonfluent aphasic patients had both greater frequency and severity of depression than the other two groups. CT scans showed that the global aphasic patients had the largest lesion size (volumetric) and showed a strong correlation between lesion size and degree of depression. In contrast, patients with fluent aphasias showed an inverse correlation between severity of depression and lesion size; among the nonfluent aphasic patients there was no significant correlation. Depression appears to be common in this population of hospitalized aphasic patients with chronic illness and nonfluent patients are the most depressed group within this population. The increased frequency and severity of depression in the nonfluent patients did not appear to be related to their overall physical or cognitive impairment; two possible mechanisms are discussed. 相似文献

This study was conducted to provide an indirect test of Wingate's “modified vocalization” hypothesis. In this formulation, the improved fluency that stutterers experience in various novel conditions is attributed to changes in the key correlates of stress, namely, fundamental frequency, vocal SPL, and rate.Normal speakers and stutterers read aloud in an habitual condition following instructions to read at higher- and lower-than-normal pitches. Objective measures were taken of subjects' fundamental frequency, fundamental frequency deviation, vocal SPL, and fluent reading rate. Disfluences were also counted. Findings showed that both stutterers and normals altered several features of voicing from the habitual to the two experimental conditions. Significant condition main effects emerged for fundamental frequency deviation, vocal SPL, fluent reading rate, and disfluency. The only meaningful between-group difference noted showed that the stutterers were more disfluent than the normals across all conditions. Results were interpreted as supporting Wingate's “modified vocalization” position and were discussed relative to how the vocal changes observed might act to promote fluency. 相似文献

In order to test a model describing the occurence of fluency breaks throughout the life cycle, spontaneous speech samples of 40 nonstutterers and 4 stutterers above the age of 50 were perceptually analyzed. Fluency breaks were classified into categories of formulative or motoric breaks. The results supported research, noting an increase in formulative fluency breaks (especially fillers and interjections) for older speakers. There was, however, a significant decrease in the occurence of formulative fluency breaks during the final years of late adulthood. No change was found in the occurence of motoric fluency breaks in the nonstuttering speakers. Stuttering speakers had significantly less formulative breaks and significantly more motoric breaks than nonstuttering speakers. 相似文献

Voice initiation time (VIT) and voice termination time (VTT) was measured in seven stuttering and eight nonstuttering children ranging in age from 4 yr, 6 mo to 6 yr, 10 mo. The experimental task was the production of /a/ in response to a 1000-Hz pure tone. Voice initiation time was defined as the period of time elapsing between the onset of the auditory stimulus and the onset of the subject's response of /a/, as displayed on an oscilloscope. Voice termination time was defined as the latency between termination of the stimulus tone and the point at which the oscilloscopic signal decreased by 90%. No statistically significant differences were found between the two groups with respect to either VIT or VTT. Japanese bantam hens were trained to discriminate between geometrical figures varying along four integral dimensions. Only
one dimension predicted food: selections of sharp-cornered figures were reinforced, while selections of rounded figures were
not. In experiment 1, hens were subsequently trained to discriminate between nine figure pairs in a simultaneous discrimination
task. Because single pairs contained multiple redundant cues, whereas the relevant dimension was obvious only across stimulus
pairs, the results revealed effects of both generalization and reversal learning. Accordingly, learning speed was enhanced
for later discriminations. Experiment 2 tested the hens’ transfer performance to unknown pairs, following experience of 9
or 18 figure pairs. Four of seven hens showed reliable transfer after experience with 9 figures, but only three showed transfer
after experience with 18 figures, indicating lower transfer with higher number of stimulus pairs learned. In experiment 3,
hens were trained to discriminate 27 figure pairs. Discrimination ratios further decreased and the groups of pairs differed
significantly in their ratios of discrimination. Individual hens’ pecking behaviour was analysed in relation to each dimension
of single figures and in relation to relative differences in the levels of dimensions between paired figures. Hens were shown
to be oriented towards irrelevant information and more towards relational and configurational than elemental and dimensional
aspects. The results are discussed in the biological context of individual recognition in chickens’ dominance hierarchies,
in which we suppose that chickens identify individual flock mates by representation of their visual pattern rather than by
single characteristics.

The present study measured the effects of stimulus and reinforcer variations on pigeons' behavior in two different choice procedures. Two intensities of white light were presented as the stimuli on the main key in a switching-key concurrent schedule and as the sample stimuli in a signal-detection procedure. Under both procedures, the scheduled rate of reinforcement was varied across conditions to produce various ratios of obtained reinforcement. These ratios were obtained for seven pairs of light intensities. In the concurrent schedules, the effects of reinforcer-ratio variations were positively correlated with the physical disparity between the two light intensities. In the signal-detection procedure, changes in the reinforcer ratio produced greater effects on performance when stimulus disparity was very low or very high compared to those found at intermediate levels of stimulus disparity. This discrepancy creates a dilemma for existing behavioral models of signal-detection performance. 相似文献

A patient with a rather pure word deafness showed extreme suppression of right ear signals under dichotic conditions, suggesting that speech signals were being processed in the right hemisphere. Systematic errors in the identification and discrimination of natural and synthetic stop consonants further indicated that speech sounds were not being processed in the normal manner. Auditory comprehension improved considerably however, when the range of speech stimuli was limited by contextual constraints. Two experiments were conducted to demonstrate that human infants 3 months of age perceive color in a normal, trichromatic manner. In the first experiment, the visual attention of 30 infants was monitored in a habituation-dishabituation paradigm that used spectral and white lights with brightness factors eliminated. Infants discriminated white from monochromatic light in a region of the spectrum (490–500 nm) where color-normal adults can but color-deficient adults cannot. In the second experiment which also used a habituation paradigm, eight infants showed good discrimination between hues in a region of the spectrum (560–580 nm) where color-deficient adults typically show no hue discrimination. Results from these studies of the neutral zone and hue discrimination evidence trichromatic vision in infancy and are discussed in the context of their several clinical, social, and intellectual implications. 相似文献

Three social-interaction behaviors of a withdrawn, chronic schizophrenic were increased using a discriminated avoidance (“nagging”) procedure. The three behaviors were: (a) voice volume loud enough so that two-thirds of his speech was intelligible at a distance of 3 m; (b) duration of speech of at least 15 sec; (c) placement of hands and elbows on the armrests of the chair in which he was sitting. “Nagging” consisted of verbal prompts to improve performance when the behaviors did not meet their criteria. A combined withdrawal and multiple-baseline design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the procedure, and the contingency was sequentially applied to each of the three behaviors in each of four different interactions to determine the degree of stimulus and response generalization. Results indicated that the contingency was the effective element in increasing the patient's appropriate performance, and that there was a high degree of stimulus generalization and a moderate degree of response generalization. After the patient's discharge from the hospital, the durability of improvement across time and setting was determined in followup sessions conducted at a day treatment center and at a residential care home. Volume and duration generalized well to the new settings, while arm placement extinguished immediately. 相似文献

Differences which statistically significant at the .05 and .01 level are presented. Generally, minimum differences of 3 to 5 points are necessary at the .05 level and 4 to 6 points at the .01 level.
