The long-lasting effects of emotional trauma and the important role of unconscious emotional defenses have become increasingly recognized only in the past century. Yet their role is actually manifest, although still overlooked, in one of the most well-known of biblical stories. This paper presents the story of Joseph and his brothers, and the important lessons it teaches about unconscious defenses and the optimal handling of emotional trauma. 相似文献

This article discusses the historical role of Islam in the political evolution of Guinea in the broader context of Muslims’
experience of nation/state building and globalization in Africa. This role is examined on the premise that Islam is one of
the major globalizing forces (more in the body of the paper on this idea of Islam as a globalizing force) responsible for
the formation of what experts have conceptualized as Africa’s “triple heritage” or the juncture of African traditional values,
Islamic influence, and the legacy of Western colonialism. The article examines Islam’s role in the creation of cultural identities,
territorial polities, and complex regional and trans-continental networks of trade and scholarship in pre-colonial West Africa;
the formation of fronts of resistance to European colonial conquest and occupation; and the mobilization of new nationalist
forces which sparked the national liberation struggle of the 1940s and 1950s in the region. The discussion of key concepts
such as nationalism, nation/state building, internationalism, and globalization exposes the limited applicability of existing
theories to the African experience by highlighting the complexity of post-colonial cultural reconstruction and nation building
on the continent. From this perspective, the article focuses upon the political and ideological contradictions having marked
the relations of the regime of the Parti Démocratique de Guinée (PDG) under President Ahmed Sékou Touré and conservative Guinean
Muslim circles in the early years of independence, due in part to Touré’s Marxist and socialist leanings of the time. Also
comprehensively discussed is this regime’s subsequent ideological incorporation and diplomatic use of Islam in an effort to
curb anti-PDG opposition at home and abroad and to free itself from isolation by the West. Hence, President Touré’s successful
policy of “offensive diplomatique” geared primarily toward Arab and Muslim nations and organizations but also, though somewhat
indirectly, toward Western powers, serves as an example of the dynamics of Islamic internationalism in Cold War global affairs.
Past experiences of party-centered and state-controlled regimentation of religious organizations under Touré’s state-party
regime is compared to the current trend of self-decentralization and self-internationalization of Islamic forces in light
of the challenges of religious radicalism and post-Cold War politics in Africa.

The Varieties of Forgiveness Experience: Working toward a Comprehensive Definition of Forgiveness 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Kathleen A. Lawler-Row Cynthia A. Scott Rachel L. Raines Meirav Edlis-Matityahou Erin W. Moore 《Journal of religion and health》2007,46(2):233-248
The definition of forgiveness was explored in a group of 270 young adults, and the underlying dimensions of their definitions
compared with those of philosophers, theologians and psychological researchers. Three dimensions were identified: orientation
(self, other), direction (passive letting go of negative experiences, active enhancement of positive experiences) and form
(emotion, cognition and behavior). Definitions employing a passive letting go of negative experiences were associated with
more state forgiveness. Gender differences were found in state forgiveness and in the employment of passive vs. active dimensions
of forgiveness.
Dr. Kathleen A. Lawler-Row is Professor of Psychology at East Carolina University. Her work focuses on the physiological and
health correlates of forgiveness. Correspondence to Dr. K. A. Lawler-Row, e-mail: rowk@ecu.edu.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Martin Luther King Jr. were both pastors and theologians who wrestled with the meaning of Christ‐centered faithfulness for their time. They were advocates of social justice and human rights who resisted the temptation towards a secularizing two‐realms split that makes Christianity a private life religion; they defied contemporary laws and cultural norms, and they faced opposition to their work from many of their fellow Christians. We may learn from their prophetic witness for Christian faithfulness in our contexts by paying attention to their respective interpretations of the way of Jesus. 相似文献

John W. Fisher 《International Journal of Children's Spirituality》2015,20(3-4):191-203
Over the last three decades, qualitative studies of children’s spirituality have variously mentioned God. During this time, nearly 300 quantitative measures of spirituality and well-being have been developed and employed with youth and adults. However, very little similar work has been done with children. An article in this journal reported development of a purported spiritual sensitivity scale. That paper is critiqued here on the basis of its statistical methods as well as its failure to mention God in a study with Australian Catholic school students. In this paper, spiritual well-being (SWB) is taken as being reflected in the quality of relationships that people have with themselves, with others, with the environment and/or with God. Empirical evidence derived from extensive studies with primary school children in State, Catholic, Christian community and other independent schools in Australia reveals that an instrument called Feeling Good, Living Life is a statistically sound spirituality measure for children. Of the four sets of relationships reflecting SWB, relationship with God explains greatest variance in SWB overall. In this respect, relationship with God is most important for SWB among primary school students, just as other studies have shown it to be among youth and adults. 相似文献

We intended to study unaddressed psychosocial and spiritual needs among older people (of at least 65 years of age) living in nine residential/nursing homes in Bavaria in Southern Germany. We conducted an anonymous cross-sectional study with standardised questionnaires (i.e., Spiritual Needs Questionnaire, Brief Multidimensional Life Satisfaction Scale, Schedule for Meaning in Life Evaluation, etc.). Religious needs were predicted best by residents’ religious trust. Existential needs and inner peace needs correlated moderately with grief, and were predicted best by family/social support needs. All members of an interdisciplinary team should be trained in the specific competence of recognising older people's unmet spiritual needs. When these needs are recognised, caregivers and relatives have the chance to react. 相似文献

God initiated mission and intends to achieve it by work of the Holy Spirit. Thus, mission—which God commands his church to accomplish—belongs to God, not to human agency. Prior to ascending to heaven, Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to his disciples, and asked them to wait in Jerusalem. This Holy Spirit is given to enable them to be witnesses of Jesus from Jerusalem to the end of the world. This implies that the church has to partner with the Holy Spirit to fulfil this mission. Missionaries need to consciously work together with Spirit and be directed and guided by the Spirit. 相似文献

Practical Matters and Ultimate Concerns, “Doing,” and “Being”: A Diary Study of the Chaplain's Role in the Care of the Seriously Ill in an Urban Acute Care Hospital 下载免费PDF全文
Ellen L. Idler George H. Grant Tammie Quest Zachary Binney Molly M. Perkins 《Journal for the scientific study of religion》2015,54(4):722-738
Systematic observational studies of the chaplain's role and function in the secular health‐care setting are few. With an episode‐based diary recorded on handheld digital tablets, palliative care chaplains at a large urban hospital with a diverse patient population recorded details of patient visits in near‐real time. Cluster analysis revealed groups of activities we called "doing" and "being," and conversation topics of "practical matters" and "ultimate concerns”; chaplains were most satisfied with visits that involved all of these. Chaplains offer patients and families a space to express significant concerns; however, visits with spiritual or religious activities or topics were relatively rare. Broad quality of life concerns are central to the evolving professional role of chaplains in the secular setting of the modern hospital. 相似文献
