On Musical Cognition and Archaic Meaning Schemata

In clinical psychoanalytic work, one often encounters psychical material that is devoid of form or shape. This kind of material is often manifest as concrete somatic sensations on the border of the body and mind. At the same time, it is a primitive body-related self-experience that functions as a background, an essential requirement for more developed, differentiated self-experiences. Bi-logic is a theoretical method by which one can outline these early, partially formless processes and states of mind. This paper includes an overview of the main hypotheses of Matte Blanco's bi-logical vertex, which focuses on the extreme symmetrization of mental phenomena that emanate from the body. Clinical vignettes illustrate ways in which analysis can gradually bring forth such form from the previously formless, dissociated traumatic material into the range of the conscious mind. In this way, the capacity for thinking and reflection increases and the early elements of self-experience are enlivened.     

Evolution,green beards,and skin hue wage discrimination

This paper provides an evolutionary rationale for both interracial and intraracial wage differentials by examining the implications of white employers mediating their employer‐employee relationships on the basis of genetic similarity. If in organized labor markets; relationships mediated through genetic similarity are optimal in terms of Darwinian fitness, a fundamental evolutionary implication is that the Marginal Rate of Substitution (MRS) in Darwinian fitness holding extended fitness constant equals the MRS in preferences holding utility constant. Given such an evolutionary equilibrium, results are derived showing that the strength of tastes for discrimination depends upon the skin hue of non‐white workers. The rationale established for racial wage differentials is that where skin hue serves to indicate genetic similarity between employer and employee, wage differentials emerge that are a function of skin hue.     

Consciousness and the self

With his notion of absolute consciousness, Sartre tries to rethink the relation between consciousness and the self. What is the origin of subjectivity in relation to a consciousness that is characterized as impersonal and as a radical lucidity? In this article, I attempt to question that origin and the nature as such of the subject in its relation to a consciousness that in its essence is not yet subjective. On the contrary, it is characterized by a selfpresence that is so radical that it threatens every form of self‐knowledge.     

可用性测试中用户皮肤电水平变化分析——基于EEMD的方法

根据可用性测试过程中用户皮肤电水平（skin conductance level,SCL）的变化,提出了基于总体平均经验模式分解（ensemble empirical mode deeomposition,EEMD）技术的用户SCL信号趋势和变化特征提取方法。首先,应用EEMD技术对SCL信号进行分解,得到若干独立的基本模式分量及趋势项;然后,对基本模式分量进行显著性检验,进而实现信号的去噪去趋势重构,得到用户SCL的变化特征。实验结果表明：界面的可用性问题使得用户SCL单调趋势变得不明显;当用户遇到可用性问题时,SCL去噪去趋势重构信号波动幅度明显变大,Wilcoxon符号秩检验表明不同阶段用户SCL去噪去趋势重构信号功率差异显著。因此,基于EEMD的信号处理方法能有效支撑可用性测试过程中用户SCL变化的分析。     

Self-harm by omission: A question of skin containment

Abstract

This paper explores the phenomenon of ‘self-harm by omission’ and its relationship to other kinds of self-harming behaviour and to disturbances of psychic skin functioning (Bick, 1968 Bick, E. 1968. The experience of the skin in early object relations. International Journal of Psychoanalysis, 49: 484–486. [PubMed], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]). Process material from work with a patient ‘Kate’ is introduced to illustrate and clarify the matters under consideration. The conceptual framework provided by psychic skin theory is described, with particular reference to the defences of ‘toughening’ and ‘porosity’ and their relevance to understanding different kinds of self-harm. Arising from this work, suggestions are advanced with regard to further development and an extended range of application of a ‘skin containment’ conceptual framework.     

Making room: Developing reflective capacity through group analytic psychotherapy – in the analyst and in the group. Part one

Abstract

This paper is in two parts. This, the first part, traces the inter-related development of trainee group analyst and training group during the first nine months of the group's life. The influence that personal group analytic psychotherapy, supervision and theoretical learning have on the trainee are also considered in relation to the development of the group and its members, many of whom suffer from narcissistic and borderline disorders. The metaphor of ‘making room’ is used to explore the efforts of analyst and group to contain the chaotic, confused and unbounded projective identifications of its members. In this way, amidst the crowded turbulence of the group, a space begins to open up in which, slowly and painfully, the capacity for reflection may emerge.     

Vaginoplasty in Male to Female Transsexuals Using Penile Skin and Urethral Flap

ABSTRACT.

Objectives: Vaginoplasty presents the main problem in male to female surgery. There are many operative techniques that can be used, but none is ideal. We present our one stage vaginoplasty in male to female sex reassignment surgery.

Patients and Methods: The principle of our technique is based on penile disassembly and usage of all penile entities for vaginoplasty except corpora cavernosa. We developed our disassembly technique on a very large number of severe hypospadias reconstruction and adrenogenital “conversions.” Penile skin flaps and urethral work are used in each of these. Our new vagina consists of two parts: a long vascularized urethral flap and a pedicled island tube skin flap created from the penile skin. The urethral flap is embedded into the skin tube. The tube, consisting of skin and urethral flap, is inverted, thus forming the new vagina. The new vagina is inserted into the previously prepared perineal cavity between the urethra, bladder, and rectum. The new vagina is fixed to the sacrospinous ligament. The labia minora and majora are formed from the remaining penile and scrotal skin.

Results: The follow-up ranged from 3 months to 6 years (mean 4.6 years). Good cosmetic and functional results were obtained in 77 out of 89 patients (87%).

Conclusions: The technique provides results that have the most normal anatomical and physiological characteristics, in comparison to other methods, since all penile entities are used (except corpora cavernosa) to form almost normal external female genitalia. Vaginoplasty using pedicled penile skin with a urethral flap could be a very good alternative to other methods of vaginoplasty.     

The association of religiosity,spirituality, and ethnic background with ego-pathology in acute schizophrenia

Studies have highlighted the impact of ego-consciousness, religiosity and spirituality on psychotic symptoms, although so far no study has investigated if and how these factors may be interrelated. In this exploratory cross-sectional study, involving 42 patients with a diagnosis of acute paranoid schizophrenia (DSM-IV), we assessed religiosity (Religious Orientation Test) spirituality (Spiritual Transcendence Scale) and ego-pathology (Ego Pathology Inventory) and analysed any relationship with these and psychopathological symptoms (Positive and Negative Symptom Scale). The subjects were divided into four ethnic groups (Caucasian, Afro-Caribbean, African, and Asian) and a structured, qualitative interview on religious needs and self-concepts was also conducted. Using a multivariate analysis, we found statistically significant negative associations between the scores on ego and common pathology and religiosity and spirituality as covariates. This was seen across all ethnic groups. The findings are discussed in respect of the potential clinical importance of ethnic, religious and spiritual factors for assessment and management of patients with schizophrenia.     

Narcissism, hypochondria and the problem of alternative theories

This paper is an experiment in conceptual integration and clinical theory testing. Its argument is that narcissism and sexual object love develop from a single source and continue to interact during childhood development and adult life (Freud) and that drives in their oedipal and other formations are not merely disintegration products of narcissism (Kohut). Material from two analyses, supplemented by material from two others, indicate that narcissistic injury was a significant factor in the neuroses of these patients but that aggressive and libidinal conflicts were also decisive such that their hypochondriac symptoms were compositions of their interacting causality. As a result these neuroses are negative instances of Kohut's theory of narcissism. The hypochondriac symptoms as they emerged could not have had the structure and dynamics they actually had nor could the analytic process these patients underwent have achieved the far-reaching and durable amelioration of these symptoms that occurred. On the positive side, these analyses are but two inductive instances that support Freud's theory. However, one major difficulty of the faddishness of psychoanalytic theorizing is that much of worth is lost from general theories that turn out not to be supportable. The clinical material from these two cases which disprove basic elements of self-psychology metapsychology also require adjustments to classical theory that integrate the contributions of self-psychology to psychoanalytic clinical theory.     

Limitations to the capacity to love

This paper is a meditation on the potential and problems of establishing and maintaining loving and passionate relationships, drawn from a lifetime of struggling with these issues in the course of doing analysis. It describes interferences with the capacity for mature sexual love as reflecting various psychopathological conditions. These limitations include a variety of psychological restrictions determined most frequently by masochistic, narcissistic and paranoid personality features. Clinical case material illustrates both mature and disturbed capability for love relations.
