This essay advocates dual-inheritance theory for the renewal of Religious Studies. Not by Genes Alone , by Peter J. Richerson and Robert Boyd (2005), presents this approach in an admirably clear manner. To make my case, I survey the development of Religious Studies since the Enlightenment, with special attention to the American context. The historical survey brings us to the dawn of the twenty-first century, where Religious Studies is often unnecessarily limited to sui generis Religious Studies and its postmodern critics. Neither approach engages regnant Darwinian theoretical frameworks of gene-culture coevolution productively. In this context, I situate the contributions of dual-inheritance theory as presented by Richerson and Boyd and offer examples of its utility for progress in Religious Studies, its ability to open cooperation across disciplinary boundaries, and its salutary demystification of religion as a culturally unique and coherent phenomenon. I conclude by addressing concerns scholars of religion might entertain regarding the issue of reductionism and how an emergent science of religion might contribute to the traditional concerns of religion-and-science dialogue as it has evolved in the English-speaking context. 相似文献

I offer a critical exposition and reconstruction of Michael Oakeshott's views on natural science. The principal aim is to enrich Oakeshott's modal schema by throwing light on it in terms of its internal consistency and by bringing to bear on it recent developments in philosophy in general and the philosophy of science in particular. The discussion brings out the special place reserved for philosophy, the crucial tenet of the separateness of these modes seen as Leibnizian monads as well as the special status allowed to science. It considers the possibility of combining one moment of philosophical thinking, namely ethics, with science in the midst of such modal separateness. I first offer a general introduction of how to approach Oakeshott's views on science. The next section stresses philosophy and its relation to science. This is followed by an elaboration of what the modes of experience are meant to be and how science is placed among them. An examination of Oakeshott's more particular views on science concludes the essay. 相似文献

To assess some of the ways that blogs appear to be affecting news reporting and consumption as well as some giving a sense
as to their implications for social stability, this paper presents a preliminary analysis of views and comments by bloggers
in Asian countries. Data on this topic was gathered by e-mail interviews of Asian bloggers as well as by collecting writings
and data from relevant websites. Analysis suggests that, in many societies in Asia and elsewhere, bloggers have become an
important source of news outside of but also alongside of traditional mainstream media. A trend is observed that information
and communication technologies are reconfiguring the traditional balance between the creators and consumers of news and the
journalistic reporting profession. Internet blogs and mobile phones, among other technologies, have made new information and
perspectives available concerning local events; they have also added important and often oppositional interpretations of the
significance and meaning of those events. Thus, on both professional and economic grounds, the New Media are reducing the
relative prominence of traditional news outlets as well as stature of professional journalists.

This paper takes a phenomenological hermeneutic orientation to explicate and explore the notion of the grey zone of health
and illness and seeks to develop the concept through an examination of the case of alcohol consumption. The grey zone is an
interpretive area referring to the irremediable zone of ambiguity that haunts even the most apparently resolute discourse.
This idea points to an ontological indeterminacy, in the face of which decisions have to be made with regard to the health
of a person (e.g., an alcoholic), a system (e.g., the health system), or a society. The fundamental character of this notion
will be developed in relation to the discourse on health and the limitations of different disciplinary practices. The case
of alcohol consumption will be used to tease out the grey zone embedded in the different kinds of knowledge made available
through the disciplinary traditions of medical science, with its emphasis on somatic well-being, and anthropology, with its
focus on communal well-being. This tension or grey zone embedded in different knowledge outcomes will be shown to have a discursive
parallel with the dialogue between the Athenian, the Spartan, and the Cretan in Plato’s Laws. Making use of the dialogical approach as described by Gadamer, the Athenian’s particular resolution of the tension will be
explored as a case study to demonstrate the necessarily particular analysis involved in a grey zone resolution.

An important part of David Hume’s work is his attempt to put the natural sciences on a firmer foundation by introducing the
scientific method into the study of human nature. This investigation resulted in a novel understanding of the mind, which
in turn informed Hume’s critical evaluation of the scope and limits of the scientific method as such. However, while these
latter reflections continue to influence today’s philosophy of science, his theory of mind is nowadays mainly of interest
in terms of philosophical scholarship. This paper aims to show that, even though Hume’s recognition in the cognitive sciences
has so far been limited, there is an opportunity to reevaluate his work in the context of more recent scientific developments.
In particular, it is argued that we can gain a better understanding of his overall philosophy by tracing the ongoing establishment
of the enactive approach. In return, this novel interpretation of Hume’s ‘science of man’ is used as the basis for a consideration
of the current and future status of the cognitive sciences.

Early in Aristotle’s terminology, and ever since, “essence” has been conceived as having two meanings, namely “universality”
and “individuality”. According to the tradition of thought that has dominated throughout the history of Western philosophy,
“essence” unequivocally refers to “universality”. As a matter of fact, however, “universality” cannot cover Aristotle’s definition
and formulation of “essence”: Essence is what makes a thing “happen to be this thing.” “Individuality” should be the deep
meaning of “essence”. By means of an analysis of some relevant Western thoughts and a review of cultural realities, it can
be concluded that the difference between the attitudes toward things of the natural sciences and the humane sciences mainly
lies in the fact that the former focus on the pursuit of universal regularity, whereas the latter go after the value and significance
of human life. The movement from natural things to cultural things is a process in which essence shifts from universality
to individuality. It is the author’s contention that what should be stressed in the fields of human culture and society is
the construction of an ideal society that is “harmonious yet not identical”, on the basis of respecting and developing individual
peculiarity and otherness.

从个体水平研究面试考官的有效性是面试研究的一个热点问题.本研究对面试考官权重策略的类型及类型的比较进行了实证研究。研究运用线性规划策略捕捉方法,分析了公务员考试中28名考官在结构化面试和无领导小组讨论中的权重策略,研究了权重策略对评分和录用的影响,结果发现:(1)在结构化面试中存在三种策略,在无领导小组讨论中存在两种策略,这些策略大部分是规范的(符合评分规则的要求),它们会随面试情景发生变化;(2)权重策略影响了考官的评分区分度和最终考生的录用结果,规范性策略具有较高的区分度和录用预测效度。研究最后对结果的理论和实践意义进行了讨论。 相似文献
