Quality of life (QOL) is an amorphous concept; it is normative and value laden. Economists’ emphasis on the standard of living
brings into focus the value of growth, expansion and acceleration. Financial status is important but has limited impact on
feelings of happiness. The subjective experiences (e.g. wellbeing, cheerfulness, satisfaction, contentment, empathy, faith,
wisdom and purpose in life) complement the economist’s concept of standard of living. The criteria for determining the QOL
may relate to adaptive mechanisms one employs in everyday life. Dispositions of altruism, sublimation, humor, empathy, optimism,
and wisdom also contribute to the QOL. It appears that QOL is essentially a cultural concept overflowing both economics and
psychology. Non-Western approaches such as Chinese, Buddhist, Hindu thought, have proposed balancing as a key factor in QOL.
The highest quality of life is one in which one transcends dualism in life, namely happiness — sorrow, pleasure — pain, love
— hate, etc and cultivate the capacity to remain unassailed by the dualities, rather than that of balance. We need to attend
to the views of humanistic disciplines and examine the issue of QOL in the context of the world view one holds. 相似文献

Researchers have made great strides in conceptualizing and assessing contextualized personality—how people’s personalities vary across different contexts (e.g., among friends, co-workers, and relationship partners). We investigated how global and contextualized personality traits are linked to relationship satisfaction. In Study 1, longitudinal associations between global and contextualized personality and relationship satisfaction were examined in a sample of adults in committed dating relationships. Study 2 investigated actor and partner effects of global and contextualized personality on relationship satisfaction in undergraduate couples. Study 3 used observer ratings of contextualized personality traits expressed in couples’ daily Instant Messages (IMs). These results demonstrate that contextualized personality—in particular neuroticism—is linked to the quality of both current and future romantic relationships. 相似文献

Nickerson et al. (2003, Psychological Science 14, pp. 531–536) demonstrated in a longitudinal study that the negative relation between aspirations for financial success and subjective well-being found by other researchers was mitigated by high household income. The present study first refined the analysis in Nickerson et al. (2003) and then explored two additional issues: (a) who aspires to financial success? and (b) how is financial success achieved? Analysis indicated that individuals with strong financial aspirations are socially inclined, confident, ambitious, politically conservative, traditional, conventional, and relatively less able academically, but not psychologically distressed. Financial success is achieved via the job and, for women only, via marriage. Financial aspirations influence job income both by influencing choice of occupation and by influencing job income within occupation; however, achieving financial success depends on having the personal resources to do so. Women with strong financial aspirations tend to marry for money (or money-making potential) regardless of their work status; men with strong financial aspirations do not. 相似文献

In this paper, we evaluate consistency in answers to subjective questions about job satisfaction and explore the implications
of any inconsistencies. We do this by analyzing a cross-country data set for 6 EU countries where respondents were posed the
same question about overall job satisfaction twice within the same questionnaire. We find that, on a 0–10 point ordered utility
scale, 80% either classify themselves identically or in the immediate adjacent and that the differences in classification
are symmetric around zero. Furthermore, we find that highly satisfied workers report most consistently. When job satisfaction
is used as an explanatory variable, we show how OLS-parameter estimates provide a lower bound and IV-estimates an upper bound
of the true estimate – and that the bounds are fairly tight. When job satisfaction is used as dependent variable, we generally
find high consistency when parameters are highly significant in both models, while less significant or insignificant parameter
estimates may change considerably. This indicates that higher significance standards may be advisable in analyses with satisfaction
measures as dependent variable compared to more traditional models that are not based on subjective data. 相似文献

The Oral History and Education Project of the International Society for Quality of Life Studies and the Gallup Institute for
Global Well-Being is described along with specific, step-by-step procedures and guidelines for planning, conducting, and disseminating
oral history and educational interviews with pre-eminent research scientists and exemplars of service to others. An illustrative
“case” of interviews with the pre-eminent scholar, Alex Michalos, winner of Canada’s Gold Medal Award and president of Academy
II of the Royal Society of Canada is presented. The Project’s goal is to produce oral histories and educational interviews
with the top researchers in the fields of quality of life, well-being, social indicators, positive psychology and other sciences,
in order to preserve their academic legacies, share their findings worldwide, and encourage a new generation of researchers,
scientists, and oral historians. Those conducting these interviews may claim their interviews as publications in the fields
of the history and teaching of psychology and sociology and oral history as long as these interviews remain available through
a university, academic society, college textbook company, or university archivist. It is hoped that this article will inspire

This study examined the relationships among perceived life satisfaction, perceptions of body weight, and dieting behaviors
among 522 college students. Adjusted multiple logistic regression analyses and multivariate models constructed separately
were utilized for this study. Perceptions of underweight and extreme worry over weight were significantly associated with
dissatisfaction with life for both males and females (p < 0.01). However, vomiting; perceptions of overweight; binge eating behavior; extreme worry over binge eating behavior; and
engaging in binge eating behavior for more than one year were significantly related to dissatisfaction with life for only
females (p < 0.01). In addition, both males and females were less likely to self-identify problematic disordered eating, with males
being particularly less likely to report concern over extreme dieting behaviors. Results suggest that carefully designed educational
and intervention efforts for college students with eating disorders must take gender differences into account. Programs for
males may need to differ from those for females in terms of recruitment, intervention integrity, and evaluation considerations.

The demographic composition of the workforce is changing, with an increase in the participation of minorities. Numerous studies
center their attention on the inclusion of minorities, but variation in turnover of a culturally diverse workforce has not
received much attention. Forecasts indicate that by 2020 Hispanic presence will increase 60% nationwide. Given these trends,
it is critical that management scholars examine the impact of Hispanic cultural factors on important organizational outcomes
such as voluntary turnover. This paper assesses whether there are significant differences between Hispanics and Caucasians
with respect to job embeddedness and voluntary turnover. The findings suggest that job embeddedness is a robust predictor
of employee retention across diverse populations.

In order to examine the potential of constructive thought strategies for enhancing employee job satisfaction, an existing
dispositional model of job satisfaction was expanded and tested. Structural equation modeling techniques indicated significant
relationships among constructive thought strategies, dysfunctional thought processes, subjective well-being, and job satisfaction.
In addition, two competing models were examined to test for the full or partial mediation of the effects of constructive thought
strategies on job satisfaction. The implications of these findings for constructive thought strategy training interventions
are discussed, along with directions for future research efforts. 相似文献
