This study examined the influence of witnessing violence, peer provocation, family support, and parenting practices (monitoring and discipline) on aggression. Participants were 1,196 ninth graders at nine schools in poor, predominantly agricultural, rural communities who completed measures of these variables. Witnessing violence, peer provocation, low levels of family support, and poor parenting practices were each related to higher frequencies of aggression. Witnessing violence and peer provocation partially mediated relations between parenting and aggression, such that students who reported high levels of appropriate parenting reported lower levels of witnessing violence and peer provocation. These were, in turn, related to lower levels of aggression. The relation between family support and aggression was also mediated by peer provocation, though the Degrees of mediation was not as strong as for parenting. Both parenting and family support moderated the relation between witnessing violence and aggression such that this relation was stronger among adolescents who reported low family support or high levels of poor parenting. Neither parenting nor family support moderated the relation between peer provocation and aggression. Overall, parenting practices had a stronger influence on aggression than did family support. Results were generally consistent across gender. These findings have important implications for intervention efforts.  相似文献

Most of the extant research on welfare reform has neglected to consider the experiences of families in rural settings. Fifty women receiving welfare for their dependent children in a rural community were interviewed about their work experiences and aspirations, barriers to employment and service use, as well as mental health and social support. The findings indicate that the majority of participants were connected to the labor force and expressed positive attitudes about work. Barriers to employment (lack of available jobs, child care) and service use (transportation, inconvenient office hours) were endorsed. Perceived social support was negatively related to depression symptoms and positively related to self-efficacy and self-esteem. The importance of understanding the life experiences of welfare recipients in different contexts is discussed.  相似文献

A survey conducted with university academics (N = 187) investigated self‐reported behaviour, explanations, social identification and perceptions of power during a period of industrial disputation. The results point to the importance of subjective experience of group memberships rather than overt group memberships in understanding behaviour and perceptions of power during industrial conflict and demonstrate very little support for the idea that industrial action or inaction reflects coerced behaviour. Bullying and victimization are serious problems for youth of many ages and from a variety of backgrounds. These behaviors have not, however, been widely studied in rural minorities. The current work examined behavioral and social correlates of bullying and victimization in a sample of rural African American youth. Incidence rates of bullying, victimization, and aggressive victimization parallel those in other populations. Bullies were rated as aggressive, hyperactive, and manipulative. Bullies and victims were both sociometrically rejected, but while victims were on the margin of the social network, bullies were integrated in their groups. Bullies' associations were heterogeneous: they belonged to both aggressive and non-aggressive and popular and unpopular groups. They also were highly likely to be leaders of their groups.  相似文献

为研究中国人面子意识是否影响实践社区及其成员的知识传播过程,采用自编实践社区成员面子意识问卷以及知识传播过程与效果问卷对重庆、银川、南京和上海等地企业的430名实践社区成员进行测量。结果表明:问卷具有良好的信度和效度;男性的面子意识显著高于女性;工作年限为11~15年的被试"面子—能力学识"得分显著高于其他组别;"面子—人际交往"对"投入程度"、"区外获取"及"传播效果"的预测作用都为正向,而"面子—能力学识"对这三项的预测作用均为负向;"面子—人际交往"和"面子—能力学识"是面子的两个独立维度。  相似文献

In this paper the author reflects on research undertaken by the Association Myth and Reality in the context of the psychiatric reforms in Italy which resulted in the closure of the asylums and the organisation, over the last 20?years, of a network of services in the community. These include thousands of residential units operating on a rehabilitative model. The focus of this paper is on the concept of the therapeutic community as a dynamic evolutionary path, individually tailored to people with different diagnoses and different ages – e.g. psychosis; borderline; adolescents and children. The therapeutic – and more specifically the environmental – factors are presented here. This includes the aesthetics of living and the sensory/emotional climate in relation to the care of the self and protection, regulation and safety, transitional playful climate, everyday life and the sharing implicit in relationships. The emotional climate is a fundamental component that transverses and intersects all the other factors. Treatment is central to the group with its potential for containment and dynamism in relation to relationships, cohesion, belonging, integration of the self in the community and connections with social networks outside the group aimed at reintegration into society of the resident as a citizen. A system of evaluation through peer reviews between therapeutic communities in Italy is being built in order to continuously improve the quality of service delivery.  相似文献
