Abstract

At a time of low morale the multidisciplinary staff working on a medical oncology rated the severity and frequency of problems arising in their working environment and their personal levels of stress and job satisfaction. An anonymous paper and pencil exercise was used to identify problems at work and possible solutions which staff then discussed as a group. Within four months some changes were implemented resulting in a significant reduction in problems on the unit and a commensurate improvement in morale. Interdisciplinary communication particularly benefited. This problem solving approach was useful in overcoming initial resistance to seeking a cooperative solution to shared problems at work.  相似文献

The Internet has emerged as an important communication platform for the support of collective action, but little is known about how it influences the psychosocial motives for participation. Two quantitative studies were conducted within two different mobilizing contexts, in which offline collective actions were launched through computer‐mediated communication. We examined whether and how the frequency with which people participated in online political discussions moderated the effects of the psychosocial predictors of collective action, specifically politicized identity, anger, collective efficacy, and morality. Results showed that collective action intention was predicted by politicized identity only when participants reported a higher versus lower frequency of online discussion. However, anger did not predict collective action when people had the chance to express this emotion through a higher versus lower frequency of online discussion. Moreover, collective efficacy and morality supported collective action intention in participants who reported a higher versus lower frequency of online discussion. We theorize on how computer‐mediated communication, and its specific features, can be studied as a mobilizing context that influences the psychosocial motives to participate in collective action. In 1974the Occupational Therapy Section at Dwight Eisenhower Army Medical Center established a Life Skills Development Program for the treatment of the hospitalized acutely ill psychiatric patient. The program used a process which moved the patient through specifically prescribed tasks designed to initiate the development of adaptive behavior. Three basic group areas were formulated. These were values clarification, competency training, and information class. Values clarification was designed as an introductory phase of treatment and was important in building initial rapport and implementing patient involvement. Through carefully selected tasks, the patient was relieved of the burden of initiating the group process and was quickly involved in the discussion of life-related topics leading to the establishment of his own priorities. Competency training included a wide range of material allowing the therapist to teach and the patient to practice skills related to work, socialization, use of free time, and self-maintenace. These groups were experiential in nature, encouraging the patient to practice adaptive behaviors in role play settings in the hospital as well as in the surrounding community. Information class was scheduled whenever facts were needed to increase clarity and to facilitate selection of alternative and adaptive behavior. Guest lecturing, "experts" were invited to speak to the group. Also, information based on authoritative sources was prepared and presented by the therapist. The program concept and specifically prepared life skills development material was shared with Army Occupational Therapists. The Life Skills Development Program was presented as an evolving treatment approach in Army Occupational Therapy at the 1975 AOTA Conference in Milwaukee, WI. This treatment approach has continued in Army Occupational Therapy since its introduction. Until recently no collective information was available about programs. A survey of questionnaire was conducted in June 1981 of all Army Occupational Clinics. The results of this survey indicated that not only was the Life Skills Development Program still in use in Army Hospitals, but its application and target population has expanded to become broader than initially proposed. The intent of this paper is to retrace the thought and steps leading to the introduction of the Life Skills Development Program, to describe the structure and rationale of its organization and to report on its current use in Army Occupational Therapy.  相似文献

Worked-examples have been established as an effective instructional format in problem-solving practices. However, less is known about variations in the use of worked examples across individuals at different stages in their learning process in student-centred learning contexts. This study investigates different profiles of students' learning behaviours based on clustering learning dispositions, prior knowledge, and the choice of feedback strategies in a naturalistic setting. The study was conducted on 1,072 students over an 8-week long introductory mathematics course in a blended instructional format. While practising exercises in a digital learning environment, students can opt for tutored problem solving, untutored problem solving, or call worked examples. The results indicated six distinct profiles of learners regarding their feedback preferences in different learning phases. Finally, we investigated antecedents and consequences of these profiles and investigated the adequacy of used feedback strategies concerning ‘help-abuse’. This research indicates that the use of instructional scaffolds as worked-examples or hints and the efficiency of that use differs from student to student, making the attempt to find patterns at an overall level a hazardous endeavour.  相似文献

This paper examines the challenges faced in the Taiwanese secondary school context during the development of the students’ metalearning capacity. During two rounds of action research over the 2011–2012 and 2012–2013 school years, 12 and 15 10th grade students respectively took full part in a metalearning programme as an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) elective course. The students’ reflective journals and interview responses were qualitatively examined through content analysis. The results showed that despite the effects of the programme on the students’ development of metalearning capacity, challenges remained, including (1) the cultural norms in education; (2) scaffolding difficulties; (3) assessment of reflection; and (4) linguistic challenges.  相似文献

As a result of a new understanding of the relation between theory and practice, the “New Frankfurt School,” with Jürgen Habermas as its major representative, highly values the philosophical tradition of American pragmatism, in contrast to the first generation Critical Theorists represented by Max Horkheimer. Although scholars have identified many variables that contribute to creative problem-solving, less attention has been given to variables that might lead to failure in creative problem-solving. One set of variables that might lead to poor performance in creative problem-solving efforts may be found in various decision biases. In this study, the impact of simple and complex decision biases on the production of original, high-quality, and elegant solutions to a creative problem-solving task was examined in a sample of 227 undergraduates attending a large southwestern university. In addition, the value of forecasting instruction as a technique for reducing these decision biases was examined. It was found that both simple and complex decisions biases resulted in problem solutions of lower originality, quality, and elegance. Training in viable forecasting strategies resulted in the production of higher quality problem solutions. The implications of these findings for improving creative problem-solving performance are discussed.  相似文献

Solving complex socio-technical problems, this paper claims, involves diverse knowledges (cognitive diversity), competing interests (social diversity), and pragmatism. To explain this view, this paper first explores two different cases: Canadian pulp and paper mill pollution and siting nuclear reactors in seismically sensitive areas of California. Solving such socio-technically complex problems involves cognitive diversity as well as social diversity and pragmatism. Cognitive diversity requires one to not only recognize relevant knowledges but also to assess their validity. Finally, it is suggested, integrating the resultant set of diverse relevant and valid knowledges determines the parameters of the solution space for the problem.
