in the philosophical literature to distinguish between different kinds of respect. This paper considers the distinction between
‘recognition respect,’ said to be owed to persons as such, and ‘appraisal respect,’ said to be owed to those persons whom
merit it, in the context of the professional–client relationship. Using the practice of counselling as an example, it is argued

Despite its status as a prominent set of theories for explaining the elicitation and differentiation of emotions, much appraisal theory and research offer little indication of the nature of the relationship expected between appraisals and emotions. Here, we present a three‐study, multiple‐method analysis in which we examine numerous ways of testing appraisal–emotion relationships using the “prosocial” intergroup emotions—sympathy, anger, and guilt—as an example. Results show that the set of appraisal dimensions that appears strongly characteristic of an emotion varies depending on the kind of appraisal—emotion relationship hypothesised and the experimental methodology/statistical analysis used. These findings demonstrate the utility of explicit theorising about the nature of the relationship between emotions and appraisals, and show how the hypothesised appraisal–emotion relationship and choice of methodology can affect the structure of appraisal theories. We recommend an analysis across multiple methods to provide a more complete picture of a given set of appraisal–emotion relationships. 相似文献

Speaking roughly, there are two competing accounts of the basis of love. First, the appraisal view: love is based in reasons derived from the valuable properties of the beloved. Second, the bestowal view: love is not based in reasons derived from the valuable properties of the beloved, but love is based in the lover, who then bestows value onto the beloved. While both models deserve due attention, the bestowal model is of present concern. Despite numerous virtues, the bestowal model faces trenchant objections. In this paper, I outline and defend a version of bestowal love, according to which bestowal love is based in the lover’s motivating reasons, and which preserves the virtues while overcoming the difficulties facing bestowal love. 相似文献

What predicts whether young people will establish contacts with immigrants? Students are at a pivotal point in which the campus environment can enable substantial contact with immigrants, and where world views and behavioural patterns are formed which can follow through their adult lives. Through a value‐attitude‐behavior paradigm we examine a conceptual model in which appraisal of an immigrant group as a threat and/or benefit to the host society mediates the relationship between personal values and contact. Findings among 252 students in Israel showed that (1) threat/benefit appraisal of immigrants predicted voluntary contact; (2) personal values of self‐direction and hedonism directly predicted voluntary contact; and (3) Threat/benefit appraisal mediated the relationship between self‐direction and power and contact. Results suggest that increasing awareness of benefits of immigrants can promote positive inter‐group relations. 相似文献

本研究从北京、重庆和石家庄选取三所初中学校1038名初一到初三学生为被试,采用问卷调查的方式以探讨青少年感知的父母冲突对其网络成瘾的影响,以及青少年对父母冲突的认知评价和情绪管理在其中的中介作用。结果表明:(1)总体来看,父母冲突和青少年对父母冲突的认知评价与青少年的网络成瘾呈显著正相关,而青少年的情绪管理与其网络成瘾呈显著负相关;(2)父母冲突不仅直接影响青少年的网络成瘾,而且还通过青少年的冲突评价和情绪管理间接影响青少年的网络成瘾,但直接作用更为明显。(3)相比青少年的冲突评价,青少年的情绪管理起着更为重要的中介作用。 相似文献

Social psychologists have evidence that evaluative feedback on others’ choices sometimes has unwelcome negative effects on
hearers’ motivation. Holroyd’s article (Holroyd J. Ethical Theory Moral Pract 10:267–278, 2007) draws attention to one such
result, the undermining effect, that should help to challenge moral philosophers’ complacency about blame and praise. The
cause for concern is actually greater than she indicates, both because there are multiple kinds of negative effect on hearer
motivation, and because these are not, as she hopes, reliably counteracted by implicit features of praise and blame. The communicative
ideal that she articulates does point us in the right direction, but it requires further elaboration. Once it is spelled out,
we find that realizing this ideal, in light of the empirical research, requires rethinking the role of verdict-like judgments
within moral feedback.
