The importance of appropriate test selection for a given research endeavor cannot be over-emphasized. Using samples drawn from eleven populations (differing in shape, peakedness, and density in the tails), this study investigates the small sample empirical powers of ninek-sample tests against ordered location alternatives under completely randomized designs. The results then are intended to aid the researcher in the selection of a particular procedure appropriate for a given endeavor. To highlight this an industrial psychology application involving work productivity is presented.Research was supported in part by the Scholastic Assistance Program, Baruch College. The phenomenon of undermatching on concurrent variable-interval schedules is shown to be derivable by transforming the individual interreinforcement intervals of each variable-interval schedule and averaging the transformed values to produce an "estimate" of the rate of reinforcement the schedules deliver. If the transformation is based on a power function with a fractional exponent, such as is found in many studies of temporal control in animals, matching response rations to the ratios of these estimated rates of reinforcement yields undermatching. If the concurrent variable-interval schedules are arranged such that the individual intervals in each schedule have a constant proportionality (a procedure found in many commonly used variable-interval schedules) the slope of the line relating logarithms of response ratios and of programmed reinforcement ratios is identical to the exponent of the power transformation applied to the individual time intervals in the variable-interval schedules. In other cases this simple relation does not hold but the degree of undermatching is greater the lower the value of the exponent of the power function. Abstract. Fred. L. Polak explored the mechanisms of social change in terms of “future—visions” held by a community. The future, says Polak, participates actively in the present, providing part of the context within which today's decisions are made. Barbara McClintock acquired her insights in maize genetics by developing “a feeling for the organism.” New insights, she maintains, emerge through a mutual relationship between researcher and subject. Though scholars in different fields, both acknowledge the power of images in the creative process. The purpose of these experiments was to illustrate how a search for positional relationships between the elements in a stimulus pattern is effortful and serial, whereas a search for pattern elements (without requiring any positional information) takes place rapidly and in parallel. In all three experiments of this study, the target and distractor patterns consisted of two vertical line segments. In the experiment concerning the search for positional relationships between pattern elements, one of the line segments in a line pair had a gap, and the observer's task was to indicate whether the positional order of the two lines was identical in all the line pairs of the display, or whether the line segments were in a mirror-image order in one line pair (the target). In the two experiments concerning the search for pattern elements (no positional information was required), the observer's task was to look for a line pair with one gap line (the target) among line pairs containing two broken lines or among line pairs with unbroken lines. In all three tasks, the reaction time for a correct target detection was measured. The results showed that the search in the first task was highly serial, and in the second and third tasks of "feature" searches, the search time was nearly independent of the number of distractor pairs. It is suggested that this dissociation may be interpreted in the context of the quality of information processing in extrafoveal vision, i. e. the elements of a stimulus pattern can be clearly visible outside the fovea, but it is not possible to perceive accurately the positional relationships between them. 相似文献

任务分离的实验范式以功能分离和随机独立性等证据说明不同记忆任务的底层系统或加工机制。近期研究发现,两种记忆测量重测信度、复本信度和分半信度差异显著,内隐测验的信度更低一些,因而对变量效果缺乏足够的敏感性。两种测验信度差异对任务分离提出了区别于系统说或加工观点的另外解释。以后在研究外显和内隐记忆分离的时候应该慎重考虑测验信度的检验问题,还应通过各种方法来提高内隐记忆测验的信度,使两种记忆测验的信度具有可比性。 相似文献

This paper examines the ethical and professional dilemmas faced by counselling supervisors working in a range of diverse organisational contexts. Questionnaires and interviews were used to explore supervisor experiences of working in counselling agencies, industry, education and health service settings. Ethical and professional dilemmas outlined by supervisors were examined in connection with their role within the organisation. It was found that both external and ‘in‐house’ supervisors were exposed to dilemmas focused around issues of responsibility, confidentiality, boundaries, professionalism, relationships, contracts and ethical practice. Supervisors were divided in their opinions about playing a more active, educative role within organisational systems. There was considerable support for the construction of more explicit relationships between supervisors and their employing organisation. 相似文献
