A developmental model of gender-stereotype acquisition (Martin, 1989) proposes that by the age of 8 years children draw upon information about gender-stereotyped interests as well as other children's sex when deciding how much other children would like different activities; younger children rely on sex only when making such decisions. We examined whether the judgments that children made about other children's preferences were different from those that they made about their own preferences for masculine and feminine musical instruments. Three hundred twelve children aged 8–9 years ranked 6 instruments in order of preference, and rated on a 4-point scale how much they would like to play each one. Children were then asked to decide how much other children would like to play each instrument. Only girls' own preferences for feminine instruments differed according to the gender-stereotyping of their most-preferred instrument. Judgments about how much other children would like masculine and feminine instruments did not differ according to those children's gender-stereotyped interest. Children made stereotypical predictions about the preferences of children of unknown sex who played either a masculine or feminine instrument. Implications for a theoretical account of the development of children's gender-stereotypes are discussed. 相似文献

Many people value music as an important part of their everyday lives. The published literature reveals that the role of music in life is varied: it can be recreational, educational, social, emotional, therapeutic, and spiritual. The importance and relevance of music depends on the life needs and interests of the individual and the social group within which he/she lives. It is now widely recognized that music for many older people is crucial in supporting a sense of well-being. The article reviews the evidence on the role of music in promoting health and well-being, and how it can produce positive psychological and physiological benefits for individuals. In this article, we describe translated Japanese comics or “manga” with sexual content. Because in the West comics have been
treated as junk culture, they lack canons for critical analysis. We have developed methods for analyzing manga that focus
on objective assessment of content, on reader subjectivity, and on how the emotional tenor of the artwork is created. We briefly
review some history of Japanese art and culture, in which sexuality has always been a legitimate subject for art and which
forms the cultural underpinnings of manga. We summarize the erotic themes and visions of manga with sexual content, including
heterosexual courtship and consummation, female and male homosexuality, sadomasochism, transvestitism, incest, and bestiality.
Critics of manga argue that it glorifies rape, a view we could not confirm. We identified 87 stories with rape or sexual assault;
80 (92.0%) show the woman or others taking violent, often murderous, revenge on sexual attackers. We also analyze visual modalities
for depicting men and women. In common with older Japanese aesthetic traditions, the manga we have seen depict women as beautiful,
powerful, and erotic. Finally, we suggest that manga functions as an art form by mobilizing the reader’s involvement with
the characters, especially female characters, in a complex narrative framework in which sexuality is a positive virtue for
men and, especially, for women. We conclude that manage contains some of the finest erotic art being produced in the world
today for sheer power, elegance, and drama.

Abstract: In this article, I assume that musical works are abstract types, and I raise and address a new question concerning musical ontology that may take the types view at least a step further: When do musical works cease to exist? I then propound my view about musical works as types, which is somewhat like the Aristotelian Realist position concerning universals. Next, I address some objections to that view. In Consecrating Science: Wonder, Knowledge, and the Natural World, Lisa H. Sideris makes a compelling case that a new cosmology movement advocates for a new, universal, creation story grounded in the sciences. She fears the new story reinforces elite power structures and anthropocentrism and thus environmental degradation. Alternatively, she promotes genuine wonder which occurs in experiences of the natural world. As Sideris focuses on the likely logical outcome of the assumptions and arguments of the new cosmologies, she does not investigate whether and how people react to these new myths. I suggest that methods of documentary studies, applied to popular book reviews on Amazon and Goodreads, shed light on the ramifications of the new cosmologies among the general public. While many reviewers exhibit attitudes and behaviors that would concern Sideris, responses are far from univocal. Using this case as a guide, I suggest that attention to the experience of laypeople could contribute productively to religion and science research in general. 相似文献

Based on research identifying relations between math and music, we aimed to identify the group of cognitive and affective factors related to math and music theory that best explained undergraduate music theory achievement. Using dominance analysis, we predicted the music theory course grades of 230 undergraduate music majors. Potential predictors were narrowed from measures of knowledge, aptitude, experience, confidence, and anxiety in both music theory and math as well as spatial skills and reading test scores. Results suggested that ACT math scores and music theory confidence were important predictors for Music Theories I and II grades. Music Theory I was also predicted by aptitude‐based music theory skills, and Music Theory II was also predicted by math course experience. These findings provide evidence for a relation between math and music theory and support the use of several readily available measures for college‐level music instructors to identify students who may struggle in music theory. 相似文献

A questionnaire was sent to a random sample of 500 community living older adults in Sweden (aged 65–75 years). The questionnaire
assessed uses of music in everyday life: frequency of listening, situations where music is encountered, emotional responses
to music, and motives for listening (i.e., listening strategies). Also, different facets of psychological well-being (e.g.,
affective well-being, life satisfaction, and eudaimonic well-being) and selected background variables (e.g., education level,
health status, activity level, and Big-5 personality characteristics) were assessed. Results showed that listening to music
is a common leisure activity encountered in many everyday situations, and that listening to music is a frequent source of
positive emotions for older adults. Also, the participants reported using a variety of listening strategies related to emotional
functions (e.g., pleasure, mood regulation, and relaxation) and issues of identity, belonging, and agency. The associations
between listening strategies and well-being were explored through correlation and multiple regression analyses where the influence
of background variables was controlled for. Health status and personality were the most important predictors of well-being,
but some listening strategies were also significantly associated with psychological well-being. The results give important
insights into older adults’ uses of music in everyday life and give clues regarding possible relationships between musical
