This study explored levels of occupational stress and mental well-being of a cohort of Black South African teachers. 200 secondary school teachers completed the Teacher Stress Inventory (TSI: Boyle, Borg, Falzon, & Baglion, 1995), General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28: Goldberg & Hillier, 1979 Goldberg, D. Correlations and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) were used to determine the levels of occupational stress and well-being of participants, and to establish the relation between these variables. A significant majority of the teachers reported high levels of mental health (flourishing) despite high levels of teacher stress. These results show teachers’ ability to withstand and cope with stress whilst maintaining their mental health. This suggests the presence of protective factors that mediate the effect of work-related stressors and, in so doing, contribute to the teachers’ levels of resilience.  相似文献

Abstract

Centralized Off-Unit Programing With Extended hours (COPE) is a recovery-oriented model of service that aims to address limited occupational engagement and social isolation among inpatient clients with serious mental illness. This study explored the self-reported outcomes of 12 clients using semi-structured interviews and pre- and post- administration of the Personal Recovery Outcome Measure. These outcomes were supported by significant improvements in personal recovery and included sense of choice, occupational engagement, socialization, change in environment, skill learning, and improved sense of wellness. These findings provide preliminary evidence on the COPE model of service and its potential role in promoting personal recovery.  相似文献

Primary objective: The study's primary objective was to investigate the experiences of gay and lesbian therapists, when considering self‐disclosure of their sexual orientation to straight (i.e. heterosexual) clients. This qualitative study set out to ascertain the key factors gay therapists take into account when considering this decision and to explore the effects this self‐disclosure may have on themselves, their clients and their therapeutic relationships. Research design: The research design was based on the use of semi‐structured interviews, undertaken with a non‐random, purposive sample of counsellors and psychotherapists (n=8) in current practice. The rationale for this method was to aid exploration of therapists' experiences of the process of self‐disclosure. Methods and procedures: Inclusion criteria were for therapists who self‐identified as being gay or lesbian, and who were experienced in clinical work with straight clients. Transcribed data was analysed using inductive thematic analysis. Main outcomes and results: Some therapists reported being confident with self‐disclosure relating to their own sexual orientation. However, a common theme related to the reportedly high levels of anxiety and vulnerability, which therapists identified. Key themes emerged around: respondents' fears of client judgement; a need for therapist self‐protection; self‐awareness of the potential impact of their own fears and prejudices on the therapeutic relationship; and the potential relevance of internalised homophobia, as an overall constraining factor. Conclusions: Self‐disclosure of their sexual orientation to straight clients is constructed, in this initial survey, as being potentially problematic and risky for some gay therapists.  相似文献

在文献研究基础上,通过访谈等方法,编制职业承诺问卷(OCQ)。通过对240名被试进行预测,修订得到正式问卷。重新选取11家企业的员工进行测试,获得330份有效问卷,数据的验证性因素分析结果表明:企业员工的职业承诺是四因素结构,包括情感承诺、规范承诺、代价承诺和选择限制承诺。  相似文献

Theoretical models of occupational stress are important because they suggest a focus for intervention, and inform practice. The gap between research and practice was exposed most recently by Burke (1993) claiming little awareness of research findings by practitioners (managers, consultants, clinicians), little intervention activity being undertaken at the organizational level, little research being undertaken to determine the effectiveness of individual level interventions, and only modest use of work research findings for intervention and policy development (p. 85). This paper discusses the issue of intervention, and examines values, assumptions and the politics of applied research. A critical review of the evaluation studies of individual vs. organizational level interventions is undertaken and finally the problem of occupational stress as a national and international issue is considered.  相似文献

This study found that gender differences exist within senior U.K. civil servants. Females within the civil service were significantly more job dissatisfied, and suffered from poorer mental and physical ill health. They also showed more concern about their role at work, the factors associated with their particular job, the job's relationship to the home environment, and the constraints of the job. Males were more affected by how much control they felt they had at work, and by their hard-driving and achievement oriented behavior.  相似文献

The experiences of five injured workers from one workplace which had been identified as having a very poor workers' compensation claims experience were analyzed using a systemic theory framework. It was predicted that the fundamental stress-producing conflict between safety and profit that exists in industry between workers and their employers is exacerbated when a worker is injured; furthermore, the degree of stress experienced by both the injured worker and the employer is related to the impact of the injury on the organization and on the productivity of the workplace. The increased stress in both the injured worker and the employer results in increased rigidity in responding to the change or threat in the organization caused by workplace injury. A systemic approach to rehabilitation was recommended in which the employer as well as the injured worker were viewed as clients who required varying levels of support and intervention in managing workplace injury.  相似文献

The accumulation of research findings now suggest a significant work stress problem, with implications for worker health, motivation and productivity, that warrants a concerted applied research effort at a local level and a strategy and policy response at a national level. Psychologists need to rethink prevailing paradigms that often separate their research and practice. We argue that a conducive production model that emphasizes action and knowledge, and reciprocal learning between academia, practitioners, and organizations may be the way forward for psychologists to respond effectively to the current work stress problems and other emergent organizational issues. Failure to do so may result in exacerbation of problems related to the psychological and social context of work, a slowed response to increased demands, and an ever decreasing practical utility of the profession.  相似文献
