This paper addresses B. F. Skinner's utopian vision for enhancing social justice and human well-being in his 1948 novel, Walden Two. In the first part, we situate the book in its historical, intellectual, and social context of the utopian genre, address critiques of the book's premises and practices, and discuss the fate of intentional communities patterned on the book. The central point here is that Skinner's utopian vision was not any of Walden Two's practices, except one: the use of empirical methods to search for and discover practices that worked. In the second part, we describe practices in Skinner's book that advance social justice and human well-being under the themes of health, wealth, and wisdom, and then show how the subsequent literature in applied behavior analysis supports Skinner's prescience. Abstract: People with cognitive disabilities are equal citizens, and law ought to show respect for them as full equals. To do so, law must provide such people with equal entitlements to medical care, housing, and other economic needs. But law must also go further, providing people with disabilities truly equal access to education, even when that is costly and involves considerable change in current methods of instruction. Community psychologists have long worked with community-based human service organizations to build participatory processes. These efforts largely aim at building participatory practices within the current individual-wellness paradigm of human services. To address collective wellness, human service organizations need to challenge their current paradigm, attend to the social justice needs of community, and engage community participation in a new way, and in doing so become more openly political. We use qualitative interviews, focus groups, organizational documents, and participant observation to present a comparative case study of two organizations involved in such a process through an action research project aimed at transforming the organizations’ managerial and practice paradigm from one based on first-order, ameliorative change to one that promotes second-order, transformative change via strength-based approaches, primary prevention, empowerment and participation, and focuses on changing community conditions. Four participatory tensions or dialectics are discussed: passive versus active participation, partners versus clients, surplus powerlessness versus collective efficacy, and reflection/learning versus action/doing. 相似文献

Cameroonian university students (N = 666) assessed whether certain different societal positions that the law grants to women and men (the husband chooses the marital home, the husband wields parental power, a married woman cannot freely engage in trade, the husband administers his wife's personal property) and certain cultural practices (female genital mutilation, parents arranging their children's marriage) were seen as violations of women's human rights. Justifications for the choices were also analysed. Female genital mutilation was most often seen as a violation of women's human rights, and the husband selecting the marital home was least often seen as a violation. These differences were explained by cultural specificities. Women more often than men saw the cases as violations of rights. Respondents coming from the North saw the cases less often as violations of rights than respondents from other geocultural areas, which was in accordance with their previously observed higher collectivism. concentrating specifically on their common pursuit of origins. It identifies in passing theoretical support from evolutionary
biology for present-day concerns in philosophy, singling out Sartre’s conception of fraternity as an example. It anchors its
analysis of the common pursuit of origins in Husserl’s consistent recognition of the grounding significance of Nature and
in his consistent recognition of animate forms of life other than human. It enumerates and exemplifies five basic errors of
continental philosophers with respect to Nature, errors testifying to a philosophical fundamentalism that distorts the intricate
interconnections and relationships of Nature in favor of a preferred knowledge rooted in ontological reductionism. It shows
that to discover and appreciate the common ground, one must indeed study “the things themselves.”

This article argues that the problem of modernity concerns the circumstances of existence and human destiny in modern times.
To understand the nature of this problem and find the corresponding solution, we need to reinterpret the thought of Karl Marx
regarding the contradictions of human existence and its historical dimensions. Following Marx’s line of thinking, this article
reviews his critical sequence, creative transformation, and development of duality of thought on man and the world in Western
history, focusing on the following four issues: (1) how Marx, on the basis of man’s sensuous objective activities, observes
the duality of man and the world as well as the relationship between man’s internal and external activities; (2) how Marx
discloses the true connotation and real significance of man’s historical existence, history, and historicity; (3) how Marx
reveals the inherent contradictions of modern capitalist society and the destiny of modern man based on historic thought concerning
man’s existence; and (4) by praising Marx’s views on material production and the eternal significance of ancient Greek culture,
the article reveals another dimension of Marx’s thought, a dimension that tends to be ignored. This article holds that in
this era of globalization, it is extremely important and urgent to have an in-depth understanding of Marx’s historical thoughts
regarding human existence and of the feasibility of his theory. Moreover, it is imperative to further develop this understanding
to create a clearer picture of our own path of development and our outlook on humanity.
